Evacuation planning under selfish evacuation routing
In case of an evacuation a large number of evacuees must be routed through a street network to let them leave the endangered area and reach safe places. In such a situation a lot of evacuees use the street network in a short time span and so the network capacity will be insufficient. With an evacuation plan the traffic could be guided through the network for a better use of network capacity. But to implement the solution planned by a central decision maker, optimal routes must be communicated to all network users, which lead to a high communication effort. Furthermore, it must be ensured that the evacuees take the given routes. But a lot of people do not follow the instructions from authorities in a panic situation. They do what they assume is best for themselves. Such selfish behaviour leads to a suboptimal distribution of traffic and results in congestion. In this thesis we present a concept to guide the evacuees through the network without determining optimal routes for all network users. With the blockage of street sections we force the evacuees to use other routes than the preferred ones but give them the possibility to choose their routes on their own. The thesis presents different mathematical model formulations and heuristic for the described problem. In a comprehensive computational study, with real world examples, the functionality of the presented concept and methods are tested
The impact of drug associated cues on decision making behavior - a study with an modified version of the Iowa Gambling Task
People with an opiate dependency are impaired in functional decision making. They choose the short-term rewarding abuse, without considering long-term negative consequences. Momentary there is no study comparing the decision making behavior of different treatment groups of opiate-dependent patients. In a study with 81 opiate addicts (39 just before completion of a withdrawal of opiates, 42 stable substitutes) the decision making behavior of withdrawal patients and substitution patients has been compared. By means of a modified version of the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) with addiction relevant stimuli, the decision making behavior has been recorded under ambiguity. In addition, decision making behavior has been recorded using the Game of Dice Task (GDT) under risk conditions. The results have represented that substitutes significantly improved performance in the modified IGT as withdrawal patients (p = .01) as well as significantly less addictive pressure at the sight of pictures, illustrating motives that are associated with drug abuse (p <.01). In the ambiguity phase of the modified IGT, there has been no significant difference between the groups (p = .99) and significantly better performances of the substitution group during the last phase (p <.01) after the learning process. Furthermore, withdrawal patients in the GDT showed a significantly riskier decision making behavior than substitution patients (p <.001). Possible explanatory approaches for the high rate of relapse after completed withdrawal syndrome treatment without follow-up treatment can be concluded. Moreover, the results suggest that stable substitution therapy positively affects functional decisions as well as craving
Human mature CD5+ B-cells resemble murine B-1a-cells
It is indisputable that a design engineer is responsible for the requirement-driven functional and geometrical design of new products and that through this responsibility, has a significant impact on the associated quality and manufacturing costs. The complexity of the design solutions often prohibits an adequate assessment of the production costs and can make it difficult to consider alternative manufacturing methods. The manufacturing costs normally emerge only once the product is phased into production. In order to allow the design engineer to better fulfill this responsibility for product costs, this dissertation considers the technical productivity (expressed with the terms effectivity and efficiency) of the process chain between the design engineering and production departments. There are answers to the questions formulated: What can be done to achieve an improvement in the current process-chain between the design engineering and production departments?
In answering this question, CAD methods will be introduced which allow the inclusion of production knowledge into the earliest possible stages of the design and development process. Considering selected problem fields in the drilling, turning and milling processes, solutions for creating geometry through machining methods and for analyzing the producibility of 3D CAD models will be presented. Through the implementation of the methods and the development of a special machining-focused environment in the 3D CAD system, the design engineer will be given the ability to align the product modeling process with design guidelines and project-specific manufacturing and economic constraints. By using special methods of knowledge-based design engineering (KBE) and adapted web technologies (Webservice), the geometric information which is bundled in a production-focused form feature will be supplemented with additional technological parameters, such as tools, tool parameters, tool paths and necessary manufacturing operations (e.g. roughing and finishing). For more complex geometrical features, surface-based modeling methods for the design of three-dimensional and production compliant tool-movement envelopes will be provided. These increased-value, production-oriented features are the basis for the cost-estimation in the design phase and for the coupling of the CAD and CAM environments. As a result, the manufacturing-relevant data and information will be extracted by the CAM environment so that the production operations for each step can be determined in a simple manner. This approach results in a complete chain between the design engineering and production departments and can improve the quality of the CAD-CAM information exchange
Fluoride contamination in drinking water can cause severe health problems, namely fluorosis. Defluoridation of drinking water is a practical option to overcome the problem of excessive fluoride in drinking water. Considering that most affected regions are located in less developed countries, it is necessary to find a safe and inexpensive defluoridation technique in order to remove the excess fluoride from drinking water. This study proposes two hybrid methods that have not been investigated with emphasis not only on the fluoride removal but also on the removal of the aluminum residue in the product water.
The first step of the hybrid process is based on coagulation and co-precipitation based on Nalgonda technique. Alum (Al2(SO4)3) is used as coagulant, while lime (Ca(OH)2) accounts for maintaining the system pH and as precipitation agent. However, the drawback of this process is a significant aluminum level in the product water.
A systematic process study has shown that the removal of fluoride occurred very fast. It was best carried out at neutral pH and with an excessive amount of aluminum coagulant. Fluoride ions were adsorbed by precipitated aluminum hydroxide. After certain time the precipitated aluminum hydroxide collided and enmeshed fine particles and later settled down. It is suggested that the removal reaction follows a sweep mechanism.
Furthermore, to decrease fluoride concentration to the desired concentration, the optimum alum dosing was successfully determined. Reduction of fluoride concentration from an initial concentration of 10 mg/L to below 1.5 mg/L was best at an aluminum dosing of 100 mg/L that is corresponding to an Al3+ to F- molar ratio ≥ 7. Meanwhile, for fluoride with initial concentration of 4 mg/L, an Al3+ to F- molar ratio ≥ 4, equal to 17 mg/L aluminum, achieved the same purpose. This amount of aluminum is clearly lower than needed in the Nalgonda technique which is 16 to 181 mg/L or treating raw water with fluoride levels of 2 to 8 mg/L. Lower amounts of aluminum are preferred to avoid excess of aluminum residue in the product water and to minimize the sludge formation.
A species diagram shows that pH plays the most important role on the process especially in controlling the quality of product water. The removal of fluoride in raw water from the initial concentration of 10 mg/L to below 1.5 mg/L was achieved in the pH range 6 - 8. At this pH range Al(OH)3 has low solubility and easily precipitates. Besides, at this pH the pHPZC of Al(OH)3 indicates that the precipitate is neutral to positively charged. In addition, by maintaining the pH on this level, the amount of OH- ions as competing ion to fluoride to occupy Al(OH)3 precipitate is also smaller.
As second step in the hybrid process a sand filter has been investigated to deal with excess residue of aluminium in the produce water. The insertion of a sand filter after the coagulation and co-precipitation step is proposed considering that the high level of aluminium in the product water is caused by suspended aluminium that still remained in product water after long term of settling down. In the laboratory scale, sand filtration as part of the hybrid process showed successful removal of aluminium to a concentration that will not lead to a risk for consumer health based on WHO standard (0.2 mg/L).
Finally, a hybrid process of coagulation and co-precipitation with membrane ultrafiltration has been investigated. The hybrid process also successfully achieved 90% reduction of aluminum concentration in the water after the coagulation and co-precipitation step by the UF membrane operation. The aluminum concentration after the hybrid process fulfilled the WHO standard of 0.2 mg/L.
In conclusion, the study on the hybrid proces coagulation and co-precipitation with filtration for defluoridation of drinking water has brought a new insight on how to control the coagulation and co-precipitation process. Extention to this work by using additional parameter gives a new opportunity on its development. The investigation has also shown that the hybrids defluoridation process is considerable technique that can be applied as alternatives to the existing one. Investigation to different material of membrane will open a new challenge in its applicatio
On growth processes and motion of particles in protoplanetary disks
The process of planet formation is dened by a multiplicity of physical and chemical effects. Observations show that { starting from sub-micrometer sizes { particles have to reach planetesimal sizes in approximately three million years. This implies growth over at least thirty decades in mass. Within this work, two aspects are treated in detail: the collisional dynamics of dust particles and their motion in protoplanetary disks. The material properties and their in uence on the collisional behaviour as well as the eect of reaccretion of ejecta in small impactor - large target collisions are investigated.
It is shown that both aspects can have signicant impact on the growth process in certain areas of the disk.
The motion of particles in protoplanetary disks is caused by dierent forces. A new analytic formula for photophoretic forces aecting irradiated particles in a gaseous environment with temperatures deviating from the surrounding gas is presented. Applying this formula to particles in pre-transitional disks results in a self-sustained recycling mechanism which is established within the inner parts of those disks. Hence, this process can explain the stability of the inner dust disk while no material is replenished by the outer disk through the gap
Greenfield Investments vs. Crossborder M&A: A theoretical and empirical analysis of German foreign direct investment
Ein Vergleich mit den bisher vorliegenden empirischen Untersuchungen rundet die Analyse ab.This thesis is one of the first theoretical and empirical studies analyzing the establishment mode choice of German companies investing abroad. Greenfield investments and cross-border M&A are no substitutes for each other but two different investment strategies based on both diverging motives and strategic targets.
The analysis establishes a comprehensive theoretical reference frame by uniting different theories, including a variety of internal and external factors („four level model“). In order to empirically assess the hypotheses derived from the theoretical framework a completely new and unique data set has been modelled. It contains mainly company-specific data captured from more than 1800 German companies operating in different sectors. A binary logit model is used to analyze the data.
The results of the empirical study show that a multitude of company-specific and external factors have an influence on the choice of the establishment mode. Multinational companies tend to choose greenfield investments if they are experienced in setting up own subsidiaries abroad, are characterized by a high research intensity, can benefit from subsidies in the foreign market, expect a high demand for their products, and if there are significant cultural differences between Germany and the host country. On the other hand, cross-border M&A are favored if the multinational company is large, is very experienced in acquiring foreign companies, intends to a enter a new industry, grows rapidly, or follows a multinational company strategy.
The results of the empirical analysis are finally compared with other empirical studies focusing on the establishment mode choice of foreign direct investors
Conception, Design and Implementation of Assistance Functions for Taking Over Control from Highly Automated Driving
The ongoing development of driver assistance systems leads to a continuous increase in the degree of automation of today’s vehicles. Whilst latest systems already carry out lateral or longitudinal guidance to a big amount, the combination of these functions will lead to the first automated car. The fact that this prediction is not fictive is known since at least the Darpa Urban Challenge in 2007. In this race robot cars competed against each other in an urban environment.
However, until this point can be reached many challenges have to be faced. Next to unanswered questions dealing with responsibilities and licensing, even challenges in the field of technology have to be taken. Therefore the introduction of automated cars into the market, is expected to be carried out step by step. Whilst nowadays already partly automatic functions are being used in series cars, the next step will be automatic driving for specified time. In that intermediate step towards full automation, cars will handle the whole driving task for defined time and or situations. As soon as system boundaries are reached, the driver will be asked to take over control again.
This handover of control from highly automated driving can be a hard challenge for the driver. First of all a totally distracted driver should be detached from his active task. After that he should recognize the traffic situation as fast as possible, followed by actions to take over control again. The available time for these actions depends on the one hand on the sensors of the car and on the other on the driver.
This thesis starts with the basis of theoretical models of the driving task, as well as human driving behavior from which the challenges to face are being derived. On this basis strategies are designed and assembled which support the driver in these situations. The support strategies are designed according to the three phases that have to be carried out in these situations: take over signal, recognition of the traffic situation and lateral guidance assistance after the actual takeover.
The support strategies are tested in three studies in a driving simulator with naive test subjects. By the use of a driving simulator the advantages of early and close to reality testing are taken. By using a takeover signal and thus deactivating the side task a low takeover time was reached. The support in the cognitive phase is carried out by the presentation of situation describing images. The subjective positive aspects of this cognitive support face the effect of longer takeover times, which are caused by the visual focusing of the images. After a successful takeover drivers are supported by the lateral guidance system, which especially for the first seconds leads to a significant influence on lateral guidance performance
Factors that Influence Citizen Participation in Devolved Funds in Uasin Gishu County, Kenya
The important role that devolved funds plays in Kenya’s development process is recognised. The overall image that emerges from the literature on devolved funds is on importance, absorptive capacities, and allocative rationale and governance issues surrounding the
operations of the funds. However, conceptual awareness on the factors that influence citizen participation in devolved schemes is not known. The main objective of the study is to examine the factors that influence citizen participation in devolved funds in Uasin Gishu (UG) County, Kenya. Specifically, the study examined the socio-demographic characteristics, the social institutions, and the devolved funds design influence on citizen participation in the funds. It further sought to determine the proportion of households participating in the funds, draw lessons of experience on the funds, what does and does not work, where, why and under what conditions, and identify policy options and appropriate program designs to improve the funds.
The study draws from institutional theory to analyse participation because institutions provide frames of meaning which guide human action. Building on the theory, the study developed a conceptual framework to describe concepts guiding the study. The framework explains graphically the main things studied and the presumed relationships among them.
The study area is in Kenya, a country with devolved form of government. Fieldwork was located in UG County. Primary data was gathered through expert interviews with 32 funds officials and household survey with 530 respondents. Further data was obtained from secondary sources. Data from expert interviews was analysed using thematic analysis, survey data was analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), while data from secondary sources was analysed by documentary review.
Results indicate that community participation in the funds occur in the identification of projects, allocation of funds, operation of programmes, access to benefits, as well as the monitoring and evaluation of programmes. Socio-demographic factors including gender, age, education and residence; and social institutions including educational, religious, family, financial and media influence citizen participation in devolved funds. The devolved schemes are not necessarily pro-poor as is the intension. Further research is needed to delineate which kind of design and implementation characteristics could increase participation in the devolved fund
How does social distance influence behavior at the individual level and the group level? A story through experimental economics
The question of which personal factor(s) interfere with people’s behavior in real life that results in the outcomes differing greatly from predicted theories has been partly answered by social science. Yet people are analyzing decisions and the decision making process to go deeper than the surface, human beings are more complicated than self-interested creatures. Game-theorists have found a number of experimental evidence that does not end up in the equilibria and built up different theories to reason their observations. Prisoners in the Prisoners’ Dilemma do not always defect (Dal Bo P 2005); Dictators do not take all the money in a Dictator’s Game (Charness and Gneezy 2008) – this fact started to give researchers the benefit of the doubt.
The purpose of this book is to propose factors tested by theory and experimental evidence to introduce the readers to what potentially change their behavior and observe its implication on others’ behavior. It also cites a number of definitions and ideas of other researchers so as to provide the audience with a different scientific point of view in the most comprehensible way. There are real life examples in addition to theories to connect dots and help the audience to associate themselves when they read through, thus makes it more approachable to less technical readers. The logic goes as follows: through observation of different individuals and cultures, a series of thoughts are discussed with colleagues and other scientists, a small group of factors are believed to cause shocks in behavior and have an impact on the decision making process. When conjectures are formed, experimental methods are designed to accommodate the theory and test the expected variables (now that the invisible factors have been formalized in certain conditions known as treatments). The book covers from an individual concept like “social distance” (the degree of reciprocity that subjects believe exist within a social interaction – Hoffman et al. 1999) to a broader one like the problem of corruption with evidence and comparison of diverse samples. Some may argue that the design of the first experiment somehow interferes with the impact of reputation rather than social distance. Due to L Cabral (2005), names carry the signature of our past behavior, thus are connected to reputation. However, reputation is built through updating a Baysian belief. Within the scope of a one-shot game, the use of full name may very well reasoned to be associated with social distance because there are no more than one period. Thus, subjects can not build their reputation and benefit from it in an economic sense. Readers can enjoy a gentle walk through the hypothesis with detailed information of the design,

the setup, data analysis and discussion of three main factors that is believe to interfere with behavior: social distance, corruption as a maximization problem and grouping effect. The book is structured as follows: the first chapter discusses the general framework and the reasons for which the hypotheses are formed and tested. The second chapter introduces how social distance affects behavior in a public good game and if culture plays an important role. The third chapter debates corruption when people’s social distance varies. The fourth chapter finds impacts of social distance on a group of people, known as grouping effect when people belong to different natural or social groups. They are linked together to serve as a big picture of how social distance interacts with other situations and results in different outcomes. However, these chapters can be read individually without any loss of generality. Chapter five includes the overall discussion of the findings and how to apply them into real life for better social outcome
