Opportunities and Challenges in the Chinese Electric Vehicle Market: Insights for (Re)insurers
Full text linkChina has firmly established itself as the world's largest EV market. In 2024, the market is expected to reach 1.29 trillion by 2030. If we look at the graph below: according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), more than 50% of the world’s electric cars are sold in China in 2023. Compared to other countries and regions, such as Europe, United States and the rest of the world, China is growing at an unprecedented speed. This remarkable growth is driven by strong government incentives and support, increasing consumer demand, and significant investments in infrastructure. The government has set aggressive targets for EV adaptions, in order to target environmental concerns, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and dominate the new technologies. Amongst 130 brands of EV manufacturers, BYD (short for Build Your Dreams) and Tesla dominate the market, with BYD holding nearly 33% market share and Tesla over 8%. The market is characterized by a wide variety of EV models, from compact city cars to luxury sedans, catering to diverse consumer preferences
Die Umsetzung der UN-Behindertenrechtskonvention im Bereich der Inklusiven Bildung – ein Blick auf die Situation im Irak und in Deutschland
Full text linkInklusive Bildung ist seit der Unterzeichnung der UN-BRK durch die Vertragsstaaten zu einem globalen Ziel geworden. Artikel 24 der UN-BRK möchte das Recht auf Bildung für Alle gewährleisten. Weltweit leben 80% der Menschen mit Behinderung in Ländern mit instabiler Infrastruktur und ohne Zugang zu Bildung. Eines dieser Länder ist der Irak. Obwohl diesbezüglich in den letzten Jahrzehnten global viele Bestrebungen unternommen wurden, ist das Ziel dort längst noch nicht erreicht. Inwiefern wird Inklusive Bildung im Irak und Deutschland umgesetzt? Mit dem Fokus auf den Irak widmet sich diese Arbeit den Herausforderungen bei der Implementierung des Artikel 24 und zeigt wie Konflikte im Irak und separierende Schulsysteme in Deutschland die Inklusion von Menschen mit Behinderung, speziell im Bildungsbereich, erschweren. Die essenzielle Rolle von internationalen Kooperationen und der Arbeit von NGOs wird anhand von Beispielen in den Fokus genommen
Praxis und Forschung zu Risikotransfer von Cyber-Risiken
Full text linkDie Bedrohung durch Cyber-Risiken ist in der heutigen vernetzten Welt allgegenwärtig. Die unvorhersehbaren und weitreichenden Auswirkungen stellen eine erhebliche Bedrohung für die internationale Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft dar. In der Versicherungswirtschaft fällt es oft Erstversicherern schwer, ausreichend Kapazitäten für diese Risiken zu erhalten. So ließen nach einem Report von Gallagher Re ca. 50 % der weltweiten Cyberprämien in den Rückversicherungsmarkt (vgl. Newman, 2022). Nach unterschiedlichen Quellen und Aussagen der Industrie werden die Cyber-Risiken häufig in Form der proportionalen Rückversicherung an die Rückversicherer weitergegeben. Aufgrund der Problematik, dass das Cyber-Underwriting sich noch in einer frühen Phase befindet, ist derzeit noch unklar, welche Risiken die Cyber-Versicherer zeichnen und welche Ausmaße solche Schäden annehmen können (vgl. Pache, 2024). Sollte eine Reduzierung der Kapazität eintreten, hätte dies zur Folge, dass ein strengeres Underwriting folgen könnte, was häufig mit einem verkürzten Versicherungsschutz, höheren Anforderungen an die Sicherheitsmaßnahmen sowie größeren Selbstbehalten einhergeht. Für Versicherungsnehmer, insbesondere für KMU, hätte dies zur Folge, dass sie deutlich höhere Versicherungsprämien zahlen müssten oder im schlimmsten Fall die Kriterien für den Versicherungsschutz nicht erfüllen und somit keinen Versicherungsschutz mehr erhalten (vgl. Skeoch & Ioannidis, 2024)
Räumliche Beschäftigungsmuster im Kölner Online- und Hybridhandel
Full text linkDie Digitalisierung des Einzelhandels geht mit Veränderungen der Arbeitsverhältnisse einher. Als zuletzt im Zuge der Coronapandemie der Online- und Hybridhandel (stationär und digital) expandierte, wurden auch damit verbundene prekäre Arbeitsbedingungen sichtbar. Gleichzeitig entstanden aber auch anspruchsvolle Arbeitsplätze, beispielsweise in IT und Verwaltung. Dies weist auf eine Polarisierung hin, die sich – getrieben vor allem durch technischen Wandel – gleichzeitig durch eine starke Ausprägung von Arbeitsverhältnissen auszeichnet, die einerseits nur geringe formale Qualifikationen erfordert und gering entlohnt wird und andererseits höhere formale Ausbildungsabschlüsse erfordert und besser entlohnt wird, während mittlere Qualifikationsstufen weniger ausgeprägt sind. Bisher gibt es jedoch kaum systematische und differenzierte Untersuchungen, die belastbare Aussagen zu regionalen oder lokalen Mustern von Arbeitsbedingungen im Online- und Hybridhandel erlauben. Dabei ist jedoch zu erwarten, dass sich diese auch räumlich unterscheiden, etwa aufgrund unterschiedlicher Tätigkeits- und Beschäftigungsbereiche. Vor diesem Hintergrund konzentriert sich die vorliegende Arbeit auf räumliche Beschäftigungsmuster im Online- und Hybridhandel am Beispiel der Metropolregion Köln. Konkret untersucht sie auf Basis einer Betriebsbefragung vor allem von kleinen und mittelständischen Online- und Hybridhandelsbetrieben (2023–2024; n = 377), inwieweit es zu unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen von Vertragsverhältnissen, Qualifikationsanforderungen, Entlohnung und Mitbestimmung kommt. Aufgrund der Verortung der Arbeitsaufgaben ergibt sich eine räumliche Differenzierung: Gerade in den Bereichen Lagerlogistik und Zustellung wurden klare räumliche Unterschiede deutlich. Anders ist es bei Arbeitsplätzen mit höheren formalen Qualifikationsanforderungen. Hier sind die Differenzen jedoch nicht so ausgeprägt, dass von einem Auseinanderdriften der Qualifikation gesprochen werden kann. Ein räumliches Muster zeigt sich insbesondere zwischen dem urbanen Raum und den Randgebieten aufgrund der unterschiedlichen Merkmale der Beschäftigungsbereiche und der damit verbundenen Polarisierung. In den innerstädtischen Lagen werden eher Werkstudenten- und geringfügige Verträge vergeben, während in den Randgebieten größere Betriebe mit Betriebsrat und höheren formalen Qualifikationsanforderungen zu finden sind
Vorhersage von Aktienkursausschlägen mit Large Language Models auf Börsennachrichten: Eine Evaluation eines vortrainierten Modells anhand verschiedener Unternehmenskennzahlen
Full text linkIm Bereich der Sprachmodelle existieren Methoden zur Analyse und Bewertung menschlicher Texte in Form eines Sentiment-Score, der die positive oder negative Stimmung eines Textes bewertet. Im Finanzsektor können solche Modelle auf Aktiennachrichten angewendet werden, um auf Basis dieses Sentiment-Scores Entscheidungen über den Kauf oder Verkauf von Aktien zu treffen. Allerdings birgt die Fokussierung auf die Stimmung das Risiko, dass wesentliche Informationen für die Kursentwicklung unberücksichtigt bleiben, was zur Folge hat, dass die Prognosen nicht so präzise sind, wie sie sein könnten. In dem vorangegangenen Praxisprojekt, das die Grundlage dieser Bachelorarbeit bildet, wurde dieses Prinzip überarbeitet und erweitert. Dabei wurde ein Sprachmodell entwickelt, das nicht mehr lediglich den Sentiment-Score berechnet, sondern direkt eine Kursänderung zu einem festgelegten Zieldatum auf Basis von Nachrichtenartikeln prognostiziert. Die vorliegende Bachelorarbeit greift diesen Ansatz auf und untersucht, inwieweit Unternehmen, die anhand der Größe ihrer Marktkapitalisierung, Dividendenrendite und Nettogewinnmarge in Gruppen eingeteilt wurden, eine stärkere Abhängigkeit von Nachrichten aufweisen. Darüber hinaus wird analysiert, wie sich diese Abhängigkeit auf die Genauigkeit der Kursänderungsprognosen auswirkt und in welchem Maße sie die erzielte Rendite beeinflusst. Die Analyse und Bewertung zeigt für alle untersuchten Unternehmen positive Tendenzen. Hervorzuheben ist, dass kleinere Unternehmen mit niedrigen Kennzahlenwerten signifikant bessere Ergebnisse erzielen als größere Unternehmen mit höheren Kennzahlenwerten.In the field of large language models, there are methods for analyzing and evaluating human texts in the form of a sentiment score, which assesses the positive or negative sentiment of a text. In the financial sector, such models can be applied to stock news in order to make decisions about buying or selling stocks on the basis of this sentiment score. However, focusing on sentiment carries the risk that essential information for the price development is not taken into account, which means that the forecasts are not as precise as they could be. In the previous practical project, which forms the basis of this bachelor’s thesis, this principle was revised and expanded. A language model was developed that no longer simply calculates the sentiment score, but instead directly predicts a price change on a specified target date on the basis of news articles. This bachelor’s thesis takes up this approach and analyses the extent to which companies that have been divided into groups based on the size of their market capitalization, dividend yield and net profit margin are more dependent on news. Furthermore, the analysis examines how this dependence affects the accuracy of the price change forecasts and to what extent it influences the return achieved. The analysis and evaluation show positive trends across all companies. Notably, smaller companies with lower key figure values achieved significantly better outcomes than their larger counterparts
In-Memory-Databases: An In-Depth Dive Into SAP HANA
Full text linkIn the contemporary era, many organizations and companies are confronted with a signif-icant surge in data volumes. This has led to the challenge of capturing, storing, managing, and analyzing terabytes of data, which are stored in diverse formats and originate from numerous internal and external sources. Furthermore, the emergence of novel applica-tions, such as trading, and artificial intelligence, has made the processing of vast amounts of data in real time an absolute necessity. These requirements exceed the processing ca-pacity of traditional on-disk database management systems, which are ill-equipped to manage this data and to provide real-time results. Therefore, data management requires new solutions to cope with the challenges of data volumes and processing data in real time. An in-memory database system (IMDB- or IMD system) is a database management system that is emerging as a solution to these challenges, with the support of other tech-nologies. IMDBs are capable of processing massive data distinctly faster than traditional database management systems. This work examines the approach of IMDBs, with a par-ticular focus on SAP HANA, and compares it with other IMDBs
Taking Flight for Nature's Plight: Framing Sustainable Reforestation with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)
Full text linkThis thesis conducted a two-fold approach to develop a sustainable reforestation framework that integrates Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) that focuses on early tree establishment. The research was prompted by a project for mangrove reforestation in Pakistan which aimed to utilise UAVs as a medium. Prior to the project’s initiation, several questions have emerged in consideration to reforestation success. The thesis begins by conducting a desk study that reviews factors of mortality and success of reforestation. Coupled with the growing interest to integrate UAVs into environmental conservation and preservation, a field experiment was then conducted.
Based on this, a field experiment was created. It was designed to provide a baseline assessment on the drone’s first flight performance. Due to logistical issues, a field experiment was conducted in Germany instead of Pakistan, with similar physical characteristics of the site of reforestation. Main findings from this thesis includes: 1. Sowing depths from a higher altitude garnered more depths, 2. Most seeds were below 1cm of depth, 3. Published literature indicates that early tree establishment begins from a thorough examination of the environmental space, which includes the existing fauna as symbiotic relationships were essential to tree establishment, and 4. UAV-integrated research as main tools outside of monitoring were few.
These findings are then synthesized and integrated to create the Sustainable UAV-Integrated Reforestation Framework (SURF). The framework was designed to be holistic and dynamic, with emphasis on ecological factors – an element that is often made secondary in reforestation policies or projects. Yet, a couple of drawbacks can be observed as the thesis experiment was only brief and garnered a relatively small sample
Power Quality State Estimation for Distribution Grids Based on Physics-Aware Neural Networks—Harmonic State Estimation
Full text linkIn the transition from traditional electrical energy generation with mainly linear sources to increasing inverter-based distributed generation, electrical power systems’ power quality requires new monitoring methods. Integrating a high penetration of distributed generation, which is typically located in medium- or low-voltage grids, shifts the monitoring tasks from the transmission to distribution layers. Compared to high-voltage grids, distribution grids feature a higher level of complexity. Monitoring all relevant nodes is operationally infeasible and costly. State estimation methods provide knowledge about unmeasured locations by learning a physical system’s non-linear relationships. This article examines a new flexible, close-to-real-time concept of harmonic state estimation using synchronized measurements processed in a neural network. A physics-aware approach enhances a data-driven model, taking into account the structure of the electrical network. An OpenDSS simulation generates data for model training and validation. Different load profiles for both training and testing were utilized to increase the variance in the data. The results of the presented concept demonstrate high accuracy compared to other methods for harmonic orders 1 to 20
Frescoes in the Church of St. Gabriel adjoining to the Monastery of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Zwierki: an attempt at systematics
No full textFrescoes in Orthodox churches are indispensable element that has accompanied the Orthodox for many years. The first iconographic representations appeared in the early centuries of Christianity. Over time, after the legalization of the religion, Byzantine iconography began to gradually develop. It was from these regions, thanks to the mission of Saints Cyril and Methodius, and ultimately after the baptism of Rus', that it reached the Slavic lands and today's Podlasie region. Near Białystok, there is the Monastery of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Zwierki, which is one of the relatively young monastic communities in Poland. This place serves as a pilgrimage destination as well as a sanctuary for the relics of St. Martyr Gabriel of Zabłudów. The main church of the monastery, dedicated to the local saint, has a unique and incredibly rich iconographic scheme of frescoes. These frescoes refer to the life of the saint and depict many contemporary saints, as well as scenes from the life of the Patroness of the monastery. The style itself refers to the old-Russian style, allowing us to feel the spirit of ancient temples. This work describes and systematizes the frescoes of the temple in detail to deepen their understanding and examination, as well as to catalog them for future use in scientific research.Freski w prawosławnej świątyni to nieodzowny element towarzyszący prawosławnym od wielu lat. Pierwsze przedstawienia ikonograficzne pojawiły się już w pierwszych wiekach chrześcijaństwa. Z czasem, po legalizacji religii, ikonograficzne malarstwo bizantyjskie zaczęło się stopniowo rozwijać i to właśnie z tych terenów dzięki misji św. Cyryla i Metodego, a ostatecznie po chrzcie Rusi, dotarło na ziemie słowiańskie i dzisiejszego Podlasia. Niedaleko Białegostoku znajduje się klasztor Narodzenia Najświętszej Marii Panny w Zwierkach, który jest jedną z stosunkowo młodych wspólnot zakonnych w Polsce. Miejsce te stanowi centrum pielgrzymkowe jak i sanktuarium dla relikwii św. męcz. Gabriela Zabłudowskiego. Główna cerkiew klasztoru, pod wezwaniem lokalnego świętego, posiada unikalny i niezwykle bogaty schemat ikonograficzny fresków, które m. in. nawiązują do życia świętego, a także przedstawia wielu współczesnych świętych, a także sceny z życia Patronki klasztoru. Sama stylistyka nawiązuje do stylu staro-ruskiego, przez co możemy poczuć ducha starodawnych świątyń.
