The System of Metaphorical Type of Politeness in Ancient and Early Modern Chinese ： The Interpersonal Rhetoric Related to the Dualism of “Yin and Yang”
Get PDFThe purpose of this paper is to make theoretical investigation into the polite expressions in traditional Chinese from the perspective of historical pragmatics. Through tracing the original source of the formation of ancient Chinese politeness, we have clarified the relationship between the metaphorical expressions and the dualistic philosophy “Yin and Yang”, and have described the system of the metaphorical type of politeness which had been used over two thousand years in Chinese language. Finally, we have indicated the difference between the metaphorical type and the other two types of politeness, which are the strategic type used in English and the deictic type used in Japanese respectively.本文旨在從歴史語用學的角度對傳統漢語中的禮貌現象做理論探索，通過追溯古近代漢語“敬謙詞”形成的淵源，闡明“隠喻型”禮貌表達方式與傳統的“陰陽”世界觀的關聯，並系統地構建這套延續使用了兩千多年的禮貌語言的理論體系。最後指出這套“隠喻型”禮貌體系與英語中的“策略型”禮貌和日語中的“直示型”禮貌之間的區别。〔言語研究センター創立50周年記念論文〕departmental bulletin pape
