Vom Sag, Sicht und Spürbaren zum Machbaren?: Die Politisierung von Emotionen und Erzählungen in den Corona-Protesten
Get PDFProtests against the Corona policy have been widespread since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the causes and patterns as well as the structures and dynamics of this political protest remain unclear. From a political science perspective, this article focuses on the everyday narrative processes in protest and accentuates a specific field of intersection: the connection between narratives and ‘doing emotions’. With an interaction-oriented perspective on this ‘bottom-up’ protest politics, it reflects on the extent to which the protest community can be understood both as a narrative community and as an emotional regime. Emotional practices open up a new, productive perspective to look at the range of emotional facets from pride, courage, humour and pleasure to moralising indignation, disgust and hatred instead of merely individual strong basic emotions in their interaction. This is illustrated with a view to the narrative 1. (de)construction of the crisis, 2. legitimisation of the protest, and 3. patterns of protest participation
Dreading the Futur: Exploring the Ethical Dimension of Dystopian Fiction
Get PDFGiven that today’s world is preoccupied with climate change, it comes as no surprise that recent speculative narratives predominantly focus on the future of planet Earth. Yet such Anthropocene novels do not make up the entirety of contemporary speculative narratives. This essay first explores how the genre draws on current societal, political, economic, and ecological trends to create dystopian scenarios, and then goes on to investigate the ethical dimension of these models for the world. In the first step it takes John Lanchester’s The Wall (2019), Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale (1986), and Joanne Ramos’s The Farm (2019) as examples and shows how speculative narratives stage ideologies and negotiate human values on the level of both narrative content and narrative transmission. The second step, an investigation into the interplay of the ethics of the telling and the ethics of the told, then serves to illustrate the degree to which the aesthetic form of a narrative can determine the ethical implications of reading speculative fiction in the age of the Anthropocene

Get PDFFrom a modern rationalist viewpoint, the credibility of Christian hagiography must appear at least doubtful. At the same time, legendary narratives claim to report what really happened in history, when God acted out of transcendence in immanence, in a saint’s life. This truth and reality of the Holy is revealed in the veneration of the saint by the faithful public of the legend. Hagiography thus generates a specific claim of its own to truth, which stands at the variance with the modern and secular separation of facticity and fiction, of ‚truth‘ and ‚legend‘. The present article discusses how, in the Legenda aurea, the most important collection of hagiographies of the high Middle Ages, this claim is realized in institutional and narrative strategies that present the individual legends as part of the liturgically recalled history of salvation. Therefore, the Legenda aurea affirms to impart authenticated facts, even where it acknowledges uncertainties in tradition and dubious embellishments. This conception of reality is replaced only in the Reformation’s criticism of legendary narratives, making history as a historical event the standard for the value of a sacred life
