Corporate social responsibility in times of crisis: business actions during the COVID-19 pandemic
Between the years 2019 and 2020, humanity was affected by one of the most serious pandemics in recent history, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The socioeconomic tragedy required the complete mobilization of governments, companies, and other organizations to contain and combat the disease. Shedding light on the role of companies, this article set out to analyze, through descriptive, qualitative and documentary research, the various manifestations of Corporate Social Responsibility in Brazilian companies during the pandemic, with the Agenda 2030 as a backdrop for Sustainable Development and related initiatives. It became evident that, while on the one hand, organizations are strongly invited to act in the containment of world events harmful to human life, by extension, socially responsible companies must bear the commitment to work together to mitigate the impacts of climate change and to eradicating hunger and poverty, equally urgent and necessary demands
Digital transformation in the manufacturing industry under the optics of digital platforms and ecosystems
The new processes for using digital technologies, are requiring manufacturing companies to adapt to these new scenarios, causing a digital transformation. Although the theme Digital transformation is new and current in manufacturing, the way it is being implemented by manufacturing companies is in design and study. Each company adopts or plans its strategy in relation to the digital platform and digital ecosystem. Two digital technologies are widely cited when discussing digital transformation, they are the digital platform and the digital ecosystem. The purpose of this article is to analyze the digital transformation in manufacturing companies from the perspective of digital platforms and ecosystems. In order to answer the research questions, the strategy of this research project was the study of multiple cases with a longitudinal perspective and an exploratory approach. The interview was the main source of data collection. The five platforms studied presented different views of how digital transformation can occur in manufacturing companies, from the simple transaction of matching supplier and consumer to collaborative work with the different stakeholders of the companies
Healthy lungs maintain a young and energetic body
In general, life is only possible in the presence of oxygen in a form that can be easily absorbed by the body. In the case of humans, the lungs have as their main task the provision of the oxygen necessary for the body to carry out daily activities. The lung is a paired organ located in the chest cavity, a fibro-elastic organ capable of altering your volume during breathing (inspire and expire). The weight of a lung varies between 800 and 1,000 grams, of which more than 50% is blood. The air reaches the lungs through a pipeline system consisting of Nazo-pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and bronchiole. The role of the piping system is to heat and dampen the air or to capture and remove foreign inhaled particles. The channel system decreases in diameter after each branch - from the trachea and the large bronchi to the bronchiole with a diameter of less than one millimeter. The lung consists of over 30 different cell types. Trachea and large bronchi are taped by a mucous layer containing multiple cell types: ciliary cells - provides mucus movement, caliciform cells - secretes mucus, basal cells - plays a role in regeneration and neuro-ectodermic cells - ensures the secretory function of the lungs. In the chorion (the deep layer beneath the mucosa) there are cells involved in the defense processes - lymphocytes, mast cells, eosinophils or neutrophils
An evaluation of Nigerian timber production and forest reserves: focus on economic implications of food security, 1981 - 2014
The place of timber and forest reserves to national development cannot be neglected. This study evaluates level of timber production and forests reserves as well as its implications for food security in Nigeria from 1981 to 2014. The objective of the study is to evaluate the significant impact of timber production and forests reserves on food security in Nigeria. In an attempt to examine this, error correction model diagnostic tests process ECM, ADF unit root test, Structural VAR approach, and Co-integration test were employed in the data analysis. The research findings revealed that timber production and forests reserves have significant impact on food security in Nigerian economy within the period under review. In the light of the research findings, the researcher recommends that Timber production and forests reserves should be strengthened to increase the effect of forests reserves on food security in the country. This can be achieved through increased productivity and the development of agriculture value chain in federal government policy and implementation process
Impact of corporate governance on bank profitability - post reforms by RBI and SEBI
In India, the increasing awareness with respect to CG, particularly in the commercial banking industry can be attached to a variety of factors such as liberalization, scams, corporate failures in banks, accounting and other irregularities that have led to an era of rising public distrust of the governance process in the banking landscape. Because of economic problems arising out of banking mis-management and failures, studies on bank profitability have become imperative for recognizing problems and mitigating economic risks. Over the last few years, Indian banks' toxic loan pile has increased considerably in addition to frequent instances of governance lapses being identified by the regulator. Indian banks' failure to adhere to acceptable business practices has unraveled a chain of events that have caused distress to the public causing the regulator to overhaul its outlook towards CG in banks and decision to infuse capital in the banking sector to revive it. The study attempts to assess the relation between governance and other factors' impact on the bank profitability with empirical evidence from Axis, HDFC, ICICI, PNB, SBI and Yes Bank. The study outlines links between the Bank's Size, Board Independence, Independence of Audit Committee, Audit Committee Strength, Duality of Role, NPA Divergence and profit by using Return on Equity, Return on Assets and Net Interest Margin as proxies for measuring profitability. The findings indicate that Audit Committee Independence, Audit Committee Strength had a statistically significant impact on bank profits, while Bank Size had a negative affiliation to profits as per all three indicators of profits
Health care logistics: mapping and optimization of patients logistics
Healthcare logistics play an important role in management, being attributed the activities of acquisition, distribution and movement of materials, professionals and patients. This work aims to develop a study, using the healthcare logistics in the movement of patients in the third health region of Paraná, proposing a linear programming problem that will pass through a computational simulation, considering the existing demands and constraints in the system, aiming to optimize the flow of patients from this region. The present study developed four mathematical models, based on demands and constraints followed by linear programming in order to find the best possible solution for the flow of patients from the third health region of the state of Paraná. The study developed reached its goal of optimization, generating an economy in the transportation of patients. Through the analysis of the results, it is concluded that the model that best suits the presented problem is the one of costs minimization, since the one of vehicles presented higher costs. Possibly the model that minimizes the vehicles would bring better results if the vehicles were not outsourced, but of the Ponta Grossa City Hall (PMPG). Was possible to verify the importance of the theme, especially when referring to the flow of patients in the health services due to the lack of studies with this specific approach. Even with the scarcity of data, it is possible to notice the potential for improvements on this patient transport system
COVID-19 impact on e.commerce usage
Online stores, ad portals, shopping apps have become part of everyday life in 2020-2021. The Covid-19 epidemic has rapidly forced numerous entities (public, business, and private) to become predominantly oriented to electronic commerce in the last few months (Pejić-Bach, 2021). Business in the online space faces new challenges that require additional knowledge and skills. The object of the research is the assessment how covid-19 impact on ecommerce usage in Lithuania. The aim of the work is to examine ecommerce usage in Lithuania during covid-19 pandemic. Methods: scientific literature analysis, statistical data analysis. Businesses had to offer a wider range of services in order to survive. The issue of cybersecurity has grown. Consumers have also reacted ambiguously to this situation. Not only are economic factors that determine the frequency or quantity of consumer purchases distinguished, but also social and psychological factors, such as loss of motivation or apathy. The vast majority of Lithuanian shoppers were selling local online shops. The amount of money spent on online shopping has also increased. The pandemic has increased the scope of ecommerce and the range of services in Lithuania despite the deteriorating economic and social situation
Moodle as e-learning system for esp class
The aim of the paper is to examine the correlation of the knowledge gained by students in online and offline classes, consequently, the overall performance of e-learning, as well as the effectiveness of the certain language skills among the main four (listening, speaking, reading, writing) by virtue of students’ feedback and objective experimental results using statistical methods data processing. The paper demonstrates the results of the e-learning experimental research conducted during the academic year 2020/21, including the remote learning period due to the Covid19 pandemic situation in the spring semester, at the State Agrarian and Engineering University in Podilya, Kamianets-Podilskyi, Ukraine. Online study support for ESP was personally created as a four-credit course due to ECTS in the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) with the application of Big Blue Button. The research sample is represented by 100 students majoring in veterinary medicine and enrolled in the mandatory subject of English for Specific Purposes. The group of students was enrolled in the lessons based on their bachelor curriculum. The subjects, referred to as experimental and control groups, accordingly, both wrote the primary test, at the beginning of the course, and the final one at the end. For pre-test content, the online standard test for B1 level was applied. The post-test was created by the educators, who were involved in the experiment. Due to the results procession and test analysis, it is admitted that the students of the experimental group showed slightly worse results in listening comprehension section, while having the same indicators concerning writing skills, and they had essentially worse outcomes in speaking and reading comprehension if compared to their peers from the control group. Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon non-parametrical pair tests were selected to check the statistical hypotheses, due to the character of input data
Forecasting the time stock for chemical plant protection based on computer simulations
The approach, algorithm, and intelligent system of support of decision-making of management for forecasting of time fund for the performance of the mechanized chemical protection of plants are offered. They are based on the formation of a database and knowledge of the weather from the Open Weather Map service for individual countries and their regions. They provide the formation of databases and knowledge for a given country or its region, taking into account the characteristics of natural, climatic, and industrial conditions based on computer modelling. Also, the proposed intelligent management decision support system provides a systematically accountable set of variable agrometeorological components of the mechanized chemical plant protection system and their impact on the projected time fund of the relevant work. Based on the use of the developed intelligent system of support of acceptance of administrative decisions forecasting of time fund for the performance of the mechanized chemical protection of plants and the set natural-climatic and industrial conditions is executed. The climatically admissible time fund model for mechanized chemical protection of plants during the day for May, which is described by Weibull distribution, is substantiated. The obtained research results can be used by managers of agricultural enterprises during the management processes of forecasting the time fund for the implementation of mechanized chemical plant protection. The developed intelligent decision support system provides further research on forecasting the time fund for the implementation of mechanized chemical plant protection and substantiation of its models for different countries and their regions
Positional modeling of the 2T6R robot mechanism
The positional modeling of the 2T6R robot mechanism is done for inverse kinematics, i.e. when the imposed positions of the end effector T, imposed, belonging to the final element 3, are known and the necessary positions and speeds of the two input motors, the two leading elements, are determined, 1 and 6. It is proposed to solve a simple algorithm in the program MathCad 2000, which uses for initiation the logical function If Log. The kinematic output parameters, i.e. the parameters of the foot and practically of the final effector, i.e. those of the point marked with T, will be determined for initiating the working algorithm using the logical functions, "If log (ical)", with the observation that here plays the role of parameters input; is positioned as already specified in reverse kinematics when the output is considered as input and input as output. The logical functions used, as well as the entire calculation program used, were written in Math Cad 2000
