Die Philostrat-Rezeption im philologischen und poetischen Werk des Angelo Poliziano. Wiener Studien|Wiener Studien 133 133|

    No full text
The following paper attempts a complete survey of the reception of the ancient Greek prose-writer Flavius Philostratus in the philological and poetical work of Angelo Poliziano. This comprises Poliziano’s early Italian poetry, his commentaries of the 1480’s, intended as aide-mémoires for his university lectures, his later Latin poetry (based on this philological work), and finally his dedicatory letter to Piero de’ Medici, which can be read as a renewed version of the treatise on epistolary style by Philostratus’ namesake, the so-called “Lemnian Philostratus.” The paper, therefore, shows in a detailed case-study how Poliziano fulfilled the Alexandrian ideal of combining philological erudition with poetical creativity. Not just major authors but also a less well-known writer such as Philostratus could contribute something to Poliziano’s encyclopaedic vision of the ancient world

The Latin Talmud and the Extension of Papal Jurisdiction over Jews. Medieval Worlds|Ideologies of Translation I - Volume 11. 2020|

    No full text
This paper addresses the question of how the Latin translation of the Talmud, known as the Extractiones de Talmud (1245), is related to the changing perception of the Jews and in particular to the reassessment of their legal status during the thirteenth century. It draws particular attention to Pope Gregory IX’s description of the Talmud as another law – an alia lex, as he called it – which challenged the traditional representation of the Jews as witnesses of the Christian truth, depicting them instead as heretics. This new perception of the Jews had far-reaching consequences for their legal status, for the popes used it to subject them to direct papal jurisdiction. To conclude, the question of whether the discovery of the Jewish »Oral Law« can be considered the cause of this new representation of the Jews in the strict sense is addressed. It is argued that it may, conversely, have been the intended representation of the Jews as heretics, who could thus be subsumed under papal jurisdiction, which was instrumental in bringing to light and decrying this body of rabbinic wisdom

The situation of children with disabilities who were placed in psychiatric institutions in Vienna during the second half of the 20th century has hardly been taken into account by historical research until now. A recent socio-historical study examines two Viennese institutions: Pavilion 15 of the Psychiatric Hospital “Am Steinhof” and the Ward for Children with developmental disabilities of the Neurological Hospital of the City of Vienna. The results provide new insights into the structures and practices of suchpsychiatric institutions. In this paper the focus lies on Pavilion 15. Four case studies of the lives of patients who were detained in Pavilion 15 from the post-WW II-era until the 1980s delineate the paths which led to the “Kinderpavillon” and expose its reigning system of negligence and violence. The reconstructions show how psychiatric patterns of interpretation and action, institutional relegation politics, organisational structuresas well as care cultures inscribe themselves into real biographies and withheld chances for personal development
