ABSTRACT This research is focused on characterization of activated carbon from solid waste CPO industries and applying for treatments of gambut water for iron removal in aqueous media. Key parameters in the present study include TSS, DO, pH and total phenol is also determinated. Methods of sampling and analytical techniques for measuring key parameters are by using extended method. The small model has been developed by combining of the composting and adsorption technology.  The coagulant material such as filter alum, soda caustic, and calcium hypochlorite in any ratios are varied and the optimum condition is achieved. The activated carbon is used as adsorbent by using column model. The overall results show that after coagulation and adsorption processes the total iron, TSS, DO and pH are under threshold levels (Indonesian Regulation) and suitable for drinking water meanwhile other parameters are still uncovered in this investigation. Tentatively, it can be concluded that the proposed gambit water design has achieved the optimum condition. A further study on the improvement of the treatment design and service time for adsorption process is still in progress. Keywords : total iron, gambut water, activated carbon, combining model

ABSTRACTThe effect of addition oleat acid 1.575 × 10-4M into membrane phase had been employed at the optimum condition of Cu(II) transport by the composition Cu(II) 3.15 × 10-4M as source phase with pH 3, oxine 17.5 × 10-4M dissolved into chloroform as membrane phase, H2SO4 0.15 M as receiving phase, stirring rate was 340 rpm. The result of the research showed increase in effectivity of transport Cu(II) interphase from 6 hours to 3 hours with the rate constants into membrane phase extraction (k1) 0.0454 minute-1, the stripping (k2) 0.0364 minute-1 at the temperature of 301°K and activation energy (Ea) 51.147 Kj/mol. The reaction was identified by means of kinetic model involving two consecutive irreversible first order. The selectivity of Cu(II) transport system analyzed to mixed Cu(II) ion with Cd(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Mg(II), Ca(II) and Sr(II) ions in pairing system or totaly system in 1 : 1 comparison. The measurement was performed to each ions that was transported receiving phase and the remains in resource phase by using SSA model Alfa-4. The result of research showed that Cu(II) was selective enough transported.  Keywords: Kinetic transportation, Cu(II) ions, oxine, oleat acid, selectivity  Â

ABSTRACT Graphene has future prospect for electronics. By adding some substituents this material can be tuned to behave like a metal or semiconductor. In this investigation, a planar single layer of modified graphene, C24H12-mLim (m = 0, 3, 6, and 12) consisted of seven six-member rings was used to adsorb the oncoming hydrogen (perpendicular to the surface, was defined as Had). A planar twolayer graphene C48H24 (7+7) was also included. To determine the adsorption models and the Had couverage, a semiempiris Calzaferri program, works on pentium 4 windows 98, was used to optimize nHad (n = 1, 2, and 3) that reached the surfaces. The heat of Had adsorption and the band gap of the surfaces were also computed. Results of these computations showed that: (1) the adsorption process was endothermic and Li reduced the heat of Had adsorption on the surfaces. (2) Li reduced the band gap of the surfaces, so C24H12 was a semiconductor but C24Li12 a conductor. (3) The adsorbed nHad always lowered the band gap of the surfaces, in exception of C24Li12 could be lower or higher. (4) Each atom on the surfaces, in exception hydrogen, might adsorb nHad formed tilted (with C) and lying down (with Li) surface complexes, and for C24H6Li6 an asymmetric twofold complex was also observed. (5) However, the Had couverage was low, some Had formed H2 and this was not observed on C24H6Li6. (6) The C48H24 kept an H2 molecule between layers. Thus, a new material C24H6Li6 which had two adsorption models, might increase the Had couverage, but had lower conductivity than that of C24H12. On the other hand, it is necessary to study in more details the hydrogen storage between graphene layers.        Key words: graphene, adsorption, substituen

DETERMINATION OF CYCLODEXTRINS BY CAPILLARY LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY WITH INDIRECT CONDUCTIMETRIC DETECTION

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT Cyclodextrins (CDs) contained in a bottled Japanese tea and a wasabi (Japanese horseradish) paste were determined by capillary liquid chromatography (LC) with indirect conductimetric detection based on dilution of the mobile phase due to the analytes. High electrical conductivity background was maintained by addition of 5 mM sodium nitrate in the mobile phase, and the analytes were visualized by decreases in the background when they eluted. The dynamic reserve, defined as the ratio of the background to its noise level, achieved under the present conditions was 1.7×105, which was much larger than that achieved by UV absorption detection. This means that indirect conductimetric detection gave better sensitivity than indirect UV absorption detection. A capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detector was convenient to monitor the effluents from capillary columns with minimum extra-column band broadening. The signals as negative peaks were linear to the concentration of the analytes, and the concentration detection limits achieved at S/N=3 were 0.02, 0.05 and 0.02% (w/v) for α-, β- and γ-CD, respectively, corresponding to the mass detection limits of 30-75 ng for 0.15 μL injection. The present detection method is not selective but universal, and it is useful in capillary LC when analytes have neither chromophore nor fluorophore groups. Keywords: Capillary liquid chromatography, Indirect conductimetric detection, Capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detector, Cyclodextrin
