Chrysobulls issued »in common« to the inhabitants of cities, together with a large number of other surviving sources, shed light on the interplay in the Byzantine Empire during the long thirteenth century between, on the one hand, growing claims to civic autonomy advanced by communes and, on the other, efforts by imperial authority to control its territory. This chapter examines the emergence of a new kind of empire – based on commerce and trade – under the Palaiologoi. It analyses the changing circumstances of urban centres in the western provinces, and assesses the degree of fiscal, legal and political emancipation that these centres achieved. It discusses the creation of leagues and other types of alliances that successfully bound cities and towns together into regional associations. It also considers the mechanisms behind revolts and other forms of armed and unarmed protest that occurred against the central regime. Particular attention is paid to the region of northern Greece (Thrace and Macedonia) dominated by the city of Thessalonike, for which the evidence is most plentiful

This paper proposes moicheia (seduction) as an instance of the unity ofancient Greek law. Part I examines the sources that state or imply such unity. Part IIanalyzes the treatment of moicheia in specific sources and places. Part III concludesthat the most compelling evidence for unity lies in the detention for ransom of theseducer caught in the act and in the humiliation of the seducer and/or his paramour

This historic-topographical study discusses aspects of the spatial relationships of some monuments and monasterieswithin the urban fabric of Constantinople. An attempt is made to determine their locations more precisely based on an examinationof the written sources. In particular, the recently published critical edition of the Kniga Palomnik of Antonij of Novgorodprovides new topographical information and hagiographic insights. Former errors of the author and some mistakes in currentresearch may be corrected in this way

A marble allotment machine (kleroterion) recently discovered in Athens(inv.no. ΠΛ 2176) is here published for the first time. This is the fourth example of akleroterion inscribed with the name of the Treasurer of the prytaneia Habron, son ofKallias, of the deme Bate. The office seems to have been a creation of the 2ndcentury B.C. After revisiting the extant kleroteria, I propose to lower their date tothe 160s

    Agglomeration Processes in Ageing Societies

    No full text
This article investigates agglomeration processes in ageing societies by introducing anoverlapping generation structure into a New Economic Geography model. Whether highereconomic integration leads to spatial concentration of economic activity crucially hinges onthe economies' demographic properties. While population aging as represented by decliningbirth rates strengthens agglomeration processes, declining mortality rates weaken them. This isdue to the fact that we allow for nonconstant population size. In particular, we show thatpopulation growth acts as an important dispersion force that augments the distributionaleffects on agglomeration processes resulting from the turnover of generations.JEL classification: R12, J10, F15, C6

Does Fertility Decrease the Welfare of Households? An Analysis of Poverty Dynamics and Fertility in Indonesia

    No full text
It is generally accepted that lower population growth is associated with positive economicdevelopment. Although there is a large body of literature supporting this hypothesis at themacro level, few studies have analyzed the causal e®ect of fertility on household welfare atthe micro level. In this paper we present an empirical analysis of the relationship betweenhousehold welfare and fertility for Indonesia - a country which has experienced unprecedentedeconomic growth and sharp fertility declines over recent decades. The focus of our paper istwofold: First, we introduce and apply propensity score matching methods to study the rela-tionship between fertility outcomes and economic variables at the household level. Secondly,we explicitly test for the sensitivity of our results with respect to alternative measures of wel-fare at the household level. When consumption expenditure per person is used as a measureof welfare, the analysis suggests that the correlation between fertility and household welfare issensitive to the choice of the parameters governing economics of scale and equivalence scalesat the household level. The lower these values are the less likely will an additional childdepress household welfare. On the other hand, when the share of food in total expenditureis used as a measure of welfare, the result does not produce a decisive sign of the correlationbetween fertility and household welfare
