CENTRIFUGE MODELLING IN LIQUEFIABLE GROUND BEFORE AND AFTER THE APPLICATION OF REMEDIATION TECHNIQUES

    No full text
his paper describes the small scale centrifuge modelling activities performed at ISMGEO (Istituto Sperimentale Modelli Geotecnici, formerly ISMES – Italy) laboratory in the frame of the H2020 LIQUEFACT project (http://www.liquefact.eu/). The main aim of the exper- imentation was to analyze the seismic behavior of loose, saturated, sandy deposits, homogeneous or stratified, subjected to increasing seismic excitations up to liquefaction and to verify the effec- tiveness of different liquefaction mitigation techniques. Some tests were carried out under free field condition, in some others a simple structure based on shallow foundations was modelled. Thirty-seven centrifuge tests were carried out to this aim, organized in three series: the first one aimed at investigating the liquefaction triggering conditions, the second and third ones devoted at analyzing the effectiveness of three selected liquefaction mitigation techniques: vertical drains, horizontal drains and “Induced Partial Saturation” (IPS). Some of the most significant results are presented in this paper

Mafia Violence : Strategies, Representations, Performances

    No full text
This chapter offers an introduction to the main features and dynamics of mafia violence in Italy, concentrating on the major criminal organizations historically rooted in the southern part of the country, such as Cosa Nostra in Sicily, the ’Ndrangheta in Calabria and the Camorra in Campania. The author’s attention is primarily dedicated to the qualitative aspects of mafia violence, trying to go beyond a strictly quantitative analysis which would risk providing only partial information as to the phenomenon. In particular, the focus is on the distinctive traits of and the meanings taken on by mafia violence in the recent history of these organizations, from a perspective that considers it not only as an important strategic resource but also, and above all, a social resource. A resource, that is, able to generate and/or nourish factors bearing on the identities, both personal and collective, found within these groups, which have important repercussions on the broader social and economic context in which they operate

Situated psychological agents: A methodology for educational games

    No full text
In recent years, the ever-increasing need for valid and effective training to acquire competences in multiform contexts has led to a wide diffusion of educational games (EG). In spite of their diffusion, there is still a need to reflect on the design process that should embed the games' pedagogical potential and the instructional process in the entertainment scope. Moreover, as building EG, especially in digital environments, is an enterprise that involves specialistswith different expertise, it can be useful to have a shared methodology that is easily understandable and usable by many users. In this paper, we propose to use situated psychological agents (SPA) as a methodology to design and build effective EG and show how to represent games in terms of SPA and their interactions by diagrams and describe different examples of how this approach has been applied

    No full text

    No full text
The representation of Christian origins in the Italian Encyclopedia (Treccani) is the result of a particular way of looking at the religions of the past. It stands out as an alliance between European historicist reflection and strictly theological-dogmatic and apologetic assessments. The political fact of the Concordat of 1929 strengthens this alliance. The Italian Encyclopedia becomes one of the tools by which it is possible to emphasize and amplify the Fascist discursive machine, that at that moment emerges as strictly connected with the traditionalist Catholicism. This traditionalist Catholicism is 'incorporated' and ‘institutionalized’ within the media-communicative framework built by the Fascist regime, as it emerges also, among other elements, from the same Italian Encyclopedia
