With the emergence of AIDS in the mid-1980s, both media and politics were quick to offer a public discourse, that caused a tangible sense of threat within wide sections of the population. Moreover, it called into question the sexual liberation of the 1960s and 1970s. This article seeks to build on the aforementioned discourse as a basis to further examine the extent to which the emergence of AIDS actually affected the sexual morality of the citizens of the Federal Republic of Germany. Petitions prove to be a prolific source for this purpose. Within the multifaceted argumentations of some citizens, homosexuality has often been construed and criticised as a logical consequence of the sexual liberation movement. Upon further analysis, however, it becomes clear that even though a return to more conservative values with regard to sexuality certainly occurred, the potential threat of becoming infected with HIV also spurred on a countermovement that advocated and normalised an open and public conversation about sexuality

Between 1949 and 1987 163 South Tyrolean children and adolescents were referred to the psychiatric children’s observation-ward in Innsbruck for further examination, observation and treatment. The majority of these children came from socially non-privileged German-speaking families, many of whom had spent their years previous to admission in foster families or in institutional care. Especially during the 1970s, public welfare authorities in South Tyrol made use of the possibility of referring their “problem children” to the foreign clinical institution,a practice existing since 1955. In many cases this referral was also connected to furtheradmission to Austrian care-institutions. The Innsbruck children’s observation-ward therefore became an important place of medical treatment and estimation for South Tyrolean children with mental handicaps, behavioural disorders or school problems. This paper deals with the phenomenon of delegating care-work, which bears analogy to the treatment and admission practice in the field of general psychiatry. The paper is based on mental records from thechildren’s observation-ward and contemporary sources by the South Tyrolean State Administration found in the South Tyrolean State Archive

After the end of the Nazi-barbarism, Hubert Urban (1904–1997) showed initiative and actively tried to reorganize psychiatry by following pioneering impulses for the development of apsychosocial treatment that gives consideration to the entire human being. His visions of the future of psychiatry and neurology influenced a whole generation of psychiatrists and neurologists far beyond the borders of Tyrol. Several of his members of staff achieved international recognition. Due to his personality structure respectively his display of behavioural disorders, his innovations were not permanently accepted. The suspension of Prof Urban in 1958 ended a period in psychiatric history that was characterised not only by pioneer spirit but also by various problems

Since ancient times, a healthy diet was seen as the basis of a long life. Opinions on what constituted a healthy diet differed. The years around 1900 were characterised by anxiety and a desire for a healthier life style outside the cities. During this time, many private and a few public sanatoria for the neurotic as well as for the consumptive opened their doors for the first time. In the country houses, healthy meals stood at the center of a wholesome regimen. Both physicians and lay-managers of these sanatoria made “correct nutrition” to the fundamental part of the cure. Some healers referred to the new sciences (physiology, biology and chemistry), while other entrepreneurs made more use of their own life experience or their (religious) philosophy and the idea of a “natural” medicine as an argument. Sanatoriums often created their ownspecial dishes for their guests. Examples are the “Birchermüesli” (Dr. Bircher-Benner) inZurich or the “Cornflakes” (Dr. Kellogg) in Battle Creek, USA. Special industries now produced healthy food to sell all over the world. To help patients to continue the cure at home by preparing the sanatoria’s dishes, some (mainly female) cooks published their recipes. Many cookery books were highly published and made the sanatoria well known. In this article we will study some of these cookery books
