System software for energy-efficient computing
The demand for computing performance in computer systems is rising sharply, driven in particular by the enormous resource hunger of machine learning and artificial intelligence. Energy efficiency plays a key role in the performance, operational costs, and sustainability of such systems. It is substantially influenced by the operating system and system software, which act as intermediaries between hardware and application software.
This thesis presents, implements, and evaluates three system software components: Nexis, for determining and attributing the energy demand to the responsible software; PolarBears, for optimising the system configuration for energy efficiency at run time; and GreenPipe, for supporting the development of energy-efficient software. Taken together, these components form a comprehensive framework for the development and operation of energy-efficient computer systems

A toaster in the bathroom
When recalling what you ate for breakfast last Wednesday, you might not remember the exact meal, but you may confidently select the items you typically eat. Here, semantic knowledge (i.e., what you usually eat) contributes to the reconstructive process of episodic memory retrieval (i.e., what you actually ate). In the current fMRI study, we used a highly realistic virtual environment to test this influence of semantic knowledge on episodic memory retrieval. During the task, 60 participants actively (task-relevant) or passively (task-irrelevant) encountered everyday objects that were either congruent (i.e., rubber duck in the bathroom) or incongruent (i.e., a toaster in the bathroom) with their expected location. Thereby, we created conflicting information between the episodic memory trace (toaster in the bathroom) and semantic information (toaster in the kitchen) during retrieval. Using multivariate analyses, we analyzed the neural basis of this semantic bias. Further, we administered cortisol, typically associated with impaired episodic memory retrieval, to half of the participants prior to retrieval, thereby manipulating the balance between correct episodic and incorrect semantic retrieval. In the lateral occipital cortex (LOC), incongruent task-relevant objects showed greater similarity to their congruent semantic counterparts than did task-irrelevant objects. Notably, spatial memory tended to be reflected in similarity patterns in the LOC. Strikingly, incongruent objects showed a higher pattern reorganization (i.e., pre-/post-encoding similarity) compared to congruent objects, reflecting a difference in neural representation for objects encountered in conflict with prior knowledge. In contrast to our hypotheses, cortisol prior to retrieval had no effect on semantic bias. However, cortisol influenced neural pattern similarity: we found higher pattern reorganization within the posterior hippocampus in the cortisol group. Similarly, we found higher confidence to be linked with similarity patterns in the LOC and lingual gyrus in the placebo, but not in the cortisol group. This indicates an effect of cortisol on memory trace reinstatement during retrieval. Our findings on incongruent object processing contribute to the understanding of how the human brain constructs past episodes from episodic memory traces, suggesting an influence of prior semantic knowledge, reflected in neural similarity patterns
A three-dimensional / one-dimensional seamlessly coupled simulation method for cavitating flow in pumps and their piping
On the effect of the patient table on attenuation in myocardial perfusion imaging SPECT
The topic of the effect of the patient table on attenuation in myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) SPECT is gaining new relevance due to deep learning methods. Existing studies on this effect are old, rare and only consider phantom measurements, not patient studies. This study investigates the effect of the patient table on attenuation based on the difference between reconstructions of phantom scans and polar maps of patient studies.
Jaszczak phantom scans are acquired according to quality control and MPI procedures. An algorithm is developed to automatically remove the patient table from the CT for attenuation correction. The scans are then reconstructed with attenuation correction either with or without the patient table in the CT. The reconstructions are compared qualitatively and on the basis of their percentage difference. In addition, a small retrospective cohort of 15 patients is examined by comparing the resulting polar maps. Polar maps are compared qualitatively and based on the segment perfusion scores.
The phantom reconstructions look qualitatively similar in both the quality control and MPI procedures. The percentage difference is highest in the lower part of the phantom, but it always remains below 17.5%. Polar maps from patient studies also look qualitatively similar. Furthermore, the segment scores are not significantly different (=0.83).
The effect of the patient table on attenuation in MPI SPECT is negligible
Multi-messenger modeling of blazar spectral energy distributions
The origin of the extragalactic neutrino flux detected by IceCube remains unknown. This thesis investigates blazars as potential neutrino sources through multi-messenger modeling. For PKS 0735+178, a model explains its flaring activity but reveals strong parameter degeneracies that hinder robust neutrino predictions. For VER J0521+211, day-scale TeV variability is reproduced with one-zone leptohadronic models. The possible blazar contribution to the neutrino excess near NGC 4151 is also estimated. The work examines how limited data produce degeneracies in one-zone models and compares optimization methods for exploring their parameter spaces. Finally, using a large blazar sample, the thesis shows that slowly accreting supermassive black holes launch relativistic jets more efficiently, a result confirmed through an independent approach
Postnatal surgical complications in lower urinary tract obstruction following fetal vesico- amniotic shunting
Fetal lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO) is a rare congenital disease associated with high morbidity and mortality due to pulmonary hypoplasia and renal insufficiency. Fetal management includes early vesicoamniotic shunting (VAS), a technique that has evolved in recent years to preserve kidney function. Previous publications have focused on intrauterine shunt complications, such as dislocation and preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM). In our study we aimed to assess postnatal shunt related complications that became obvious after birth.
We describe our preliminary experience with 25 fetuses who underwent VAS with a Somatex® shunt as well as postnatal shunt removal at two experienced centers for fetal medicine. The intrauterine course, underlying pathology, postnatal outcome and details on shunt explantation and related complications were assessed. The data were retrospectively analysed in relation to the intrauterine course, underlying pathology, further malformations, and perioperative characteristics with a focus on the complication spectrum and type of intervention.
Twenty-five fetuses underwent VAS at a median of 17 weeks. Two newborns were excluded because they died within the first 24 hours of life secondary to fulminant lung hypoplasia. In ten (43%) newborns, shunt removal was performed under local anaesthesia. In 13 (57%) neonates, the shunt was explanted surgically, and five (22%) of these operations were defined as complex.
Intrauterine VAS with a Somatex® shunt is feasible, and in the majority of cases, shunt explantation can be easily performed after birth. However, the umbrellas may cause intraabdominal tissue damage, peritoneal adhesions or skin defects, and early surgical management of VAS associated complications might be necessary
Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) for room exploration using ultrawideband millimeterwave FMCW tadar
Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) of indoor scenarios is usually based on camera or lidar sensors as data sources. However, radar based room scanning offers several complementary advantages to these systems. Among other features, radar sensors are more robust to optical opacities, for example, those caused by smoke and dust in emergency scenarios or in harsh environments. Furthermore, the coherent measurement principle of radar sensors provides highly precise distance information that can be utilized to track the exact position and dimensions of the visible objects. In contrast to camera and lidar, radar applications in room exploration are up to now limited by reduced spatial, i.e. mostly angular/lateral, resolution. This is due to the comparably large wavelength of the utilized signals. This work demonstrates the capabilities of ultrawideband millimeterwave Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar sensors operating around 80 GHz in conjunction with the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging method. To allow imaging whilst moving, self-localization techniques based on sub-aperture processing are evaluated. Therefore, we demonstrate a detailed mapping procedure for room exploration applications by exploiting large absolute bandwidths of more than 20 GHz with high resolution imaging techniques on a mobile robot platform
