    The amount of text available for analysis by marketing researchers has grownexponentially in the last two decades. Consumer reviews, message board forums,and social media feeds are just a few sources of data about consumer thought,interaction, and culture. However, written language is filled with complex meaning,ambiguity, and nuance. How can marketing researchers possibly transformthis rich linguistic representation into quantifiable data for statistical analysis andmodeling? This chapter provides an introduction to text analysis, coveringapproaches that range from top-down deductive methods to bottom-up inductivemethods for text mining. After covering some foundational aspects of textanalysis, applications to marketing research such as sentiment analysis, topicmodeling, and studying organizational communication are summarized andexplored, including a case study of word-of-mouth response to a product launc

    The purpose of this chapter is to explore the beginnings of modern management bytracing the development of nineteenth-century management thought in Europe.Weexamine the lives of Owen, Babbage, Ure, and Fayol, noting both their contributionsand the limitations of their thought in their historical context. Our contentionwas that management did not really emerge as a distinct field of study until the timeof Taylor. Namely that the industrial world was too new, thought to be a fad thatlimited the intellectual development of management. In addition, Ure and Babbagewere polymaths, devoted to fields which limited their management contributions.Fayol was compared with Taylor, which limited his appeal, even though both menwrote about different aspects. Although there are themes of modern managementin the work of Owen and others, various issues prevented them (either thelimitations of their thought or other circumstances) from being the prime mover
