ETHICS OF POLITICAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP DURING THE COVID-19 OUTBREAK IN RURAL INDONESIAN VILLAGES

This study explores the political entrepreneurship ethics of village heads in setting village development policies and the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study applies a qualitative methodology and observational analysis method with the interview as the main data-gathering technique, discovering musyawarah (deliberation), obedience to regulation, transparency and participation, empathy, priority scale, and Islamic teachings as the principles held by village heads in policy-making. The village heads also draw on musyawarah, obey regulations, and transparency and inclusiveness to avoid conflicts of interest in making policies. Meanwhile, the justification for policy-making is based on regulation and musyawarah. The results of the analysis demonstrate the convergence of political entrepreneurship ethics, namely, adherence to rules and musyawarah, in setting village development policies. They are inseparable from the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings of exploring principles, efforts, and ethical justification of policy-making help to understand the political entrepreneurial actions, which have been left unexplained in the analytical framework of political entrepreneurship as an independent variable. Finally, the context of the pandemic needs to be understood in relation to changes in the policy process. The outbreak can amend the ethical meaning of obeying regulations and musyawarah in setting the village development policies that are implemented by political entrepreneurs. This implies that a pandemic can be considered for its contribution to shaping the ethics of political entrepreneurship

This study investigates student activism in post-authoritarian Indonesia, focusing on the interplay between higher education reform, movement dynamics, and evolving political narratives over the past decade. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, we surveyed 497 undergraduates from social and political science faculties at 26 Indonesian universities and supplemented our analysis with a document review of student movements from 1999 to 2021. The study examines the transformation of Indonesia’s higher education system, the defining characteristics of contemporary student activism, and the predominant socio-political issues driving post-authoritarian student movements. Our findings show that student activism primarily occurs through various platforms, including social media, organizational participation, public discourse, and street demonstrations. Strategic alliances between campus-based groups and external civil society actors have become increasingly important in facilitating these movements. These movements have increasingly focused on issues such as justice, civil liberties, and welfare, while the rise of anti-oligarchy sentiments highlights ongoing dissatisfaction with the unfinished process of democratic consolidation. The analysis further uncovers a shift in political narratives, reflecting the changing priorities of the student movement in response to Indonesia’s political evolution. This study offers valuable insights into the role of student activism in shaping the state’s post-authoritarian trajectory, contributing to the broader understanding of the youth movement in contemporary Indonesia

This research explores the phenomenon of empty boxes and millennial participation in the 2024 Lampung Provincial Election. It highlights the constitutional concern of single-candidate elections, where a win means no competition, but an empty box win results in a government-appointed leader. This issue follows the Constitutional Court Decision Number 60/2024, which eased candidacy requirements. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data was gathered through interviews and FGDs. The findings show that millennials dominated the 2024 Lampung voter list, making up 55% or 3,641,169 of 6,515,869 total voters. In Lampung Barat, Parosil Mabsus-Mad Hasnurin, the only pair running against an empty box, won 87.79% of the vote. At the provincial level, Rahmat Mirzani Djausal and Jihan Nurlela were declared Governor and Deputy Governor for 2025-2029.The study recommends raising public awareness that voting for an empty box is a valid option under election law, allowing voters to voice dissatisfaction with a single candidate. This supports a more democratic process, ensuring elected leaders are accountable to the people

Less than 25% of seats in Indonesia’s House of Representatives are held by women politicians. While studies have explored the topic of women in Indonesian politics, this article adopts a unique approach by examining the use of social media as a political marketing tool by women politicians in Indonesia during the 2024 pre-presidential election period. Key questions include how women politicians are portrayed on social media, how they portray themselves, and how Indonesian youths perceive them. Possible mismatches between portrayals are also considered. This study specifically analyzes and maps the characteristics of social media posts from 36 women politicians across their platforms. With the growing involvement of young people in the political arena, understanding younger generations’ views on women politicians is crucial for comprehending social media’s impact on Indonesia’s democratic system. The findings contribute to the understanding of young people’s interest in politics, particularly concerning women in politics, and offer insights into the potential influence of social media on future elections in Indonesia

This study examines power relations in the context of literacy improvement in East Java Province. In addition to the persistent stagnation in TGM and IPLM scores, the Library and Archive Office (Dispusip) of East Java Province also faces unequal access to and varying quality of library services, which are crucial in improving literacy levels in East Java. These challenges are deeply intertwined with power relations, where leaders wield dominant influence over decision-making processes and policy implementation. This study employed a combination of descriptive and literature review methods, with data analysis conducted through a qualitative approach. It uncovered various factors and implications related to power relations within the Library and Archive Office (Dispusip) of East Java, particularly the hierarchical power structures and centralization. In this context, the Secretary of the Library Office (Sekdis) played a dominant role in shaping decision-making processes. The outcomes of centralized power encompassed power imbalances and internal conflicts within the Dispusip, including a noteworthy observation that numerous librarians launched programs without seeking approval from their leaders. Furthermore, the study highlights the librarians’ challenges in adapting to evolving demands, primarily stemming from limited human resource capabilities, which consequently lead to a decline in their performance. In response to these intricate challenges, this study underscores the importance of promoting open dialogues through participatory forums, implementing the principles of good governance, and empowering individuals by enhancing their skills and knowledge base

CLIENTELISM AND THE EROSION OF LEGISLATIVE OVERSIGHT: EXAMINING THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVE (DEWAN PERWAKILAN RAKYAT, DPR) ROLE UNDER PRESIDENT JOKO WIDODO (2014–2024)

This article investigates the weakening of legislative oversight by The House of (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat, DPR) during President Joko Widodo’s tenure from 2014 to 2024. Despite the expanded constitutional authority granted to the DPR following the 1998 political reforms, the quality of oversight function has diminished markedly in the Jokowi era. Drawing on theoretical and empirical literature, the article argues that this erosion is not solely the result of institutional shortcomings or inadequate reform, but is primarily driven by pervasive clientelistic relationships between the president and party elites. Such clientelism entrenches political patronage, enabling the executive to exert significant influence over legislative behavior and undermining the DPR’s independence. This study uses a qualitative, interpretivist approach, employing in-depth interviews, observation, and literature review within real social contexts. This study aims to provide a critical assessment of how clientelism has reshaped the balance of power between executive and legislature

RESILIENCE AS RESISTANCE: POLITICAL DISCOURSES OF CLIMATE ADAPTATION AMONG SMALLHOLDER COFFEE FARMERS IN FOREST CONFLICT ZONES OF CENTRAL ACEH INDONESIA

Climate change has exerted significant social, economic, and environmental pressures on small-scale coffee farmers, particularly those living near protected forest areas. Declining yields, land limitations, and restrictive conservation policies have created complex tensions related to resource access and survival strategies. This study aims to analyze the political discourses embedded in the dynamics of land rights disputes and climate adaptation strategies of small-scale coffee farmers. Using a qualitative approach and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the study explores how farmers negotiate, reject, and reinterpret state environmental regulations through everyday practices and narratives. This study’s findings reveal that coffee farmers’ adaptation strategies are not merely technical responses to climate change, but also reflect resistance to dominant power structures. This process includes contesting land authority, territorializing space within the conservation framework, and recognizing the often marginalized identities of farmers. The conclusion of this research shows that the resilience of coffee farmers can be understood as a form of resistance, reflecting negotiations and opposition to dominant discourses, as well as their efforts to reclaim their living spaces increasingly threatened by exclusive conservation policies
