Labour Market Profile, Previous Employment and Economic Integration of Refugees: An Austrian Case Study

    No full text
In 2015, large numbers of forced migrants crossed the borders to the European Union and the influx of new arrivals has led to the important question of implications for the host societies. This article assesses the labour market profile and previous employment of the recent inflows of displaced persons, mainly coming from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. Moreover, sectoral unemployment rates and trends in job openings in different economic branches in the host society are compared to the profiles of the refugee population. Analyses are based on two unique datasets on displaced persons in Austria: DiPAS (a social survey among asylum seekers) and competence checks (information on occupational and transferable skills). Results indicate that the labour supply provided by refugees’ roughly corresponds to the labour demand in Austria. In terms of a potential impact on the Austrian labour market, this match might be regarded as favourable

To take medical objects as historical sources seriously, means to turn one’s full attention directlytowards these things repeatedly. Against the background of richly available thing theories andmethodological concepts, each historical object research benefits from various analyticalstrategies. In medicine and the sciences, developed over time, these are within distinctive limitations:reflective description (observation), autoptic inspection (dissection), repeated testing(experimentation) and virtual reproduction (digitisation). Although things neither live, norgenerate autonomous agency, they pass through distinct phases: development and testing, implementation, use and generation of primary effects, storage, latent transition in the depot, rediscovery and presenting secondary meanings. Things relate to texts in a complex way:through inscribed or add-on texts, objects’ own subtexts become apparent. The things’ contextscan be reconstructed from that point. Various readings of the things thus occur and clarify theirstatus as, for instance, research, teaching, or publically performing things, as power, genderedor representational items, but also as in-between things, which meander between the medicalworlds and disciplines as boundary objects. In all medical things, various actors are inscribed, such as patients, healers or instrument makers. It is their ingrained subjectivity, which turns eachobject into a sensitive one and requires that they are dealt with care and respect in research, teaching and public display. Ultimately, medical things do not talk. If they could, they wouldprobably have a lot to say. Therefore, it is the responsibility of historians of medicine and scienceto make them speak

    Erdbebengefährdungskarte für Österreich

    No full text

Wiener Studien|Wiener Studien 134 134|

    No full text
The lament of Juturna at the end of the Aeneid (12,869–886) shows the features of a real funeral complaint, both in form and in the concepts it expresses. Virgil, however, is masterfully able to adapt the τόποι of this genre to the anomalous situation of his character, a goddess forced to regret her own immortality

Nicias and Pericles: Parallel Lives in Thucydides’ Narrative. Wiener Studien|Wiener Studien 134 134|

    No full text
In his Nicias, Plutarch compares Nicias to Pericles quite unfavourably. From themethodological point of view, however, it is better not to conflate his account with that ofThucydides, where Nicias emerges as a competent and brave general with considerablediplomatic skills. It will be argued here that the Athenian historian intentionally juxtaposes thetwo men and favours both of them, although the degree of his evaluation differs. The parallelismbetween the two is achieved by literary and historiographical tools: verbal resonances in theirrespective speeches and similarity of their respective visions of Athens. As well, there is aparallelism concerning their life circumstances and careers, which came abruptly to a tragicend. Their deaths marked the ends of significant eras in Athenian history
