Design of an Experiment to Evaluate Modes of Value Generalization in Animated Choropleth Maps. GI_Forum|GI_Forum 2021, Volume 2|
In this research, we discuss five design parameters found in cognitive studies related to animated choropleth maps and compare existing studies accordingly. With reference to these parameters, we present the design of an experiment to assess how different forms of value generalization in choropleth map animation affect the perception of overall trends and local deviations therefrom. The mixed study design of the experiment allowed a direct comparison of within-subject and between-subject designs. Using repeated subsampling of our empirical data, the greater statistical power of the within-subject design was proven, even when correcting for differences in the number of data elements analysed
Nile Delta settlements during the Early Dynastic and Old Kingdom periods – their internal structure, variability, and evidence of “royal” influence. Ägypten und Levante|Ägypten und Levante XXXI 31|
The analyses of individual sites have made it possible to define the spatial structure of settlements and the degree of “royal” impact on the towns and villages of the Delta. Their shape was determined by the flow of local watercourses, and spatial systems were developed around one or more cores having their origins in the local topography. There were no walls surrounding entire settlements. Internal walls, however, often indicated the division of settlement areas into districts. Also, the uniform orientation of buildings within the cores cannot be regarded as evidence of centralized urban planning. Domestic and farm buildings were arranged on a rectangular plan that was agglutinating and fairly uniform. The elements that stood out against the background of low-rise buildings were mainly multi-storey and massive administrative or defensive structures, referred to in Egyptian sources as Hwt or swnw, usually located on local rivers and associated with production zones. These buildings were the seats of institutions that controlled local production and the flow of goods and people in the name of the king. Their presence is the most striking evidence of “royal” influence on settlements. Temples and cultic areas, on the other hand, were generally hidden in the center of settlement tissue or even within administrative buildings. It was only at the end of the Old Kingdom that temples were brought under royal patronage, becoming increasingly monumental and displaying the majesty of the king to the local populace
In 1926, the publicist Hugó Ignotus (1869–1949) and the sociologist Róbert Braun (1879–1937) debated in the Hungarian journal “Nyugat” the possible and desirable roles of referendums in the political system. This debate was unique because institutions of direct democracy were neither regulated nor practiced in Hungary at that time; not even in‐depth scientific or political discussions took place about the issue. Ignotus was of the opinion that referendums could – at least partly – take over the role of the parliament and be used as a controlling power against authoritarian leaders. He proposed to enable citizens to directly elect and dismiss the political leader and to lay down the guidelines for the government in referendums; the government should only elaborate and implement detailed regulations. Braun argued in his response that institutions of direct democracy cannot replace the representative power and that citizens should not be overburdened by too frequent referendums. Direct democracy may work as a corrective to the parliament but it is not suitable for preventing authoritarian tendencies. He also emphasized the importance of political maturity as a prerequisite for a convenient use of referendums and popular initiatives. Later developments justified Braun’s opinion. The article presents the standpoints of the discussion partners and places their views in the context of preceding and subsequent evolution

New Light on the Correspondence of Abimilki, King of Tyre. Ägypten und Levante|Ägypten und Levante XXXI 31|
This article discusses the chronological sequence of the eleven letters of the kings of Tyre (EA 146–155, 295) and the history of Tyre in the Amarna period, as it has emerged from the re-dating of the letters. The article also suggests that Abimilki was a Tyrian prince sent as a hostage to Egypt and, following the crisis of succession, chosen by Amenhotep III to sit on the Tyrian throne. The education and cultural background to which the king was exposed in his youth, in the Egyptian court, explains the unique characteristic of the Tyrian letters within the Amarna correspondence. The article also describes the history of Tyre from the later years of Amenhotep III to the later years of Akhenaten, and the contribution of the Tyrian letters to the history of the Coast of Lebanon in the Amarna period

Ersitzung im unkodifizierten ungarischen Privatrecht. Auswirkung des ABGB in Ungarn nach 1861. Beiträge zur Rechtsgeschichte Österreichs|Beiträge zur Rechtsgeschichte Österreichs Band 2 / 2020|
In the private law literature from the age of codification in Hungary, it was stated that the Austrian Civil Code lost its earlier role in the development of the Hungarian private law after the 1880s. The aim of this essay is to use usucaption as an example to prove that the break from the Austrian private law dogmatics was only an often emphasized decision of the Hungarian politicians and codificators; yet, a limited impact of the Austrian Civil Code could be found in the private law scholarship as well

For the distribution of competences between the federal state and the Länder, the Austrian constitution provides some quite distinctive constructions, some of which go back to the monarchy. The present article describes the various constellations
