The Function of Witnesses in Athenian Law Courts. Akten der Gesellschaft für Griechische und Hellenistische Rechtsgeschichte|(28) Symposion 2019 Akten der Gesellschaft für griechische und hellenistische Rechtsgeschichte Band 28|

In this paper I challenge the view that the main function of Athenianwitnesses was to show support for the litigant for whom they were testifying. I arguethat (like today) witnesses were called to confirm facts in the case and there is noevidence that they only lent their support to the litigant. I also argue that witnesseswere not required to use “formulaic” expressions in their testimony

Past and Future of Human Capital in Southeast Asia: From 1970 to 2030

This paper examines levels of educational attainment in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines,Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam for the period 1970-2030 through the reconstruction andprojection of levels of educational attainment. While the study of the past shows that thedetermination to invest in education has been strong in the six countries, the investments wereimplemented at different pace and intensity, the projections show the legacy of pastinvestments. In Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, there will be tangible increases in theproportion of the working age population with a tertiary education. The Philippines will have adichotomous society where large proportions will either have a tertiary education or only aprimary education. In Indonesia, the bulk of the working age population will shift fromprimary in 2000 to secondary by 2030. The projection horizon and the trend type of scenariodo not allow Vietnam to catch up with the other countries

Graph Laplacian for image deblurring. ETNA - Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis

    No full text
Image deblurring is a relevant problem in many fields of science and engineering. To solve this problem, many different approaches have been proposed, and, among the various methods, variational ones are extremely popular. These approaches substitute the original problem with a minimization problem where the functional is composed of two terms, a data fidelity term and a regularization term. In this paper we propose, in the classical non-negative constrained 2\ell^2-1\ell^1 minimization framework, the use of the graph Laplacian as regularization operator. Firstly, we describe how to construct the graph Laplacian from the observed noisy and blurred image. Once the graph Laplacian has been built, we efficiently solve the proposed minimization problem by splitting the convolution operator and the graph Laplacian by the Alternating Direction Multiplier Method (ADMM). Some selected numerical examples show the good performances of the proposed algorithm

πτερόν, πτέρυξ, πτερύγιον. A Cultural-Historical Study of a Classical Greek Architectural Term and Derivatives, and their Post-Classical Meaning (pterón, ptéryx, pterúgion. πτερόν, πτέρυξ and πτερύγιον all stem from the same root, and their primary meaning is connected to birds: “feather”,“wing”, “shoulder blade”. The history of these words is worthy of note for they came into use in the description of Graeco-Egyptian temple complexes and in the nomenclature of Classical architecture. In order to observe the semantic import of theseand related words and expressions across various cultural contexts (Graeco-Egyptian, Classical and Byzantine) this articlepresents and discusses a range of ancient, late antique and Byzantine literary, erudite, archaeological and iconographic sources. This study aims at giving the reader a glimpse into the Greek lexical domain of architecture, by providing insights into some ofthe general mechanisms of its construction, and specifically to illuminate, by way of a cultural-historical investigation of theseterms, ideas of appearance and significance inherent in the Graeco-Egyptian and Classical and Byzantine worlds. This surveysuggests lexical forms as a key research domain for the understanding of the intellectual, social and cultural life of societies
