Extraction of Dwellings of Displaced Persons from VHR Radar Imagery – A Review on Current Challenges and Future Perspectives. GI_Forum|GI_Forum 2021, Volume 1|

    No full text
While many studies exist to identify buildings from optical satellite images, radar-based approaches are still lacking in humanitarian contexts. This article outlines the main challenges related to scattering mechanisms returning from huts, tents, informal dwellings, and their natural surroundings, but also from geometric distortions caused by the side-looking radar aperture. An outlook summarizes how these limitations can be overcome by image enhancement or multi-image composites, but also by advanced methods on building extraction, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs). This article aims to stimulate scientific debate and to lay a foundation for the development of new methods

The ValPar.CH project – Assessing the added value of ecological infrastructure in Swiss Parks. eco.mont (Journal on Protected Mountain Areas Research and Management)|eco.mont Vol. 13 No. 2 13 2|

Ecological infrastructure (EI), which is a planned network of high-quality natural and semi-natural elements designed and managed to provide ecosystem services, has the potential to ensure rich and resilient biodiversity. Within the Action Plan for the Swiss Biodiversity Strategy of the Swiss Confederation, the pilot project known as “ValPar.CH – Values of the ecological infrastructure in Swiss parks” aims to analyse the values and benefits of EI at two levels: across Switzerland, and in four parks of national importance (Jurapark Aargau, and Gruyère Pays-d’Enhaut, Pfyn-Finges and Beverin nature parks). The aim is to contribute to reducing biodiversity erosion as currently observed. This objective is met by developing outputs for different stakeholders (scientific papers, recommendations, data, policy tools)

Geophysical Prospection and Verification at the Protohistoric Settlement of Punta di Zambrone (Calabria, Italy). Orea|Punta di Zambrone I Oriental and European Archaeology Volume 17|

    No full text
A multi-method geophysical survey was executed prior to archaeological excavations at Punta di Zambrone, Calabria, Italy. Magnetometry, ground penetrating radar and electrical resistivity tomography were applied under varying survey conditions in different parts of the promontory with the aim of mapping protohistoric traces at different burial depths. In this chapter we summarise the geophysical surveys and compare the results with observations made during the subsequent excavations of the defensive moat of the Bronze Age settlement

Singles in the city: happily ever after?. Vienna Yearbook of Population Research|Vienna Yearbook of Population Research 2021|

More people than ever are living in cities, and in these cities, more and more people are living alone. Using the example of Vienna, this paper investigates the subjective well-being of single households in the city. Previous research has identified positive and negative aspects of living alone (e.g., increased freedom vs. missing social embeddedness). We compare single households with other household types using data from the Viennese Quality of Life Survey (1995–2018). In our analysis, we consider overall life satisfaction as well as selected dimensions of subjective wellbeing (i.e., housing, financial situation, main activity, family, social contacts, leisure time). Our findings show that the subjective well-being of single households in Vienna is high and quite stable over time. While single households are found to have lower life satisfaction than two-adult households, this result is mainly explained by singles reporting lower satisfaction with family life. Compared to households with children, singles are more satisfied with their financial situation, leisure time and housing, which helps to offset the negative consequences of missing family ties (in particular with regard to single parents)

Die Cynegetica des Ps.-Oppian. Möglichkeiten einer Neuedition. Wiener Studien|Wiener Studien 134 134|

The article deals with the textual transmission of Ps.-Oppian’s Cynegetica. It isbased on Papathomopoulos’ Teubner edition (2003) and provides new conjectures and acriticism of Papathomopoulos’ evaluation of MS K (Laur. 32,16). An appendix with a freshcollation of both A (Marc. gr. 479) and K, against the Teubner edition, is also offered

Cohort Fertility Decline in Low Fertility Countries: Decomposition Using Parity Progression Ratios

    No full text
This study provides a systematic analysis of parity components of the cohort fertility decline in 32 low-fertility countries in Europe, North America, Australia and East Asia. We decompose the change in cohort fertility in each country among women born between 1940 and 1970 using parity progression ratios (PPR) derived mostly from census, register data, and large-scale surveys. We are also interested in how the effect of the changing parity progression ratios varied across broader regions and whether it was different in countries reaching very low completed fertility. The fall in fertility was mostly driven by reductions in the progression ratios to third and higher-order births in the first stage of 1940 to 1955 cohorts. Among women born between 1955 and 1970 fertility decline slowed down in most regions. This second stage of the cohort fertility decline analysed here is also distinguished by its regional diversity. The main distinction can be drawn between Central and Eastern Europe, where fertility decline was driven primarily by falling second birth rates and the German-speaking countries, Southern Europe, and East Asia, where the fall in first birth rates (and the corresponding rise in childlessness) had a stronger influence
