Association of Czech Film Festivals: Three Years Later
Asociace vznikla s cílem koordinovaného řešení problémů, kterým filmové festivaly čelí, avšak za tři roky svého fungování veřejně nepublikovala žádné výsledky své práce a zdánlivě nevykonává činnost. This bachelor's thesis focuses on the Association of Czech Film Festivals (ACFF) and its functioning from its foundation in 2021 to 2024. It focuses on the reasons for its establishment,
the work it has done so far and its future. The association was created with the aim of providing a coordinated solution to the problems faced by film festivals, but in the three years of its
operation it has not publicly published any results of its work and has seemingly been inactive. The first part of the thesis focuses on the environment of Czech film festivals and the
importance of associations operating in the local film industry. The research used the method of semi-structured interviews with representatives of film festivals belonging to the ACFF, the
results of which I present in the second part. The aim of the work was to test the hypothesis that the association is not active and to find out the reasons for this situation. This hypothesis was proven to be wrong. Through the interviews I mapped the activities carried out by the association, its possible future and the current problems of film festivals as perceived by their representatives
Production in the Video Game Industry: The Role of the Producer and Their Influence on the Creative Development of Independent (Indie) and AAA Video Games
The thesis deals with production roles in the video game industry. Questioning whether the position of a producer is merely an "executive" role that connects members of various teams during development, or whether the producer has the ability to positively influence the creative aspect of the game, thereby achieving better outcomes in both critical reception and sales. Can we find similarities between the work of a film producer and a video game producer? How do their responsibilities and final goals differ?
The first part describes the methodology chosen to gather relevant information needed to write the thesis. The main component of it were interviews conducted with professionals from the video game industry.
The second part examines the role of the producer in general. What is their role in the various stages of video game production, from preproduction to the distribution of games? This is followed by a section that defines key terms related to video game development and the producer's role. Another part of the text focuses on the technical procedures and processes
applied both in teams typical for AAA video game development and the practices prevalent in smaller studios focusing on indies.
Lastly, a comprehensive reflection on the role of the producer is presented, along with the question of whether this position is necessary and beneficial for development. Is the role of the
producer purely practical, relating exclusively to issues such as work organization and financing, or can the producer positively influence the creative development of a video game?
Additionally, it explores the operating models of mainstream and indie studios aiming to find commonalities that ensure the smoothest video game development.
The outcome of the thesis should be a more precise definition of the role of a video game producer, their contributions, and their responsibilities towards the development team
The Phenomenon of Silence
This work reflects the previous musical history of its author, Simona Suchanová. Through the narration of the past, the author explores her possibilities of future direction. The work also serves as a preparation for her final performance at the Department of Authorial Acting at DAMU. In this way, she gives the reader a glimpse into her earlier life and invites them to make a pilgrimage to the stage, in front of the audience
The thesis is a study of intertextual relations between Jim Jarmusch’ films and other works of cinema and literature. The aim of the thesis is to analyze referential and typological intertextuality in two of Jarmusch’s movies, Only lovers left alive (2013) and Paterson (2016), by exploring direct and indirect connections to other texts. Jarmusch’s films are very dense with intertextuality, including allusions, quotations, calque and parody of genre clichés, which is done intentionally in order to influence and enrich an audience's interpretation of the ideas expressed in his films. I argue that exploring intertextuality in Jarmusch’s movies can contribute to better understanding of his messages to audience, especially his social commentaries, expressed in deep layers of the films.
Sound Aesthetics in the Work of P. T. Anderson
The aim of this work was to capture a specific expression through which Paul Thomas Anderson conveys himself using the approach to the sound track in conjunction with other narrative elements. For the investigation of the sound track in Anderson's films, I chose a method involving the development of three case studies examining his work with sound across a spectrum of genres and historical authorial evolution. These case studies yielded common points of Anderson's cinematic expression through sound, as well as its variations dependent on the nature of the world that Anderson constructs in these films. I interpreted the specifics of Anderson's approach to the sound track within the context of the narrated stories and other expressive means of his film language, with the aim of capturing the narrative, aesthetic, or emotional essence that he strives to express in those particular films. In conclusion, a depiction of Paul Thomas Anderson emerges as an author who, through his approach to the sound track, solidifies his position within the realm of contemporary authors of American Indiewood cinema movement
Deliberate Unintelligibility of the Spoken Word As an Expressive Element in a Feature Film
Diplomová práce analyzuje neobvyklý výrazový prostředek filmové a zároveň zvukové dramaturgie - záměrnou nesrozumitelnost mluveného slova. Nesrozumitelnost řeči je v rámci práce zařazena do širšího kontextu jazyka a hlasu, výrazových prostředků jiných druhů umění a samotného filmového díla. V závěru zprostředkovává i současné pojímání prostředku z pohledu zvukařského a režijního. The thesis analyses an unusual means of expression in film and sound dramaturgy - the deliberate incomprehensibility of the spoken word. Within the framework of the topic, it highlights those moments in film narration in which characters express themselves in a different way than through the meaning of words. In these moments, the spoken word is partially or completely unintelligible, even completely unheard, silent, without sound. The unintelligibility of speech is placed within the broader context of language and voice, the means of expression of other art forms, and the film work itself. Particular attention is paid in the thesis to the ways in which speech is relativized, which are examined from several perspectives. The chapter focusing on the historical context of intelligibility and deliberate unintelligibility of the spoken word is also substantial, and is primarily concerned with mapping important milestones related to this concept within the twentieth century. It concludes by mediating contemporary conceptions of the medium from a sound engineering and directing perspective. The results of the research contribute to resolving the discrepancy between the frequent use of the investigated expressive device and its absent theoretical reflection. The contribution of the thesis lies in the discovery of the potential of this specific expressive element
Sound Design of Eraserhead and PI from Perspective of Anxiety as a Philosophical Concept
This thesis attempts to use the philosophical and psychoanalytical concept of anxiety and apply it to the area of sound design of the film works Eraserhead and Pi. Anxiety, presented by the authors I have chosen, is the key to the search for authenticity, and authenticity is also sought by many artistic and film works and their authors. The work does not aim to understand anxiety or film works in their comprehensiveness, but it tries to create an interesting interpretation by combining those two fields. It also looks for places where the sound disconnects from picture and extends "further than the image". Subsequently, it attempts to generalize the sound-dramaturgical devices that cause such anxiety, being fully aware of how much it cannot step out of the context of its own research. What may be a dramaturgical rule in one work may work quite the opposite in another
Theatre Piece Created with Children: Questions of Building a Dramaturgical and Directorial Concept
The presented dissertation thesis deals with the creation of dramaturgical and di-rectorial concept in theatre created with children. The aim of the thesis is to answer what questions contemporary creators of children's theatre ask themselves when creating a concept in practice. The thesis gives the reader an insight into the think-ing of the creators when developing the concept. It also addresses the educators’ questions about the more general principles of their work.
The thesis is divided into two parts. The first one, the theoretical part, serves to de-fine the dramaturgical-directorial concept in the specific context of theatre created with children. This part introduces the specific areas of interest involved in the de-velopment of a dramaturgical-directorial concept. The second part, empirical one, is devoted to the analysis of in-depth semi-structured interviews and open-ended questionnaires with ten well known creators of children's theatre. For the analysis, the technique of "laying out the cards" (as described by Švaříček and Šeďová) was used. This technique was the basis for the creation of seven chapters correspond-ing to the seven most important questions mentioned by the respondents: Why? With whom? Who? About what? How? When? For whom?
The practical output of the thesis is a list of specific questions that contemporary children's theatre makers ask themselves when developing a dramaturgical and directorial concept. This list can be used by other theatre makers as inspiration and tool
Creation of a pruduction based on the book by Frank Tashlin
This thesis is my attempt to capture the yearly process that took place with group of pubescent children in Leisure center Radovánek in Pilsen. The aim of this thesis is to describe the process of creating a production based on one of the books by Frank Tashlin. Specifically, the book The Bear that wasn't. In my thesis I'm describing the group composition and its subsequent functioning within the process of working with a book template and topics that the book offers us
Five directions by Jan Mikulášek
Každá z inscenací vychází z jiného textového materiálu: Gottland z reportáží, Korespondence V+W z dopisů, Zlatá šedesátá z deníkových zápisů, Maryša z dramatu a Don Quijote z románu. Zároveň v rámci všech vybraných děl režisér nějakým způsobem vstupuje do dialogu s mýtem ohledně daného tématu nebo osobností (češství, Jan Werich a Jiří Voskovec, Pavel Juráček, šedesátá léta, Maryša, donkichotství). Práce tak volně navazuje na předchozí bakalářskou práci Persony: inspirace filmy Ingmara Bergmana v inscenaci Divadla Na zábradlí, kde režisér vychází opět z jiného materiálu, a sice filmů, resp. filmových povídek švédského režiséra.In my thesis, based on the analysis of five productions by Jan Mikulášek, I aim to name the constants and variables of the director’s treatment of different types of subjects. Each of the productions is based on different textual material: Gottland on reports, Correspondence V+W on letters, The Golden Sixties on diary entries, Marysha on drama and Don Quixote on a novel. At the same time, in all the selected works, the director enters in some way into a dialogue with the myth regarding the given theme or personalities (Czechism, Jan Werich and Jiří Voskovec, Pavel Juráček, the sixties, Marysha, Don Quixote). The thesis thus loosely follows the previous bachelor's thesis Personas: inspiration of Ingmar Bergman's film in the production of the Theatre on the Balustrade
