It is believed that this work was written between the years 1230 and 1236, and is probably the first work composed by the cleric Gonzalo de Berceo.
It narrates the life of the Catholic saint San Millán(in Latin Sanctus Aemilianus). He was a priest and hermit and the founder of the Benedictine monastery that bears his name. He lived between 474―574.
This work, written in the erudite form of cuaderna vía (four-fold way), appears to be inspired by the Latin hagiography of Bishop San Braurio de Zaragosa in the times of the Visigoths in the sixth century.
