Extension of the system boundary of the Digital Twin onto the sensors of the Physical Twin through the introduction of redundant soft sensors
The benefit of Digital Twins depends to a large extent on the quality of the sensor data provided. In many cases, sensor failures are only detected late in operation which can lead to serious consequences. For this reason, one approach to reduce the resulting safety issues is to use redundant sensor systems that monitor the same measureand. However, due to the additional sensors required, this is associated with additional financial and design effort.
In this publication an alternative strategy is presented, which provides a redundant sensor system with the help of soft sensors. Soft sensors use already installed physical sensors to anticipate a new measured variable via algorithms. They are often used to avoid placing sensors in inaccessible locations, but are used here to perform redundant computation of already existing metrics. The sensor data of physical and soft sensors are used as input variables for a Digital Twin. Here, these are compared with each other and can be critically questioned by the twin itself. This makes it possible to extend the system boundary of the Digital Twin to the sensors themselves and provided input variables can be checked for their validity. This allows sensor failures to be detected at an early stage and consequential damage to be averted
Using passive BCI for personalization of assistive wearable devices: a proof-of-concept study
Assistive wearable devices can significantly enhance the quality of life for individuals with movement impairments, aid the rehabilitation process, and augment movement abilities of healthy users. However, personalizing the assistance to individual preferences and needs remains a challenge. Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) offers a promising solution for this personalization problem. The overarching goal of this study is to investigate the feasibility of utilizing passive BCI technology to personalize the assistance provided by a knee exoskeleton. Participants performed seated knee flexion-extension tasks while wearing a one-degree-of-freedom knee exoskeleton with varying levels of applied force. Their brain activities were recorded throughout the movements using electroencephalography (EEG). EEG spectral bands from several brain regions were compared between the conditions with the lowest and highest exoskeleton forces to identify statistically significant changes. A Naive Bayes classifier was trained on these spectral features to distinguish between the two conditions. Statistical analysis revealed significant increases in δ and θ activity and decreases in α and β activity in the frontal, motor, and occipital cortices. These changes suggest heightened attention, concentration, and motor engagement when the task became more difficult. The trained Naive Bayes classifier achieved an average accuracy of approximately 72% in distinguishing between the two conditions. The outcomes of our study demonstrate the potential of passive BCI in personalizing assistance provided by wearable devices. Future research should further explore integrating passive BCI into assistive wearable devices to enhance user experience
Reducing cheap talk? How monetary incentives affect the accuracy of metamemory judgments
The accuracy of metacognitive judgments is rarely incentivized in experiments; hence, it depends on the participants' willingness to invest cognitive resources and respond truthfully. According to arguments promoted in economic research that performance cannot reach its full potential without proper motivation, metacognitive abilities might therefore have been underestimated. In two experiments ( N = 128 and N = 129), we explored the impact of incentives on the accuracy of judgments of learning (JOLs), memory performance, and cue use in free recall of word lists. We introduced a payoff scheme with 5 cents maximum per judgment to promote the accuracy of predicting recall success while simultaneously discouraging strategic responding in the memory test. Incentivizing JOLs had no effect on memory performance. Metacognitive accuracy in terms of resolution (Kruskal's Gamma) was slightly improved in Experiment 1, but not in Experiment 2. On the more negative side, the incentives boosted JOLs indiscriminately, producing substantial overconfidence. A deeper analysis including cues like word concreteness, imagery, arousal, frequency, subjective relevance, and font size showed the usual and simultaneous cue effects on JOLs. However, cue effects were largely unaffected in size by incentivizing JOLs. In summary, incentives for accuracy do not improve the resolution of JOLs to an extent that outweighs the large inflation of overconfidence. Based on the current results, one cannot recommend the future use of incentivized studies in the field of metamemory

Modernization and Optimization of MPI Codes
MPI has become the de facto standard for distributed memory computing since its inception in 1994.
While the MPI standard has evolved to include new technologies like RDMA,
many applications still rely on the original set of MPI operations. This thesis initially
investigates the current usage of MPI. We note that developers underutilize modern MPI
features, as their implementations often are not optimized. On the other hand, as many
users rely on the ”old” MPI features, the MPI implementation developers have no incentive
to optimize implementations for the new features. As a consequence, there is no incentive
for the MPI users to learn the new features, creating a vicious cycle.
To break this cycle, this thesis explores three main approaches: (1) facilitating correctness
checking tool support, (2) modernizing MPI codes with compiler based approaches, and
(3) exploiting compiler knowledge to further optimize the implementation of modern MPI
features.
In order to facilitate the development and improvement of tools aiding with MPI develop-
ment, this thesis introduces the correctness benchmark MPI-BugBench, as a standardized
benchmark to evaluate the real world applicability of such tools. Further we show that
compiler-based automatic modernization methods can encourage early adoption of new
MPI features with minimal programmer effort, for example partitioned operations. Lastly,
compiler knowledge can be utilized in order to further optimize the performance of MPI
implementations, for example in persistent operations. The use of compiler knowledge, in
particular, enables modernization of existing MPI codes without the need of application
developers to rewrite existing MPI codes
