Transformative Lernangebote kritisch-reflexiv gestalten. Fachdidaktische Orientierungen einer emanzipatorischen BNE. GW-Unterricht|GW-Unterricht 162|

    No full text

Energy from Biomass: Assessing Sustainability by Geoinformation Technology. GI_Forum|GI_Forum 2021, Volume 1|

    No full text
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 7.2 requests a substantial increase in the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix by 2030. Renewable energy production in all sectors has to be evaluated for its contribution to reach this target. Biomass for energy production has gained a bad reputation over the past years due to the “food versus fuel” debate or reported unsustainable practices. The BIOPLAT-EU project is employing geoinformation technologies combined with sustainability and economic expertise to more accurately evaluate the sustainability of bioenergy value chains. The project has three main parts: first, the generation of a pan-European map of marginal, underutilized, and contaminated (MUC) lands potentially usable for bioenergy production. This is realized by employing remote sensing time series, existing Copernicus, and other spatial data sets. Second, the generation of a web-based geographical information system (GIS) connecting the MUC lands with other important information sources necessary to assess sustainability. Thisrd, the sustainability assessment includes not only typical social and environmental sustainability indicators like soil, water, or greenhouse gas emissions, but also economic sustainability indicators like employment. Current financial barriers are addressed by integrating innovative financing solutions considering SDG target 12.A

An indirect method to monitor the fraction of people ever infected with COVID-19: An application to the United States

    No full text
The number of COVID-19 infections is key for accurately monitoring the pandemics. However, due to differential testing policies, asymptomatic individuals and limited large-scale testing availability, it is challenging to detect all cases. Seroprevalence studies aim to address this gap by retrospectively assessing the number of infections, but they can be expensive and time-intensive, limiting their use to specific population subgroups. In this paper, we propose a complementary approach that combines estimated (1) infection fatality rates (IFR) using a Bayesian melding SEIR model with (2) reported case-fatality rates (CFR) in order to indirectly estimate the fraction of people ever infected (from the total population) and detected (from the ever infected). We apply the technique to the U.S. due to their remarkable regional diversity and because they count with almost a quarter of all global confirmed cases and deaths. We obtain that the IFR varies from 1.25% (0.39–2.16%, 90% CI) in Florida, the most aged population, to 0.69% in Utah (0.21–1.30%, 90% CI), the youngest population. By September 8, 2020, we estimate that at least five states have already a fraction of people ever infected between 10% and 20% (New Jersey, New York, Massachussets, Connecticut, and District of Columbia). The state with the highest estimated fraction of people ever infected is New Jersey with 17.3% (10.0, 55.8, 90% CI). Moreover, our results indicate that with a probability of 90 percent the fraction of detected people among the ever infected since the beginning of the epidemic has been less than 50% in 15 out of the 20 states analyzed in this paper. Our approach can be a valuable tool that complements seroprevalence studies and indicates how efficient have testing policies been since the beginning of the outbreak

Assessment of the Data Quality in Demographic and Health Surveys in Egypt

    No full text
The aim of this paper is to check the quality of fertility data collected through Demographic and Health Surveys in Egypt between 1988 and 2014. We are particularly interested to assess whether fertility changes observed since 2000 that point at a stall in fertility decline followed by a substantial increase between 2008 and 2014 are real and not due to imperfect data. We show through several exercises that data quality has increased since the first Demographic and Health Survey in 1988 and that the data imperfections do not explain the fertility trajectories in Egypt

Note esegetiche a quattro passi di Ammiano Marcellino. Wiener Studien|Wiener Studien 134 134|

The year 2018 saw the Dutch scholars’ philological and historical commentary onAmmianus Marcellinus eventually reach Book XXXI. These volumes will remain a seminalreference work in the times to come. The best way to honour the outstanding achievement ofthe Dutch commentators is to keep on bringing Ammianean exegesis to further depth. Here weare going to read anew four passages of Ammianus (22,8,31 and 41; 27,5,6; 31,2) in order tosharpen our understanding of his methods and his perspective as a historian and a literaryauthor. Those passages concern 1) the tribes anachronistically living around Lake Maeotis, 2)the Sindi called meaningfully ignobiles and advisedly put in the wrong place of northern BlackSea, 3) the strange appearance of the ethnonym Greuthungi (exonym of the Eastern Goths),instead of the right one Tervingi (exonym of the Lower Danube Goths), in the first Gothic warof Valens, 4) the ethnographic digression on Alans and Huns as well as its substantial veracity
