Exploring the Interrelationship between Scientific Knowledge and Economic Growth in Serbia: Empirical Insights
The primary objective of this study is to examine the nature of the relationship between the production of scientific knowledge and economic growth in Serbia during the period 1996-2022. For this purpose, the Vector Autoregression approach, along with the impulse response function and forecast error variance decomposition, was employed. Results suggest an impact of economic growth on the production of scientific knowledge, while no impact in the opposite direction is detected. The Serbian government should persist in investing in science and work closely with the scientific community to overcome barriers to scientific knowledge's full contribution to economic prosperity
Izazovi i perspektive finansiranja lokalnih samouprava putem banaka
Finansiranje lokalnih samouprava predstavlja kompleksan proces,
‘Green’ Energy in ‘Red’ Yugoslavia: The Failure of Hydroelectric Power in Yugoslavia between the 1960s and 1980s
This research focuses on the positive and negative experiences with renewable energy in socialist Yugoslavia in order to provide suggestions to contemporary policymakers based on a historical experience that is very limited. The fact that the country at times produced up to 75% of its electricity for industry and households in hydroelectric power plants is an admirable achievement from the perspective of the contemporary EU Green Deal. However, the experiences were sometimes catastrophic, ranging from city blackouts to prolonged production stoppages in industry. Despite some exceptions, the existing Serbian or regional scholarship has not yet analyzed this topic except from technological or engineering perspectives. Starting from that point, this research employs a critique of the sources as a standard historical method. It is based on primary and secondary sources, stretching from official Yugoslav policies and statistics, expert analyses, and newspaper articles. Previous experiences with electricity production in hydroelectric power plants in Yugoslavia are crucial in adequately approaching the EU Green Deal agenda that includes the expansion of renewable energy sources, which is and will most certainly be one of the pressing challenges in the future. At the current level of technological capabilities, the transition to renewable energy, whether from hydro, solar, wind, or geothermal sources, faces a challenge in providing a continuous flow of energy to industry and households. Lacking capacities for storage of vast amounts of electric energy, the solutions to this challenge will have to be found in conventional sources, among which nuclear power currently seems to be the best option, despite other environmental and safety concerns it raises
Izazovi savremenog menadžmenta: fleksibilnost, rodna ravnopravnost i inovativna komunikacija
(Ne) prečišćavanje otpadnih voda u zemljama Balkana
Problem otpadnih voda u značajnoj
meri doprinosi narušavanju kvaliteta životne sredine
u većini balkanskih zemalja. Neadekvatno upravljanje
otpadnim vodama prouzrokuje dugoročne rizike po
društveno blagostanje i vitalnost celokupnog
ekosistema. Cilj rada je analiza problema i
sagledavanje načina rešavanja problema otpadnih
voda u zemljama Balkana. U tu svrhu je korišćen EPI
indeks (engl. Environmental Performance Index) za
2022. godinu. Rezultati analize pokazuju da je
Slovenija najbolje rangirana od svih posmatranih
zemalja kada je prečišćavanje otpadnih voda u
pitanju. U ovom segmentu analize performansi životne
sredine, Sloveniju slede Grčka i Hrvatska, dok
najlošiji rang analiziranog indeksa beleže Severna
Makedenija i Srbija. Loš rang na osnovu EPI indeksa
pokazuje da se u ovim zemljama otpadne vode uopšte
ne tretiraju na adekvatan način. Zaključna
razmatranja obuhvataju i preporuke da se u zemljama
u razvoju uvede restriktivnija zakonska regulativa,
oštrijom kaznenom politikom. Bitan segment
preporuka se odnosi na podizanje svesti kod
stanovništva, kao i razvoj sistema za prikupljanje i
prečišćavanje otpadnih voda
Volatility Spillover: Garch Analysis of S&P 500's Influence on Precious Metals
In this study, the volatility spillovers from the S&P 500
to the precious metals (gold, silver and platinum) are investigated.
By using the TGARCH and DCC GARCH model, the evidence is
found that there are spillovers between the S&P 500 and these global
commodity markets. However, there are some differences in times
of crises which have occurred during the observed 15 years (global
economic crisis, debt crisis and corona crisis). In the case of gold, despite
extreme volatility, there is no clear evidence of the specific influence
of the crises. In contrast, silver and platinum showed clearer
situations, both demonstrating significant increases in correlation
with the S&P 500 index during global economic crises
Promoting Economic Inclusivity in Serbia -Recommendations for Enhancing National and Local Policies in Women's Entrepreneurship
The aim of the research is to assess current practices supporting women's entrepreneurship and employment in Serbia. Based on the findings, recommendations are developed to enhance national and local policies in this area, alongside indicators for monitoring progress. The research includes an analysis of the legal and institutional framework, supplemented by data from surveys of local self-government unit (LSGU) representatives and focus groups involving women entrepreneurs and city administration officials. The research spans the period from 2019 to 2022. Key findings underscore significant barriers encountered by women entrepreneurs, such as inadequate access to financial resources, limited educational programs, and a lack of mentorship opportunities. Recommendations encompass the introduction of specialized support programs, the integration of a gender perspective across all facets of the legal and institutional framework, and ongoing alignment with European and international standards. These proposals are expected to bolster national and local policies, thereby fostering improved economic participation and sustainability in women's entrepreneurship. Future research should concentrate on the long-term impacts of these policies and comparative analyses with countries that have adopted advanced, gender-sensitive entrepreneurial policies
Gender perspectives of twin transition in agriculture and food sector companies
This paper investigates the gender perspectives in the twin transition of companies in Serbia’s agriculture and food sector, focusing on their adoption of information and communication technologies (ICT) and green/environmental activities. Using primary data from computer-assisted telephone interviews, a comprehensive survey was conducted among sector companies. Statistical analysis included descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests to compare differences between groups. The results highlight the significant impact of gender diversity on digitalisation adoption. However, disparities emerge in the green transition, particularly in waste reduction through recycling, raw material reuse, and supplier selection based on environmental criteria. No gender-specific differences were found in reducing harmful emissions or using eco-friendly packaging. This study enhances understanding of gender dynamics in the agri-food sector’s twin transformation and highlights how gender perspectives influence digital and environmental practices. The findings inform policymakers and businesses on promoting gender-sensitive strategies for sustainable development and economic growth in Serbia and beyond
