    Short communication: Estimation of genetic trends for body weight traits in Markhoz goat at different ages

    The objective of the present study was to estimate genetic trends for body weight at different ages in Markhoz goat, including birth weight (BW, n = 4758), weaning weight (WW, n= 3685), 6-month weight (6MW, n = 3420), 9-month weight (9MW, n = 3032) and 12-month weight (12MW, n = 2697). Data and pedigree information were collected from 1992 until 2014 at the Breeding Center of Markhoz goat, Sanandaj, Iran. The GLM procedure of SAS was used for selecting the variables and identifying significant fixed effects in the equation of model. Various animal models were applied for genetic analysis and the best model was determined based on Akaike information criteria (AIC). Breeding values of animals were predicted using Wombat program. Genetic trends were obtained by regressing the average predicted breeding values on birth year for each trait. Based on the best model, direct estimated genetic trends were positive and significance for WW, 6MW, 9MW and 12 MW were 15.51, 26.28, 58.36 and 76.70 g/year, respectively (p<0.001). Maternal genetic trend for BW and WW were 0.61 and 5.47 g/year, respectively (p<0.01). The low and moderate generic trends obtained in the present study, indicated the possibility of growth traits improvements through genetic selection at all ages in Markhoz goat

    Genetic diversity of Raspberry leaf blotch emaravirus in red raspberries from Serbia

    Raspberry leaf blotch emaravirus (RLBV) is a recently characterised virus infecting raspberries reported in several European countries. RLBV causes yellow blotching, the distortion of leaf margins, and the twisting of raspberry leaves. For a long time, similar symptoms were attributed to the feeding damage caused by raspberry leaf and bud mite (Phyllocoptes gracilis). From 2014−2017, a large-scale survey was conducted in Serbia to investigate the degree of association of the observed symptoms with the RLBV infection. A total of 98 symptomatic and asymptomatic samples were collected from 30 locations. All collected samples were tested on the RLBV presence by reverse transcription and polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) using three sets of RNA-specific primers targeting RNA-1, RNA-3, and RNA-5 of the RLBV genome. RT-PCR analysis revealed high incidence of RLBV in tested samples (68.7%). RLBV was confirmed in raspberries ‘Fertödi Zamatos’, ‘Glen Ample’, ‘Meeker’, ‘Polana’, ‘Tulameen’ and ‘Willamette’. Twenty-one isolates were selected for sequencing the portion of the nucleocapsid (NC) gene. The nucleotide sequences of the isolates showed 93.2−100% identity. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed significant genetic variability of the Serbian RLBV isolates based on the nucleocapsid-encoding sequences and revealed the existence of two main clusters.     Effect of warming temperatures on donkey sperm vitrification in 0.5 mL straws in comparison to conventional freezing

    Aim of study: There is little information about vitrification of sperm in large volumes (up to 0.5 mL). This study aimed to develop the vitrification technique in 0.5 mL straws in donkey sperm, evaluating the effect of three warming temperatures.Area of study: Cordoba, Spain.Material and methods: Ejaculates from five donkeys were divided in four groups: one control subjected to conventional slow freezing (C) and three vitrified in 0.5 mL straws and warmed using different protocols (W1: 37ºC/30s, W2: 43ºC/20s and W3: 70ºC/8s+37ºC/52s). Sperm motility, kinematic parameters, plasma membrane and acrosome integrity were evaluated. Conventional freezing resulted in significantly higher values for total (42.7±19.6%), and progressive motility (30.3±16.7%), plasma membrane (49.1±10.4%) and acrosome integrity (39.6±14.5%) respect to vitrification method.Main results: Values after warming ranged between 0.2-2.8% for total motility; 0.2-2.1% for progressive motility; 5.5-20.0% for plasma membrane integrity and 14.5-29.8% for acrosome integrity in all warming protocols after sperm vitrification. However, no differences were found between W3 and C for kinematic parameters; and W3 resulted in significantly higher values for membrane integrity (20.0±11.0%) in comparison to W1 (5.5±3.6%) and W2 (9.3±8.4%).Research highlights: High warming rates seem to be better for donkey sperm vitrification in large volumes; but this methodology is still not an alternative to conventional sperm freezing

    Film mulching combined with cow manure increases soil C and N

    Aim of study: A field study was conducted to assess responses of soil organic C (SOC) and total N (TN) to film mulching and manure, which were important in identifying the changes of SOC and TN.Area of study: A semiarid area in northwestern China.Material and methods: The field (soil classified as CumuliUstic Isohumosol) has been planted with spring maize (Zea mays L.) for years. Three treatments were: 1) NPK fertilization and no film mulching (CK), 2) NPK fertilization and film mulching (PF) and 3) film mulching and NPK fertilization combined with cow manure (OMF).Main results: Compared with CK, OMF significantly increased SOC and TN, while no significant effect was observed under PF. The average increases of SOC storage in OMF were 39.2% in 0-10 cm layer and 34.3% in 10-20 cm layer. The average increases of TN storage were 37.6% in 0-10 cm layer and 31.3% in 10-20 cm layer, relative to CK. Compared with the initial SOC (8.86 g/kg) and TN (0.99 g/kg), CK and PF decreased 1.4% and 6.9% of SOC, and 9.1% and 17.2% of TN, whereas OMF increased SOC and TN. The SOC/TN was not affected by treatments but slight increase was observed since the beginning of experiment. Both PF and OMF significantly increased maize grain yields (on average 45.8% and 75.7%, respectively) compared with CK.Research highlights: Manure combined with film mulching significantly increased soil C and N, ameliorating harmful effects of plastic film mulching, improving soil fertility in the long term and increasing crop yields

    Disease classification in Solanum melongena using deep learning

    Aim of study: The application of pre-trained deep learning models, AlexNet and VGG16, for classification of five diseases (Epilachna beetle infestation, little leaf, Cercospora leaf spot, two-spotted spider mite and Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV)) and a healthy plant in Solanum melongena (brinjal in Asia, eggplant in USA and aubergine in UK) with images acquired from smartphones.Area of study: Images were acquired from fields located at Alangudi (Pudukkottai district), Tirumalaisamudram and Pillayarpatti (Thanjavur district) – Tamil Nadu, India.Material and methods: Most of earlier studies have been carried out with images of isolated leaf samples, whereas in this work the whole or part of the plant images were utilized for the dataset creation. Augmentation techniques were applied to the manually segmented images for increasing the dataset size. The classification capability of deep learning models was analysed before and after augmentation. A fully connected layer was added to the architecture and evaluated for its performance.Main results: The modified architecture of VGG16 trained with the augmented dataset resulted in an average validation accuracy of 96.7%. Despite the best accuracy, all the models were tested with sample images from the field and the modified VGG16 resulted in an accuracy of 93.33%.Research highlights: The findings provide a guidance for possible factors to be considered in future research relevant to the dataset creation and methodology for efficient prediction using deep learning models

    Short communication: Using infrared ocular thermography as a tool to predict meat quality from lean cattle breeds prior to slaughter: Exploratory trial

    Aim of study: To assess the potential of using infrared ocular thermography (IROT) as a tool to predict beef quality at the slaughterhouse.Area of study: The study was carried out in the Salteras’s slaughterhouse (Seville, Spain).Material and methods: Ocular temperature images were captured from 175 lean young bulls prior to slaughter. Carcasses were classified into three groups according to weight: ˂250 kg, 250-310 kg and ˃310 kg. IROT was measured just before slaughter and pH was measured 24 h later. Colour parameters (CIELAB space) were evaluated 48 h post-slaughter. Water holding capacity was evaluated at seven days after slaughter.Main results: IROT mean values were higher in heavier bulls (p<0.05), probably due to these animals appeared to movilize a greater blood flow, thus increasing ocular temperature. Furthermore, IROT showed a statistically significant correlation with both pH from light carcasses (r=0.66; p<0.001), and mean Hue value from all carcass weights (r=-0.22; p<0.05). A quadratic regression analysis accounting carcass weight as a continuous variable, found medium to strong fit values for pH (R2=0.52; RMSE=0.032; p<0.01) and medium fit values for H* (R2=0.41; RMSE=3.793; p<0.001), changing their relation with IROT depending on carcass weight.Research highlights: IROT showed potential to become a useful tool to assess pH in light carcasses and to assess H* in all carcasses of young bulls prior to slaughter, regardless their weight. However, further studies would be recommended under more variable pre-slaughter stress conditions

    Grain number and grain weight as determinants of triticale, wheat, two-rowed and six-rowed barley yield in the Pannonian environment

    Climate significantly affects cropping systems across Europe. Knowledge of the variability in grain number per unit area and grain weight across different growing seasons and its association with grain yield is important for further improving small grain crop production. The main aim of this study was to compare grain yield and its numerical components among triticale, wheat, two-rowed and six-rowed barley cultivars across different growing seasons in a typical Pannonian location (south-eastern part of Central Europe). Trials with twelve winter cereal genotypes (three two-rowed barley, three six-rowed barley, three wheat and three triticale genotypes) were carried out in four successive seasons in Novi Sad, Serbia. Results of this study showed that growing season, species, cultivar, and species × growing season interaction significantly (p<0.01) affected grain yield and its determinants. Generally, triticale had higher average grain yield, while the lowest grain yield was recorded in six-rowed barleys. Grain yield was more associated with the number of grains/m2 than with grain weight. Heading date was recognized as one of the important adaptive traits in crop development and yield determination. Short duration of the pre-anthesis phase in early cultivars and delayed anthesis in late cultivars significantly decreased the number of grains/spike in different species/spike types, reducing the final grain yield. Medium early cultivars had the highest number of grains/spike due to optimal duration of the pre-anthesis period and heading date and are suggested as recommendable for large scale production in the Pannonian environments

    Use of different waste waters from the leachate of the mushroom production process as foliar fertilizers: Effects on grape amino acids concentration

    The production of edible mushrooms presents a serious problem for the environment, since about 5 kg of waste are produced for each kilogram of mushroom. These waste waters have nitrogenous matter. Thus, the aim was to investigate the effect of foliar applications of waste water from the mushroom production process on must amino acid composition during two seasons compared to other nitrogen sources. The treatments were applied to the vineyard at veraison and one week later at a total dose of 0.9 kg N/ha. Amino acids were analysed by HPLC. Results showed that treated mushroom water (Tmw) and mushroom water (Mw) improved the amino acid concentration in both seasons differentially. Tmw applied to the grapevines increased total amino acids concentration from 1479.58 to 1735.90 mg/L compared to untreated grapevines over the second study season. The effectiveness of the applications depends on grapevines nitrogen needs. Under moderate nitrogen conditions, Tmw and Mw applications seem to be more effective than urea and phenylalanine treatments. These results are important in relation to the sustainable management of the agri-food sector

    Dietary supplementation with papaya (Carica papaya L.) leaf affects abundance of rumen methanogens, fermentation characteristics and blood plasma fatty acid composition in goats

    The objective of this study was to test the effect of feeding papaya leaf (PL) on rumen microbial population, fermentation characteristics, blood fatty acid composition and antioxidant activity in goats. Three rumen fistulated male goats were assigned in a 3×3 latin square design using three levels of PL: no addition of PL in basal diet (control, CON, 50% concentrate + 50% alfalfa hay), 25% of alfalfa hay in basal diet replaced by PL (medium PL, MPL) and 50% of alfalfa hay in basal diet replaced by PL (high PL, HPL). Rumen fluid and blood plasma were sampled from the animals at the end of feeding trial (third week). Papaya leaf treatments (MPL and HPL) showed significant differences (p<0.05) in terms of rumen fermentation parameters as compared to the CON group at different times of measurement. The concentration of methanogenic archaea (log10cell/L) decreased (p<0.05) in both PL treatment groups as compared with CON group at all sampling times. The concentration of α-linolenic acid and total conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) were also higher (p<0.05) in the blood of goats fed PL especially HPL, compared to the CON. Blood plasma malondialdehyde concentration (mM/mL) of PL treatment groups showed a significant reduction as compared with CON. Supplementation of PL allowed the modulation of rumen characteristics which might represent a feeding strategy to reduce methane emission by directly inhibiting methanogens while improving the health benefits of ruminant products
