Gender and socioeconomic inequalities in health and wellbeing across age in France and Switzerland. Vienna Yearbook of Population Research|Vienna Yearbook of Population Research 2021|

    No full text
There is increasing evidence that wellbeing is unequally distributed across sociodemographicgroups in contemporary societies. However, less is known about thedivergence across social groups of trajectories of wellbeing across age groups. This issue is of great relevance in contexts characterised by changing populationstructures and growing imbalances across and within generations, and in whichensuring that everyone has the opportunity to have a happy and healthy life courseis a primary welfare goal. In this study, we investigate wellbeing trends in Franceand Switzerland across age, gender, and socioeconomic status groups. We use twohousehold surveys (the Sant´e et Itin´eraires Professionnels and the Swiss HouseholdPanel) to compare the unfolding inequalities in health and wellbeing across agegroups in two rich countries. We view wellbeing as multidimensional, followingthe literature highlighting the importance of considering different dimensions andmeasures of wellbeing. Thus, we investigate a number of outcomes, includingdifferent measures of physical and mental health, as well as of relational wellbeing, using a linear regression model and a linear probability model. Our findings showinteresting country and dimension-specific heterogeneities in the development ofhealth and wellbeing over age. While our results indicate that there are gender andeducational inequalities in both Switzerland and France, and that gender inequalitiesin mental health accumulate with age in both countries, we also find that educationalinequalities in health and wellbeing remain rather stable across age groups

Faunal Remains from the Bronze Age Settlement at Punta di Zambrone (Calabria, Italy). Orea|Punta di Zambrone I Oriental and European Archaeology Volume 17|

    No full text
Excavations at the Bronze Age site of Punta di Zambrone yielded faunal remains from two habitational phases of the settlement, comprising two small samples from the Early Bronze Age 2 (EBA 2, NISP=114) and the Recent Bronze Age 2 (RBA 2, NISP=137) layers of Area B and a large assemblage from massive ashy filling layers of Area C (RBA 2, NISP=3439). Additionally, a very small sample (NISP=63) came from earlier horizons of Area C, possibly representing the early Recent or even Middle Bronze Age. All three small samples show very similar patterns of species composition, characterised by the distinct predominance of bovine remains and balanced ratios of pigs and ovicaprines. The large RBA 2 sample from Area C differs strongly from the other assemblages, mainly in terms of livestock representation which shows balanced ratios of all main domestic species and a remarkably high percentage of canine bones which, additionally, show frequent traces of butchering. These features resemble closely patterns of husbandry from other Calabrian sites, in particular MBA Broglio di Trebisacce, however, the deposition of faunal remains, comprising also meaningful objects like bucrania or eagle bones, in a series of ashy layers might also indicate ritually motivated forms of consumption that may not necessarily reflect the regular livestock economy of the settlement

Is educational wellbeing associated with grade repetition and school dropout rates among Indian students? Evidence from a panel study. Vienna Yearbook of Population Research|Vienna Yearbook of Population Research 2021|

    No full text
Despite the Indian government’s continuing efforts to encourage children to attend school, levels of educational wellbeing among some groups of children during their elementary schooling remain low. High school dropout and grade repetition rates are among the negative and deleterious outcomes of poor educational wellbeing in children that are rarely discussed as policy issues. Using the panel dataset of the India Human Development Survey (IHDS) conducted in 2005 and 2012, this study explores the effects of educational wellbeing on children’s later educational outcomes, as measured by their school dropout and grade repetition rates. Variation in the educational outcomes of children across states was also examined. The results show that the children whose educational wellbeing index was below average during their elementary schooling were more likely to drop out of school or repeat a grade in early adolescence. For policymakers, this study highlights that the experiences of children during their elementary schooling merit more attention

Rising Dispersion in Age at First Birth in Europe: Is it related to Fertility Postponement?

    No full text
This paper examines the dispersion of fertility across age and time which has rarely beenstudied. Using data from the Human Fertility Database, we examine fertility age schedulesby looking at standard deviations in age at first births in European countries at differentstages of fertility postponement. The standard deviation at first birth remained overallconstant during the start of fertility postponement in the early 1970s, then it increasedduring the second stage marking the progression of postponement. It remained againconstant at a higher level during recent years. The paper discusses the structural changesthat might have caused these changes

Mapping Nitrogen from Satellite Data to Improve Soil Quality - A Worked Example. GI_Forum|GI_Forum 2021, Volume 1|

    No full text
Soils are complex ecosystems. They play a key role in providing sustainable life on Earth, meeting the needs of humans and regulating several environmental processes. The United Nation’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the related 17 Goals include a commitment to the preservation of soil quality. However, the adopted indicators lack the measurement of a key nutrient: nitrogen. The aim of this paper is to call for the integration of two nitrogen indexes to measure soil quality and to present a worked example of geospatial technologies applied to nitrogen monitoring, aiding in farmland management and decision-making. Due to their inherent time/location precision, remote sensing data can provide insight in predicting the impact of agricultural practices and optimise their application
