Elderly Women Who Enjoy Farming and the Farmers’ Market ： A case study of elderly women growing vegetables and blueberries by hand in Kawaba village
Get PDF本稿は、群馬県利根郡川場村の「道の駅川場田園プラザ」にある農産物直売所に注目する。地元の高齢女性がどのように農産物直売所に関わり、野菜や果樹の生産と出荷を支えながら、農を楽しむようになったのか、その経緯を二人の高齢女性の語りから明らかにすることを目的とする。過疎山村の指定を受けた川場村が農産物直売所を設置して過疎からの脱却をめざすが、それを支えたのは多くの農家女性たちであった。開設当初から手作り野菜を出荷してきた二人の女性に着目し、個別具体的な事例からその現状の分析を行った。二人に共通するのは、昭和四十年代の過疎山村の生活変化を体験した世代であり、伝統的な生活感覚を保ちながら農を楽しんでいること、個人の才覚で販売促進努力をしていること、そして高齢期を生き生きと暮らしていることである。
高齢女性たちにとって、農産物直売所は毎日顔を合わせる場であり、丹精した農産物の販売を通して客と交流する空間である。単に農産物を出荷するだけでなく、世代の異なる生産者が売れ行きや都会からの客の情報を交換しあい、野菜づくりの知見を深める場でもある。朝の出荷時には生産者が同じ空間に集まるので村の情報が集まり、作業をしながら会話を楽しむことができる。農産物を通して顧客を獲得できることは生産者にとってモチベーションが上がる。三世代が揃う農家では、高齢女性が野菜を作って袋詰めをし、息子や嫁が出荷するなど、野菜づくりから出荷までの一連の流れが家族の年齢・体力に応じて役割分担されている。
道の駅に付随する農産物直売所の特質は、高齢女性が持っている野菜・果樹を育てるコツと技術だけでなく、川場村の自然環境のなかで伝えられた伝統的な農事暦を基本にして、日々の農を楽しむことにある。川場村名産のブルーベリーは高齢者の体力に見合った果樹であり、高齢女性たちは軽量野菜などの選択をしながらも農産物直売所を支え続けている。This manuscript considers the involvement of elderly women in the farmers’ market in Kawaba Village, Tone-gun, Gunma Prefecture. The agricultural produce direct sales shop we focus on here is a facility attached to Kawaba Denen Plaza, a roadside station (michinoeki). Michinoeki are public facilities, of which about 1,200 exist throughout the nation, and numbers are increasing each year. Kawaba Village, designated as a depopulated area in 1971, aimed to escape depopulation by opening a direct sales center for the farmers’ market in 1995. This effort was widely supported by many farm women. Michinoeki Kawaba Denen Plaza, the roadside station, was founded in 1996. Visitors can purchase vegetables and fruits grown locally in Kawaba Village and enjoy cooking with them. Both local people and visitors enjoy using MichinoEki Kawaba Denen Plaza. Today, the farm women of those days who have supported this farmers’ market from the beginning have aged and become elderly women. The purpose of this paper is to reveal, through the narratives of two elderly local women, how they became involved in the direct sales of agricultural products and how they came to enjoy farming while supporting the production and shipment of vegetables and fruit. These two women have been shipping vegetables grown by hand since the establishment of the farmers market, and this paper also analyzes their current situation through specific case studies. They are the generation that experienced the changes in the lives of depopulated mountain village residents in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and they are enjoying farming while maintaining a traditional sense of life, making efforts to promote sales through their personal talents, and living vibrantly in their old age. The farmers’ market serves as a place for producers of different generations to exchange information and deepen their knowledge of vegetable production. In farm households, roles are divided among family members in the processes of vegetable growing and shipping. The direct sales center not only benefits from the tips and techniques possessed by the elderly women but also their enjoyment of daily farming based on the traditional farming calendar. The women also support the direct sales of blueberries, a specialty of Kawaba Village, as growing them is suitable in consideration of their physical strength as they grow older.論文departmental bulletin pape
