Epos

With the definition of the Anthropocene as a new geological epoch, humanity’s relationship with the natural world is being profoundly redefined. Hence, the Anthropocene calls for a new understanding of Being-in-the-World. The new Being-in-the-World is at issue both in theory and literature as it is described as “entanglement” and “rupture”. Focusing on Raoul Schrott’s Erste Erde. Epos, this essay asks what implications this new Being-in-the-World has for the form of Anthropocene literature. The main principle of Schrott’s secular cosmogony is the analogy drawn between Anthropocene theory and the theory of the epic. Both the Anthropocene and the epic have a special relationship to history, both stand for a certain understanding of Being-in-the-World that is opposed to another model (that of modernity, that of the novel), and both show an interest in totality while being heterogeneous in themselves. Reflections on the form, and in particular on the text’s relationship to the theory of the epic, emphasize the significance of Erste Erde. Epos for a poetics of the Anthropocene

Playing with Identity.: Authors, Narrators, Avatars, and Players in The Stanley Parable and The Beginner’s Guide

This article offers a comparative analysis of Davey Wreden’s ;The Stanley Parable (Wreden 2011 / Galactic Cafe 2013) and The Beginner’s Guide (Everything Unlimited Ltd. 2015) in order to explore the interrelation of authors, narrators, avatars, and players as four salient functions in the play with identity that videogames afford. Building on theories of collective and collaborative authorship, of narratives and narrators across media, and of the avatar-player relationship, the article reconstructs the similarities and differences between the way in which The Stanley Parable and The Beginner’s Guide position their players in relation to the two games’ avatars, narrators, and (main) author, while also underscoring how both The Stanley Parable and The Beginner’s Guide use metareferential strategies to undermine any overly rigid conceptualization of these functions and their interrelation

This paper explores how the reflexivity offered by graphic narratives makes them ideally suited to questioning how enshrined historical narratives can (and should) be troubled. In fact, many graphic narratives that engage with historical atrocities insist that the reader question how the past is framed. Surveying several strategies by which graphic narratives of historical atrocities leverage reader investment, I consider how three planes – identification with characters, inference, and point of view – are used to prompt reflection on the way that history is packaged for consumption and consider how these planes develop an ethical relationship with the reader

Potenzierte Fakten.: Das Narrativ der Homöopathie

The article introduces the central ideas of Homeopathy as put forward by Samuel Hahnemann in the 1820s, which remain valid in contemporary Homeopathy teachings although they are inconsistent with fundamental laws of nature and have been invalidated by evidence-based medicine. I will propose to conceptualize Homeopathy as a self-proclaimed factual narrative situated on the borderline of fiction, arguing that it fuses fictive with real / factual elements and that its immense popularity and pervasiveness can be explained by its narrative quality and functionality. Further, the article describes strategies of narrativation in the story of Homeopathy as wells as techniques on the level of discourse which mark the texts as part of factual scientific discourse
