Assessment of Pb, Cd, Cr and Ni in Water and Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) Plant from Woji Creek, Rivers State, Nigeria
This study evaluates the levels of Pb, Cd, Cr and Ni and the potential
ability of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) plant to bioaccumulate
these metals in Woji Creek, Rivers State, Nigeria by collecting water
and water hyacinth samples along a 1.3 km stretch of the creek between
2018 and 2019 for analysis. Water samples and plants were collected
from five stations across the creek from June to October of both years.
The trend of metal concentration in the surface water is Pb > Cr
> Ni > Cd in 2018 and Pb > Ni > Cr > Cd in 2019. In
2018, metal concentration in the root are in the order: Cr > Ni >
Pb > Cd, while the trend for the shoot is Cr > Pb > Ni >
Cd. In 2019, Cd was detected in the roots ranging from 1.009 \ub1
0.001 to 9.545 \ub1 0.006, while Pb ranged from 0.298 \ub1 0.006
mg/kg to 121.006 \ub1 0.005 mg/kg. There was substantial
bioaccumulation of Pb, Ni and Cr in the roots with most plant roots
having BCF > 1. In the shoot, BCF was > 1 for Pb and Cr only,
while Ni had BCF < 1. The findings from this research also assert
that the E. crassipes can be used in the application of rhizofiltration
as phytoremediation technique in Woji creek
Land Hunger in Omo Forest Reserve, Area J4, Ogun State Prospects: Of Creating Harmony among Land Users
The study verified the extent of land hunger in Omo Forest Reserve,
area J4, Ogun State, with a view to creating harmony among land users.
Five villages/communities (Osoko, Aberu, Fowowa, Bashiru and Oloji) in
Omo Forest Reserve, area J4, Ijebu East, Ogun State were selected for
the study due to the level of their involvement in farming activities.
Data was obtained using two set of structured questionnaire and
analyzed using descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression at
\u3b1 = 0.05. A high level of land hunger was proven and its main
causes (population increase and area of forest reservation) were
identified. Good governance in the affairs of the reserve, followed by
the empowerment of the people to have a say in the management of the
forest reserve and a holistic land use policy, with odd ratios of 3.85,
2.73 and 2.37, respectively would highly influence the reduction of
conflict between farmers and foresters in Omo Forest Reserve (J4)
Sedimentologic, Heavy Mineral and Provenance Studies of the Cretaceous Sediments in the Auchi Area of the Anambra Basin
The Upper Cretaceous Deposits of the Anambra Basin has a part of its
sedimentary rock deposited in the Auchi area of Edo State. Geologic
field and Sedimentological studies carried out on twenty eight (28)
selected samples from a section of a road\u2013cut show that the
sediments range from fine through medium to coarse grained.
Morphoscopic studies reveal subangular to subrounded outline of sand
particles. These coupled with the various colours observed in the
sediment, ranging from whitish sand through yellowish brown, pink and
reddish brown possibly indicate a non\u2013marine environment and a
fluviatile to deltaic environment of sedimentation is suggested. Heavy
mineral assemblage made up mainly of opaque, andalusite, zircon,
hornblend, sphene and epidote suggest derivation from the Precambrian
Igneous and medium to high grade metamorphic rocks of the underlying
Basement Complex of Nigeria
Well Water Quality Assessment: A Case of Gaba and Zuma Communities, Bwari Area Council, Abuja, Nigeria
The sixth Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) underscores the need for
clean, accessible water and good sanitation for all as an essential
part of the world we live in. However, water scarcity still affects
more than 30% of the world\u2019s population. Many communities,
especially in Africa, have resorted to substandard and cheaper sources
of water for consumption, and hand dug well is one of them. In this
study, the physicochemical, biochemical and microbiological assessment
of well water samples from Gaba 1, Gaba 11 and Zuma 11 communities in
Bwari Area Council, Abuja, Nigeria were carried out as a case study to
determine the quality of well water. The American Public Health
Association (APHA) standard analytical methods were adopted and results
were compared with the World Health Organization (WHO) standards and
Nigerian Standard for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ). From the results
obtained for the physicochemical parameters, turbidity and colour did
not meet up with the WHO and NSDWQ standard. Colour ranged from
330\ub120PtCo to 57.60\ub114.50PtCo as against 15PtCo by WHO and
NSDWQ, turbidity ranged from 45.2\ub10.2NTU to 7.19\ub10.4NTU as
against 5NTU by WHO and NSDWQ. Other physicochemical parameters were
within WHO and NSDWQ limit. The bacteriological and biochemical results
showed the presence of E-coli and other coliforms in all the samples.
The total coliforms count for all the wells ranged from 1.55x102 to
1.775x102 CFU/ml, indicating a noncompliance to the zero count per
100ml by WHO. Well water from these communities pose a great health
risk to the consumers
Quality Assessment and Suitability Evaluation of Soils under Tuber-based Cropping System in Katsina Ala Local Government Area, Benue State, Nigeria
Crop yields together with economic and social benefits of farming
depend in part on land management and soil quality. Soil management and
cropping systems have long-term effects on agronomic and environmental
functions. This study aimed at assessing soils under yam-based cropping
systems for quality and suitability so as to enhance sustainable
production. The study was carried out in Katsina Ala local government
area of Benue state where yam is a major crop. Sixteen modal profile
were dug, described for characterization and suitability evaluation.
Ten cluster locations were selected and twenty soil samples randomly
collected within each cluster. The soils were subjected to laboratory
analyses and results subjected descriptive statistics. Suitability of
the soils for yam, citrus and groundnut were evaluated using parametric
approach and soil quality of the area was assessed using Relative Soil
Quality Indices (RSQI). The soils encountered are sandy to silty in
nature with some having plinthite at depth. The soils, classified as
Alfisol, Entisol and Inceptisol are moderately (S2) to highly suitable
S1) for the three crops and have moderate to high quality for crop
production with percentage soil quality index ranging from 60. 37 to
74.31 %. Soils of the study site are of good quality and are suitable
for production of yam, citrus and groundnut. However, because yam is a
great feeder and tropical soils are fragile making them prone to
degradation, there is need for maintenance of soil fertility through
organic matter management for sustainable use
Effect of Landfill Leachate on Groundwater Contamination: A case study of Obio-Akpo Local Government Area, Rivers State, Nigeria
This research investigates the effect of landfill leachate on the
groundwater in \u201cOdum\u201d, a community that plays host to a
dumpsite along Choba/Alakahia road in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area
(L.G.A.) of Rivers State, Nigeria. Five vertical electrical soundings
(VES) were conducted using the Schlumberger configuration and also five
horizontal profiling were done using the Wenner configuration. The
field data were acquired using ABEM tarrameter SAS 300C, and processed
using the IP TWO WAY software. The results showed that the area is
composed of sandstone, clay, laterite, sandy clay, and sand. Also, from
careful analysis and interpretation of the processed data it was
observed that contaminated zones have low resistivity (high
conductivity). Strikingly, areas of low resistivity such as 11.9
\u3a9m and others with high resistivity up to greater than 1818
\u3a9m do exist. The results show that groundwater around this
landfill contaminated area contains highly conductive leachates like
sulphur, methane, ammonia gas at depths > 16 m. This indicates that
the study area is not a good aquifer zone

The impact of menopause on sexual function in women and their spouses
Background: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of
menopause on sexual function in women and their spouses. Methods: This
is a cross-sectional study that was conducted from January 2018 to May
2019 in Rasht (North of Iran). The participants included 215 menopausal
women and their spouses. Data were collected using the demographic
questionnaire, the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire,
and the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire.
Results: On the basis of the FSFI and IIEF scores, 36.28% (78/215)
women reported female sexual dysfunction (FSD) and 17.2% (37/215) men
reported erectile dysfunction (ED) with 8.37% (N = 18) being mild,
5.58% (N = 12) mild to moderate, and 3.25% (N = 7) moderate ED. After
adjusting differences in the female age distribution, the total score
and scores of the IIEF subscales were also not significantly lower in
the spouses of women with FSD than women without FSD. Conclusion:
Although, significant correlations between male erectile function and
menopausal female sexual function have not identified; but, low scores
of the subscales of FSFI in female participants mostly impaired sexual
satisfaction and overall satisfaction in their spouses
Associations of transcription factor 7-Like 2 (TCF7L2) gene polymorphism in patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa population of Pakistan
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the most prevalent
component of metabolic syndrome. Environmental factors and various
complex genes like transcription factor 7-like 2 (TCF7L2) gene have
involved in the disease development. Objective: To determine TCF7L2
genetic association (rs7903146C/T and rs12255372G/T) in T2DM patients
of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa population of Pakistan. Subjects and methods:
This study comprised of 176 subjects including 118 T2DM patients and 58
healthy controls. Genomic DNA was extracted and genotype of common
variants (rs7903146 C/T and rs12255372 G/T) was carried out by
amplification-refractory mutation system (ARMS)-PCR of sequence
specific oligonucleotides. Results: The distribution of genotype of
TCF7L2 SNPs (rs7903146 C/T and rs12255372 G/T) was significantly
associated with T2DM as compared to the controls (p <0.0001). The
genetic models of the rs7903146 (C/T) and rs12255372 (G/T) SNPs were
significantly associated between cases and controls (p <0.0001). On
the other hand, the significant association was observed between the
two SNPs and different biochemical parameters like serum fasting
glucose, lipid profile, creatinine and blood HbA1c levels (p <0.05).
Conclusion: It is concluded that the SNPs of the TCF7L2 gene are
significantly associated with T2DM disease susceptibility in the
population of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa of Pakistan
