The Reproductive Value in Distributed Optimal Control Models
No full textWe show that in a large class of distributed optimal control models (DOCM), wherepopulation is described by a McKendrick type equation with an endogenous number ofnewborns, the reproductive value of Fisher shows up as part of the shadow price of thepopulation. Depending on the objective function, the reproductive value may be negative.Moreover, we show results of the reproductive value for changing vital rates. To motivateand demonstrate the general framework, we provide examples in health economics,epidemiology, and population biology

No full textReduced-order modeling has a long tradition in computational fluid dynamics. The ever-increasing significance of data for the synthesis of low-order models is well reflected in the recent successes of data-driven approaches such as Dynamic Mode Decomposition and Operator Inference. With this work, we discuss an approach to learning structured low-order models for incompressible flow from data that can be used for engineering studies such as control, optimization, and simulation. To that end, we utilize the intrinsic structure of the Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible flows and show that learning dynamics of the velocity and pressure can be decoupled, thus, leading to an efficient operator inference approach for learning the underlying dynamics of incompressible flows. Furthermore, we demonstrate the performance of the operator inference in learning low-order models using two benchmark problems and compare with an intrusive method, namely proper orthogonal decomposition, and other data-driven approaches

No full textIm vorliegenden Beitrag werden die wechselseitigen Beziehungen von demographischenVeränderungen und Arbeitsmarktentwicklungen anhand eines Literaturüberblicks diskutiert.Insbesondere werden die Effekte von demographischen Strukturen und Prozessen aufdie Lohnstruktur und auf die Arbeitslosigkeit präsentiert, wobei sowohl Mikro- als auchMakroansätze diskutiert und die Implikationen der Bevölkerungsalterung für den Arbeitsmarktbesprochen werden. In Mikroansätzen werden z.B. altersspezifische Profile der Humankapitalbildungals optimale Lösung eines individuellen Entscheidungsproblems modelliert.Im Gegensatz dazu werden in Makroansätzen die Beziehung von Makrovariablen,z.B. Jugendarbeitslosigkeit und Besetzungsstärke der eigenen Kohorte, modelliert. No full textChildlessness, a driving force of fertility, has undergone strong variations in 20th-centuryEurope, and educational attainment has been rising continuously. We analyse how thesetwo factors were related to each other over time. Our study is based on census and largescalesurvey data from 13 European countries, collected in the Cohort Fertility andEducation database. We compare the trends in the share of women childless at age 40+ inthe 1916–1965 birth cohorts, by level of education. The results suggest that the changes inthe educational composition of the population were only marginally related to the overallvariation in childlessness rates. With time, the positive educational gradient inchildlessness usually decreased: the differences between women of medium/high educationand low educated women diminished. However, the childlessness ratio between highly andmedium educated women remained stable in Western and Southern Europe and evenslightly increased in the East
