    Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy, with well-differentiated subtypes characterized by an excellent prognosis due to their optimal sensitivity to standard therapies whereas poorly differentiated and anaplastic tumours by chemo/radio-resistance and unfavourable outcome. Heat Shock Proteins (HSPs) are molecular chaperones overexpressed in thyroid malignancies and involved in crucial functions responsible for thyroid carcinogenesis, as protection from apoptosis, drug resistance and cell migration. Thus, HSPs inhibitors have been proposed as novel therapeutic agents in thyroid cancer to revert molecular mechanisms of tumour progression. In this review, we report an overview on the biological role of HSPs, and specifically HSP90s, in thyroid cancer and their potential involvement as biomarkers. We discuss the rationale to evaluate HSPs inhibitors as innovative anticancer agents in specific subtypes of thyroid cancer characterized by poor response to therapies with the objective to target single family chaperones to reduce, simultaneously, the expression/stability of multiple client proteins

    This paper aims to demonstrate how ‘research by design,’ which is an approach bridging research, design, and planning, can help unpack the complexity of today’s metropolitan challenges by considering the resource flows and processes that were omitted by traditional ways of planning. This is crucial for circular developments. By reporting the experience of two university design studios across Europe, this paper can contribute to a better understanding and imagination of desirable future scenarios of resilient regions. The experiments carried out in the Regional design studio: ‘Spatial Strategies for the Global Metropolis’ held at TU Delft are described alongside with the exercises carried out in the design studio ‘Laboratory of Urbanism’ of the MAPA Course, held at DiARC UNINA. Both courses focused on the regeneration of wastescapes as a fundamental part of holistic adaptation strategies for more resilient and circular regions. Climate change issues related to resilience thinking have been interwoven with other complex challenges such as the co-existence of wastescapes and land scarcity as well as spatial injustice. Through a ‘research by design’ approach, these different aspects are brought together to achieve a holistic approach for urban resilience

    Long-time behaviour of the approximate solution to quasi-convolution Volterra equations

    The integral representation of some biological phenomena consists in Volterra equations whose kernels involve a convolution term plus a non convolution one. Some significative applications arise in linearised models of cell migration and collective motion, as described in Di Costanzo et al. (Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. Ser. B 25 (2020) 443–472), Etchegaray et al. (Integral Methods in Science and Engineering (2015)), Grec et al. (J. Theor. Biol. 452 (2018) 35–46) where the asymptotic behaviour of the analytical solution has been extensively investigated. Here we consider this type of problems from a numerical point of view and we study the asymptotic dynamics of numerical approximations by linear multistep methods. Through a suitable reformulation of the equation, we collect all the non convolution parts of the kernel into a generalized forcing function, and we transform the problem into a convolution one. This allows us to exploit the theory developed in Lubich (IMA J. Numer. Anal. 3 (1983) 439–465) and based on discrete variants of Paley–Wiener theorem. The main effort consists in the numerical treatment of the generalized forcing term, which will be analysed under suitable assumptions. Furthermore, in cases of interest, we connect the results to the behaviour of the analytical solution

    In this study, the performance of 63 existing pedotransfer functions (PTFs) is evaluated to estimate oven-dry soil bulk density (BD) by using a dataset of 3,316 soil cores taken mainly in the farmlands of Campania (southern Italy). As expected, the lack of direct calibration yields prediction accuracy from unsatisfactory to rather weak. Therefore, we advance the working hypothesis that the use of hierarchical soil mapping information can make the application of existing PTFs more reliable. We show that grouping data according to land-systems classes or soil groups considerably improves the prediction ability quantified through the root mean squared error (RMSE) and the coefficient of determination (R2). An independent data set of 105 soil cores taken from two hillslopes in the Upper Alento River Catchment in southern Campania was used to verify our assumption. The validation step shows that the knowledge of a soil-landscape map is an efficient tool for improving the prediction of BD. This approach will be employed in a subsequent study to develop site-specific PTFs for the study region
