Information packaging strategies serving the communicative needs of speakers
No full textThis paper presents the findings of a study of diverse information packaging strategies employed by speakers of English to better serve their communicative needs in given contexts, based on examples
from the British National Corpus (BNC). More precisely, the analysis centres around the information packaging possibilities offered by light verb constructions (LVCs) in comparison to their full verb counterparts. As is conventionally recognised in previous studies, LVCs formally stretch the predicate over a verbal and a nominal element (e.g. to order vs to give an order). It is precisely this fact that makes it possible for speakers to structure their utterances in various ways. He analyzes female hodonyms, official forms of commemorating women in Białystok and female dendronyms in the Białowieża Primeval Forest, as well as acts of civic commemorations. literatury z Podlasiem. Przedmiotem analizy są trzy powieści: Pokolenia: wiek deszczu, wiek słońca, Pokolenia: powrót do domu oraz Gospoda pod Bocianem. Powieści te są przykładem powrotu literackiego i osobistego pisarki, a także wykorzystania tzw. pamiętników, zdjęć i wspomnień jako literackiego tworzywa. W analizie autorka odwołuje się do teorii Umberta Eco i Ryszarda Nycza, pokazując także, w jaki sposób powieść rodzinna może stać się nośnikiem pamięci kulturowej. Jednocześnie, celem artykułu jest pokazanie osobistego doświadczenia Katarzyny Drogiej oraz tego, w jaki sposób to doświadczenie przekłada się na literaturę, staje się tworzywem literackim. Tym samym powrót pisarki do rodzinnych stron odbywa się na dwóch płaszczyznach, literackiej i osobistej, a Katarzyna Droga dołącza do literackiej mapy autorek Podlasia.The author discusses three books by Katarzyna Droga that have been published recently, that is, Pokolenia: wiek deszczu, wiek słońca, Pokolenia: powrót do domu, and Gospoda pod Bocianem, in which she recalls the memories of her mother and refers to her own experience of storytelling and storyfinding. In addition, the author analyses the literary process and creativity of the writer. At the same time, the author stresses the importance of family memories to the autobiographical memory and cultural memory of Podlasie. The Scope of Jurisdiction in Cross-Border Intellectual Property Disputes: Tackling Online Copyright Infringements
No full textThe aim of this paper is to analyse critically the problems stemming from the current model of enforcing protection in cases of online copyright infringements. The Internet allows for the easy dissemination and exploitation of copyrighted works globally. Remote and immediate access to content may result in simultaneous infringement on a worldwide scale. There is a long history of disputes over the enforcement of protection with regard to online copyright infringement, and while new laws and judgments are passed there are still no effective remedies nor consensus regarding a common approach to the problem of the multiplicity of applicable laws and jurisdictions in the event of infringement – a problem that derives mainly from the principle of the territoriality of intellectual property rights. Throughout the years there have been many attempts to solve it, mostly in the form of soft law instruments. None of the recommendations are binding, therefore the obligation to reconcile the right to the protection of copyright with the limits of the jurisdiction falls on national courts. Direct oral anticoagulants across the heart failure spectrum: the precision medicine era
No full textHeart failure (HF) is characterized by a pro-thrombotic state, which might aggravate its morbidity and, consequently, mortality. Several and commonly observed comorbidities, such as coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation (AF), renal dysfunction, and diabetes often complicate HF, increasing the thromboembolic risk. In the past decade, direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have been approved for the treatment and prevention of stroke and embolic events in patients with nonvalvular AF. Due to their lower bleeding risk, these drugs are frequently used instead of warfarin; however, some controversies exist on their use in HF patients with or without comorbidities. Indeed, the management of anticoagulation in HF patients with underlying conditions is poorly investigated since these patients are underrepresented or excluded from randomized controlled trials. The aim of this research is to review current evidence on the use of DOACs in HF patients, also discussing their specific use in different clinical scenarios. [Figure not available: see fulltext.
Professionswissen zum Verhältnis von Sucht und gesellschaftlichen Integrationsprozessen
Get PDFObwohl innerhalb des neueren Professionalisierungsdiskurses der Sozialen Arbeit zunehmend das Wissen und Können von Berufspraktiker*innen in der Praxis fokussiert wird, ist das Professionswissen der Sozialen Arbeit ein bislang nur sehr gering beforschtes Feld. Zentral wird hierbei im Diskurs stets thematisiert und diskutiert, welches Wissen professionell handelnde Sozialarbeitende in der Praxis benötigen, wie sich dieses strukturiert und welche Relevanz dabei dem wissenschaftlich fundierten Wissen zukommt. In dieser Bachelorthesis soll daran anknüpfend aufgezeigt werden, wie das Wissen zu den Zusammenhängen zwischen Substanzabhängigkeit, Fluchtmigration und Integrationsprozessen im Aufnahmeland bei Sozialarbeitenden des noch recht jungen Handlungsfeldes substanzabhängiger Geflüchteter in der niedrigschwelligen Suchthilfe verhandelt sowie strukturiert und genutzt wird. Dabei soll ebenfalls untersucht werden, wie die Wissensinhalte Einzug in die Praxis erhalten und welchen Veränderungen sie dort im Arbeitsalltag unterliegen. Hierzu wurden Leitfadeninterviews mit Sozialarbeitenden geführt, welche in verschiedenen Einrichtungen innerhalb der niedrigschwelligen Suchthilfe tätig sind. Eine zentrale Erkenntnis dieser Thesis stellt dabei dar, dass die Sozialarbeitenden grundsätzlich über ausreichendes theoretisches Rahmenwissen verfügen und versuchen dieses in den Praxisalltag zu integrieren, die Gegebenheiten innerhalb eines Handlungsfeldes in verschiedenen Einrichtungen beziehungsweise Städten jedoch ebenso wie die Erfahrungen und Formen der Berührungspunkte mit der Klientel so unterschiedlich ausfallen können, dass theoretisches Wissenschaftswissen nie vollständig auf einen konkreten Einzelfall bezogen werden kann, sondern immer als Hintergrundwissen im oftmals erfahrungsgeleiteten Handeln mitschwingt, was zwangsläufig einer kontinuierlichen Reflexion mit den Grenzen des eigenen Wissens bedarf. Towards Autonomous Process Control—Digital Twin for HIV-Gag VLP Production in HEK293 Cells Using a Dynamic Metabolic Model
Get PDFDespite intensive research over the last three decades, it has not yet been possible to bring an effective vaccine against human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the resulting acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) to market. Virus-like particles (VLP) are a promising approach for efficient and effective vaccination and could play an important role in the fight against HIV. For example, HEK293 (human embryo kidney) cells can be used to produce virus-like particles. In this context, given the quality-by-design (QbD) concept for manufacturing, a digital twin is of great importance for the production of HIV-Gag-formed VLPs. In this work, a dynamic metabolic model for the production of HIV-Gag VLPs was developed and validated. The model can represent the VLP production as well as the consumption or formation of all important substrates and metabolites. Thus, in combination with already described process analytical technology (PAT) methods, the final step towards the implementation of a digital twin for process development and design, as well as process automation, was completed
Synthesis of Polymer Precursor 12-Oxododecenoic Acid Utilizing Recombinant Papaya Hydroperoxide Lyase in an Enzyme Cascade
Get PDFHydroperoxide lyases (HPLs) catalyze the splitting of 13S-hydroperoxyoctadecadienoic acid (13S-HPODE) into the green note flavor hexanal and 12-oxo-9(Z)-dodecenoic acid, which is not yet used industrially. Here, HPL from Carica papaya (HPLCP) was cloned and functionally expressed in Escherichia coli to investigate synthesis of 12-oxo-9(Z)-dodecenoic acid in detail. To improve the low catalytic activity of full-length HPLCP, the hydrophobic, non-conserved N-terminal sequence was deleted. This enhanced enzyme activity from initial 10 to 40 U/l. With optimization of solubilization buffer, expression media enzyme activity was increased to 2700 U/l. The tetrameric enzyme was produced in a 1.5 l fermenter and enriched by affinity chromatography. The enzyme preparation possesses a slightly acidic pH optimum and a catalytic efficiency (kcat/KM) of 2.73 × 106 s−1·M−1 towards 13S-HPODE. Interestingly, HPLCP-N could be applied for the synthesis of 12-oxo-9(Z)-dodecenoic acid, and 1 mM of 13S-HPODE was transformed in just 10 s with a yield of 90%. At protein concentrations of 10 mg/ml, the slow formation of the 10(E)-isomer traumatin was observed, pointing to a non-enzymatic isomerization process. Bearing this in mind, a one-pot enzyme cascade starting from safflower oil was developed with consecutive addition of Pseudomonas fluorescens lipase, Glycine max lipoxygenase (LOX-1), and HPLCP-N. A yield of 43% was obtained upon fast extraction of the reaction mixtures after 1 min of HPLCP-N reaction. This work provides first insights into an enzyme cascade synthesis of 12-oxo-9(Z)-dodecenoic acid, which may serve as a bifunctional precursor for bio-based polymer synthesis
Peri-Urban Growth into Natural Hazard-Prone Areas: Mapping Exposure Transformation of the Built Environment in Nairobi and Nyeri, Kenya, from 1948 to Today
Get PDFKenya experiences massive urban growth, also into natural hazard-prone areas, exposing settlements and the natural environment to riverine and pluvial floods and other natural hazards. While Nairobi as the capital and principal city has been extensively analysed regarding urban growth and flood hazard in some central parts, awareness of growing peri-urban areas has not been studied as much. The results are of interest to other locations in Kenya and worldwide, too, since the current research and disaster risk practice focus is still too much on megacities and city centres. Therefore, the study compares urban growth into hazard areas in urban rims of Nairobi and Nyeri, Kenya. A change assessment from 1948 to 2020 is conducted by aerial images, declassified satellite images, and recent data. Urban growth rates are 10- to 26-fold, while growth into flood exposed areas ranges from 2- to 100-fold. This study reveals unused opportunities for expanding existing land-use change analysis back to the 1940s in data-scarce environments
Analysis of Tire Wear Airstrip Particles (TWAP)
Get PDFTire wear is a main contributor to microplastics. As we cannot fully avoid tire wear, otherwise we could not brake and stop, new solutions are needed to address this problem. Not only on roads tire wear is released to the environment, even more can be found at airports. The advantage there is that the Tire Wear Airstrip Particles are gathered while cleaning the pavement. This collection is an opportunity to recycle and add new value to it. Whereas rubber powder is a common way to recycle and reuse end-of-life-tires as raw material in rubber compounds, the question is if TWAP is reusable in the same or similar way. In this study TWAP and rubber powder from truck tire treads are analyzed and compared with regard to their morphology, particle size distribution and composition. The particle size distribution of TWAP is broader than rubber powder containing also much smaller particles. The mineral content of TWAP is about 60%. These minerals can be residues of the pavement, brake wear but also rubber ingredients. In comparison to rubber powder, the impurities of TWAP are expected to have an impact with regard to potential applications and should be better separated
