CILEA has organized a national conference to present to the academical and scientific research world (in general) the system SURplus (Sistema Universitario Ricerca plus), the technological platform created by CILEA to give an actual answer, reliable, performing to the problem of governance of research activities within universities.CILEA ha organizzato un convegno nazionale per presentare al mondo accademico e della ricerca (in generale) il sistema SURplus (Sistema Universitario Ricerca plus), la piattaforma tecnologica realizzata da CILEA per dare una risposta concreta, seria, performante al problema della “Governance” delle attività di ricerca all’interno degli atenei
Grid computing is now an essential daily tool for an ever increasing number of researchers and scientists to meet their e-science challenges. As EGEE and related grid infrastructures move towards a sustainable, interoperable model it is important for new and existing Grid users to come together with national, regional and scientific audiences to develop and consolidate plans for a reliable, seamless infrastructure on a global scale. The EGEE conference provides the perfect opportunity for both business and academic sectors to network with the EGEE communities, collaborating infrastructure and application projects, developers, decision makers alike, to realize this vision and make it happen.
CASPUR HPC Grant 2009: risultati e prospettive
With the aim of promoting the use of high-performance computing in scientific research, CASPUR has periodically invited researchers from universities, public and private research institutions, to submit scientific projects for free allocation of computing resources. The acquisition of the new computer facility, named 'Matrix' (an HPC cluster with 2640 core, interconnected in InfiniBand technology), has enabled CASPUR HPC Department to expand the computer resources offered to the Italian and international scientific community. The strategy of the 2009 HPC grants call is twofold: on the one hand to involve a very large user base, distributed over the whole national territory, i.e. beyond the limits of the universities member of the CASPUR consortium; and, on the other hand to give significant amount of resources to few projects, very ambitious from both scientific and computational point of view. Therefore the 2009 HPC grant initiative, named CASPUR HPC Grant 2009, is divided into two calls: Standard HPC Grant 2009, for projects requiring up to 80,000 hours/core over 9 months, and Competitive HPC Grant 2009, for projects requiring up to 1,000,000 hours/core over 18 months. 136 projects (15 Competitive) have been approved and more than 14,000,000hours/core allocated. After the success of HPC Grant 2009 initiative, CASPUR will replicate and improve its offer of HPC Grant, increasing, if possible, the size and performance of its HPC systems available to their users
Il modello di tasking in OpenMP
The widespread adoption of multicore processors in all kind of computing devices is springing interest for parallel computing, which is the only approach to achieve the promised performance boosts. Parallel computing is not easy, and the resulting complexity, which is usually tolerated in the computational science field, must be strictly controlled in commercial software life cycles. OpenMP is a widely supported industrial standard for parallel computing on multiprocessors systems. Its basic principles, simplicity and incremental approach, make it an extremely productive paradigm. Up to version 2.5, OpenMP didn’t directly support parallelization of algorithms in which more work is generated dynamically and with irregular patterns as data are processed. These algorithms are of growing relevance in the scientific realm, and are widespread in most commercial software. OpenMP 3.0 introduced a new tasking model, that allows work to be dynamically generated and assigned to idle processors. CASPUR was a very active contributor to the new model development
Direct numerical simulations of a turbulent channel flow with 2D wedges of randomheight on the bottom wall have been performed. In addition, two other simulationshave been carried out to assess the effect of the geometry on the overlying flow. In thefirst simulation, the four smallest elements were removed while in the other a uniformdistribution of wedges with the same area was used. Two Reynolds numbers were studied,Reb=2500 and Reb =5000 which correspond in case of smooth walls to Ret=180 and300 respectively. Roughness on the wall induces separated regions, the reattachmentoccurring on the walls of the wedges or on the bottom walls. The pressure gradients onthe walls increase the ejections and inrushes towards the wall. As a consequence theflow is more isotropic. The mechanism inducing an improved isotropy has been explainedin the paper by spectra and budgets of Reynolds stress. The comparison of the 3 surfaces has shown that near the wall, the uniformly distributedroughness represents only a poor approximation of the surface with wedges ofrandom height. The Reynolds stresses, pressure distribution and spectra on the modifiedwall agree well with those on the random surface.Pressure distribution, Reynolds stress budgets, spectra, and turbulence intensitieshave been compared to identify the geometrical parameters which can define a randomrough wall. Energy spectra show the pitch to height ratio of the largest elements to bethe more appropriate. The mechanism leading to an increase of isotropy near the rough surface has beenexplained through the budgets of turbulence intensities.Numerical simulations of turbulent channels have been exploited thanks to CASPUR,which provided its high performance computing infrastructure
In this article we present the application of computational fluid dynamics analysis to the case of sail wind engi¬neering. In particular the context, the method and the perspectives of such approach are discussed referring to the largest CFD case ever performed on a Americas Cup size yacht. This work is the main output of an ongoing scientific collaboration among CILEA and academics and industrial partners concerning the applicability of CFD analysis to wind engineering design.
