Elucidation of the Mechanism of Attraction to Molting Fluid in Crabs

    Get PDF
Crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs shed their old exoskeletons by molting. The space between the old and new exoskeleton is filled with molting fluid, which is released to the outside during molting. In 2023, it was discovered that N -acetylglucosamine-6-phosphate (GlcNAc6P), a metabolite of chitin, was present at high concentrations in the molting fluid of the Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis). GlcNAc6P was detected at high levels only during the pre-molt stage and shown to attract other crabs. These results suggest that GlcNAc6P released immediately after molting may act as an attractant pheromone, potentially triggering cannibalistic behavior. Cannibalism is a phenomenon observed not only in crabs, but also in many crustaceans, making its scientific study important. However, in Japan, E. sinensis is listed as an invasive alien species, making cannibalism research on this species legally challenging. Therefore, in this study, we investigated whether GlcNAc6P attracts other individuals in the native crab, the Japanese mitten crab (Eriocheir japonica). The results showed that juvenile crabs tended to stay longer on paper discs impregnated with GlcNAc6P. In addition, GlcNAc6P induced significant feeding behavior in E. japonica. These results suggest that GlcNAc6P may serve as a cue for cannibalism in E. japonica. This study demonstrates that the Japanese mitten crab can also be used as a model organism for further research on crustacean cannibalism.原著 2024年度神奈川大学総合理学研究所共同研究助成論文departmental bulletin pape

Potential Impact of Bullying Recognition on Students : Critical Studies to the Bullying Problem as Social Problem

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine the current recognition of bullying from the perspective of its impact on students and to present a vision for its elimination. Behind the record number of bullying cases recognized in 2023 is the problem of recognition due to the defined of “pain” by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. This definition of “pain” includes “death,” which is problematic. The problem is that death has become an option for victims as a way of expressing their “pain”. One way to resolve this problem is to separate trivial troubles from bullying and use new terms. For example, Imazu (2024) uses “painful and distressing feelings(of a pupil)”. Another way is the discursive practice of separating bullying from “death”. If the “pain” of the victim is linked to “death,” this marks an attempt to transform the “pain” that defines bullying. Here, Sugenoʼs definition(1986) of “discrimination” is used. By using the definition of “discrimination,” the victimʼs choice is not ‘death’ but “prosecution”. If the proposed practice is realized, victims will stop committing suicide due to bullying. This will destroy the social norm that bullying alone can lead to death, and it would no longer be regarded as a social problem. In addition, it could bring relief to the alleged perpetrator students, that is, they would not be labeled as perpetrators of bullying.departmental bulletin pape
