Living with the Acceptance of the “Box” －A Reading of Haruki Murakamiʼs “Tony Takitani”
Get PDFIn this paper, I examine Haruki Murakamiʼs short story “Tony Takitani”. This story is significant not only as a masterpiece but also because it explores the motif of the “box”, a recurring theme in Murakamiʼs work. Previous studies have interpreted “Tony Takitani” in various ways, often focusing on the protagonistʼs loneliness, particularly in relation to his wife and other interpersonal relationships. In contrast to these approaches, this paper centers on the motif of the “box”.
In Chapter II, I analyze the “boxes” present in five key scenes of “Tony Takitani”, paying close attention to the charactersʼactions, positioning, and relationship to Tony Takitani. In Chapter III, I synthesize these findings and, through an examination of the text, explore the “true” sense of “aloneness” that Tony Takitani ultimately experiences, as shaped by the function of the “box”.departmental bulletin pape
Japanese Titles that Hindered the Understanding of Antonioni’s Films
Get PDFミケランジェロ・アントニオーニの映画公開時の多くの邦題について，映画の内容の理解を阻害するものだったことを具体例について指摘した。それらの邦題には，（1）映画のなかの表層の現象を取り上げたり，（2）扇情などの集客意図が強調されたりする傾向が認められた。しかし，前者については，アントニオーニが表層の背後にある意識やリアリティーを映像化しようとしたことと背馳し，後者については，アントニオーニが抑制的な内容と演技とを追求したことと背馳していた。どちらも，題名という出発点で観客がそれらの映画の本質を認識することを困難にしたのである。アントニオーニ映画が人類の文化遺産となっている現在では集客を求める必要がなくなっているから，理解を妨げる邦題については改題する必要があるだろう。その意図から，改題例も提案した。Many of the Japanese titles given to Antonioniʼs films when they were shown in Japan hindered the understanding of the filmsʼ content. Among those problematic titles, some focused on the surface phenomena found in the films, while others tried to attract audience by sensationalism. This film director, however, did not aim at depicting the surface phenomena but aimed to depict what was behind them, while he always avoided sensationalism and emphasized restraint in content and acting. These misleading titles thus set a stumbling block to the audience at the very beginning of viewing the films. As Antonioniʼs films are now part of the cultural heritage for humans and need no more box office success, the delusive Japanese titles ought to be replaced by the ones that correspond to the directorʼs intentions.departmental bulletin pape
