L’impronta di Dainelli a Napoli: il patrimonio scientifico conservato presso l’Università “Federico II”

    No full text

Irreversible Ocular Lesions in a Dog With Angiostrongylus Vasorum Infection

    No full text
This report describes a 10-month-old dog with a sudden loss of vision and severe dyspnoea. The ocular examination revealed bilateral panuveitis, lens subluxation, secondary glaucoma, and retinal detachment. In addition, the ocular ultrasound showed in the vitreous body of the right eye, a small doubled-lined foreign body compatible with an intraocular parasite. Radiographs of the thorax revealed an increased opacity with mixed lung pattern (alveolar and bronchial) and thoracic ultrasonography showed several subpleural nod- ules. The presence of Angiostrongylus vasorum first stage larvae was confirmed with 324 larvae per gram of feces and an antigen test for the parasite (AngioDetect, IDEXX) also yielded a positive result. The severe and irreversible ocular lesions described in this case enhanced the complexity of the clinical picture of canine angiostrongylosis. Infection with the parasite should be included in the list of differential diagnoses for ocular uveitis to avoid potentially serious complications related to a missed or delayed diagnosis

Understanding innovation processes in professional service firms. An integrated conceptual model

    No full text
The current paper offers a new conceptual model to understanding innovation processes in professional service firms, to make hidden relationships more explicit and to find out what are the issues still unexplored. The paper employs a systematic literature review, and draws upon original categorizations of extant literature, to identify main processes for each category of PSFs. It unveils that connections among a wide range of factors highlighting neglected questions relevant from both the theoretical and the practical perspectives

Olive seed wasps (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea), potentially important pests of olive crops in the Western Cape of South Africa

    No full text
Abstract: Most phytophagous insects on cultivated olives, Olea europaea L. subsp. europaea var. europaea, in South Africa are native and come from the local wild olive tree, Olea europaea subsp. cuspidata. This paper presents the first qualitative and comparative data regarding the phytophagous seed wasps on cultivated and wild olives. From 2009 to 2012, 62 random fruit samples were collected from untreated cultivated olive trees and 53 random fruit samples from wild olives at 13 different localities in the Western Cape. During spring 2013 and summer 2014, olives collected from the trees were dissected with a scalpel (when the pit was still soft) in search of seed wasp eggs and young larvae or cut with a pipe cutter (when the pit was hard) in search of mature larvae and pupae. Collected young and mature larvae were sequenced for the barcoding COI region (650 bp), and compared with adult seed wasp reference sequences. Seed wasp infestation was clearly higher in cultivated olives than Bactrocera oleae infestation (14% vs. 8%), reaching a peak of 66% in cultivar Koroneiki. Our results, including field data obtained from cultivated olives for the first time, demonstrate that Eupelmus spermophilus is phytophagous and in the Western Cape is virtually the only seed wasp in cultivated olives (99% in cultivated olives, 81% in wild ones). A precise assessment of the economic impact of seed wasps is being done by calculating the induced fruit drop, studying the susceptibility of olive cultivars and the influence of wild olives near olive crops

Molecular and phenotypic diversity of traditional European plum (Prunus domestica L.) germplasm of Southern Italy

    No full text
The European plum (Prunus domestica L.) is a worldwide distributed tree species. Italy has an ample number of traditional varieties, but many are neglected and at risk of extinction. This germplasm is still cultivated in rural areas in spite of the EU-28 crisis of the stone fruit sector. Traditional European plum varieties remain poorly characterized, strongly limiting their promotion in local markets, use for farm diversification, and exploitation for local gastronomic products. In this study, we carried out an investigation of the morphological and genetic diversity present in an ex-situ collection of 29 traditional varieties of P. domestica of the Campania region (Southern Italy). The combination of five continuous and five categorical fruit traits allowed us to phenotypically distinguish all the varieties. Similarly, the Simple Sequence Repeats (SSRs) employed (five genomic and five deriving from Expressed Sequence Tags) identified a unique molecular profile for each variety. Moreover, the data indicated that the phenotypic and molecular investigations provided different clustering, suggesting that the two analyses sampled different sources of diversity. The number and the distribution of the scored phenotypes as well as the indices of genetic diversity imply the presence of a wide-ranging variation, which may sustain the development of high-value, niche market products. Our work provided evidence that the implementation of measures for a combination of ex-situ and on-farm conservation of traditional European plum varieties should be preferred to avoid the loss of an ample diversity

Di alcuni passaggi critici intorno alla filosofia di Jaspers e alla questione metafisica della Weltanschauung nelle riflessioni e annotazioni postume dei cosiddetti «Quaderni Neri» di Heidegger.

    No full text

Wing-tip vortex control with synthetic jet technology

    No full text
An experimental investigation on the effectiveness of synthetic jet actuation in affecting and accelerating wingtip vortices dissipation of an unswept, low aspect ratio, rectangular wing at a Reynolds number Rec = 8.04 × 10^4 has been carried out and reported herein. Active control parameters, Cμ and F + have been chosen in order to stimulate vortex instability at its own frequency. The actuation is implemented through synhtetic jets generated passing a sinusoidal signal whose frequency has been set to Crow instability frequency to the loudspeaker. Measurements at z/b = 5, i.e. z/c = 10 considering that A = 2 for the wing model, where the wake has assumed an oscillatory behaviour, have been carried out to verify the control effectiveness. StereoPIV measurements showed that synthetic jets actuation affects vortex evolution, causing a decrease of the axial velocity deficit and of the tangential velocities and of the region characterised by high values of streamwise vorticity
