    Identitätskonstruktion von Jugendlichen. GW-Unterricht|GW-Unterricht 161|

    No full text

The Socio-Spatial Aspect of Rurality – A Case Study of Rural Settlements in Central Serbia. Mitteilungen der Österreichischen Geographischen Gesellschaft|Mitteilungen der Österreichischen Geographischen Gesellschaft - Band 162<br/>(Annals of the Austrian Geographical Society - Volume 162)|

Contemporary rural areas have been significantly changed. Thus, previous rural typologies are no longer valid and there is a need for developing and standardising new measures of rurality. We developed a set of 23 rural indicators which were tested on data on the characteristics of rural areas in contemporary Serbian society. Based on statistical analyses, four variables were excluded and three main rural attributes were confirmed (population change, economic dependency ratio, population density in the built-up area). The reduced set of 19 variables could be a relevant platform for establishing a rural typology in Central Serbia, but also for conducting precise analyses of the transformation of rural areas in similar post-socialist societies

Peripheral Metropolises in Southeast Europe. An Introduction. Mitteilungen der Österreichischen Geographischen Gesellschaft|Mitteilungen der Österreichischen Geographischen Gesellschaft - Band 162<br/>(Annals of the Austrian Geographical Society - Volume 162)|

Among the European peripheries, Southeast Europe stands out as a specific periphery. In a historic view, it is rooted in a Byzantine and Ottoman past. Industrialisation and urbanisation arrived with considerable delay, to be intensified by varieties of Communist rule after World War II. Since 1989/1992, post-socialist transformation was accompanied by the break-up of Yugoslavia and several wars. After stabilisation, eight nation-states have applied for EU membership, and four have joined since. For the metropolises (and capital cities) of this region, integration into the European and global economy has increased their status as gateways for investment and traffic – tending to leave their own, the periphery’s periphery, behind. Large urban development projects are being planned and built in all metropolises of Southeast Europe, as symbols of new nation-states and anchors for investment capital. In the name of national priorities and technocratic necessities, special legislation tends to by-pass local powers. All these topics are analysed in the five articles on “Peripheral Metropolises – Urban Dynamics in Southeast Europe” that follow, to which this article offers an overview and introduction

Investigating the linguistic representativeness of Early Modern Greek Corpora

    No full text
Following a poorly documented period in the history of vernacular Greek (6th-12th c.), the late 15th century sets the beginning of a linguistic era characterized by a quantitatively and qualitatively incomparable production of prose texts written in “common” language. It is at this point that classicizing Greek stops dominating in writing, and a new linguistic variety – albeit a very diverse and fluid one – Early Modern Greek (EMG) starts growing rapidly as a literacy language. The development of this new variety is manifested in its widespread use as literary language (in texts with aesthetic function), as well as in its use as a simple scripta, namely a written vernacular for legal, administrative, commercial, and other functions. Despite its significance in the history of Greek, this period remains to a large extent unexplored and underrepresented in Greek language corpora. On this view, our understanding of EMG depends crucially on the representativeness of the few available corpora. The aim of this paper is to investigate the linguistic representativeness of EMG corpora, and to explore possible associations between observed linguistic patterns and corpora design. Focusing on the distribution of contrastive and reformulation markers, our study reveals that the linguistic data illustrated in the available EMG corpora are divergent and largely dependent on the representation of variables, such as text form (poetry/prose), period, geographical region, and genr
