Urbaner Protest: Revolte in der neoliberalen Stadt
No full textKämpfe für eine gerechte Gesellschaft werden heute von einem sehr heterogenen Spektrum von durch neoliberale Austeritätspolitiken betroffenen Akteurinnen und Akteuren getragen. Zu ihnen gehören MigrantInnen, undokumentierte ArbeiterInnen, Arbeitslose und Obdachlose sowie Teile der Mittelschicht, deren Lebens- und Arbeitsbedingungen prekär wurden. Das Konzept der Würde gewinnt im streit- politischen Diskurs zunehmend an Bedeutung. Vor diesem Hintergrund spüren die Beiträge des Bandes den Wechselbeziehungen zwischen unterschiedlichen Bewegungen der Streitpolitik im städtischen Raum nach und diskutieren die aus ihnen resultieren- den Herausforderungen und Chancen für Politik und Demokratie
Political Depolarization in German Public Opinion, 1980–2010
No full textLittle is known about political polarization in German public opinion. This article offers an issue-based perspective and explores trends of opinion polarization in Germany. Public opinion polarization is conceptualized and measured as alignment of attitudes. Data from the German General Social Survey (1980 to 2010) comprise attitudes towards manifold issues, which are classified into several dimensions. This study estimates multilevel models that reveal general and issue- as well as dimension-specific levels and trends in attitude alignment for both the whole German population and sub-groups. It finds that public opinion polarization has decreased over the last three decades in Germany. In particular, highly educated and more politically interested people have become less polarized over time. However, polarization seems to have increased in attitudes regarding gender issues. These findings provide interesting contrasts to existing research on the American public
Die Nutzung von Webdaten in den Sozialwissenschaften
No full textDas Kapitel bietet einen Überblick der Webdatensammlung für die sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung. Zu diesem Zweck wird nach einem praktischen Beispiel eine Übersicht der grundlegenden Webtechnologien geboten, um in einem zweiten Schritt einen vertiefenden Blick auf das Web Scraping einerseits und Programmierschnittstellen andererseits zu werfen. Die praktische Umsetzung der Webdatensammlung wird mit Code-Beispielen in der Programmiersprache R illustriert. Nach der praktischen Einführung werden Potenziale und Herausforderungen der webbasierten Sozialwissenschaft am Beispiel ausgewählter Anwendungen aus der aktuellen Forschungsliteratur diskutiert. Abschließend werden verschiedene technische und konzeptionelle Problemstellungen der Webdatensammlung dargelegt und einige weiterführende Literaturhinweise für die vertiefte Auseinandersetzung mit den Themen des Kapitels geboten
The Politics of Social Pacts
No full textThe paper develops an analytical framework for the politics of negotiated voluntary wage restraint in the context of social pacts. It argues that, in contrast to earlier political exchanges, tripartite negotiations on wage restraint under restrictive economic policies are not based on a political exchange whereby governments had to compensate trade unions for wage restraint. Rather, governments can threaten trade unions with tight monetary policy and trade unions can either engage in negotiated adjustment or suffer restrictions. Social pacts are therefore an instrument of adjustment by governments to a new economic environment, and not a tool of economic policy
The Sustainability Game: AI Technology as an Intervention for Public Understanding of Cooperative Investment
No full textCooperative behaviour is a fundamental strategy for survival; it positively affects economies, social relationships, and makes larger societal structures possible. People vary, however, in their willingness to engage in cooperative behaviour in a particular context.
Here we examine whether AI can be effectively used to to alter individuals' implicit understanding of cooperative dynamics, and hence increase cooperation and participation in public goods projects. We developed an intervention---the Sustainability Game (SG)---to allow players to experience the consequences of individual investment strategies on a sustainable society. %, when personal well being, communal space, and resources limitations are taken into consideration.
Results show that the intervention significantly increases individuals' cooperative behaviour in partially anonymised public goods contexts, but enhances competition one-on-one. This indicates our intervention does improve transparency of the systemic consequences of individual cooperative behaviour
