    The Effectiveness of Scaffolding Technique on Students' Writing Analytical Expository Text

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi keefektifan teknik scaffolding terhadap kemampuan menulis eksposisi analitis siswa. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain eksperimental. Subyek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas dua sekolah menengah atas dengan jumlah peserta adalah 35 siswa. Tes menulis digunakan sebagai instrumen untuk memperoleh data. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan Repeated Measure t-test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa scaffolding secara signifikan dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa dengan tingkat signifikansi 0.05.Hal ini menandakan bahwa teknik scaffolding dapat diterapkan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan menulis siswa.  This paper reports the study investigating the effectiveness of scaffolding technique on the students’ analytical writing achievement. This study is quantitative research with the experimental design. The subjects of this research were the second-grade students of senior high school with 35 students in total.The writing test was used as the instrument to elicit the data. The data were analyzed by using Repeated Measure t-test.The results showed that scaffolding significantly improved the students’ writing achievement with the significant level 0.05.     The Influence of Think-Talk-Write Technique to Improve Students' Descriptive Writing at the First Grade of Senior High School

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti: i) peningkatan kemampuan menulis teks deskriptif siswa melalui penerapan teknik Think-Talk-Write dan ii) aspek menulis yang paling meningkat. Penelitian ini adalah kuasi-eksperimental dengan one-group pretest-posttest design. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas X IPA 6 di SMA Al Azhar 3 Bandar Lampung yang terdiri atas 34 siswa. Data penelitian ini diperoleh melalui pre test dan post test. Kemudian, data tersebut dianalisis dengan menggunakan Paired Sample T-test. Nilai rata-rata yang diperoleh dalam pre test adalah 54.83 dan nilai rata-rata yang diperoleh dalam post test adalah 64.95. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa pencapaian murid terhadap skill menulis deskriptif text meningkat secara statistik dengan level signifikansi 0.05. Ini menunjukkan bahwa teknik Think-Talk-Write membantu siswa dalam meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa. This research was aimed at investigating: i) the students’ improvement on writing descriptive text after the students were taught through Think-Talk-Write technique and ii) the aspect of writing improves the most. This study was quasi-experimental research with one-group pretest-posttest design of pre-experimental design. The subject of this research was class X IPA 6 of SMA Al Azhar 3 Bandar Lampung consisting of 34 students. The data were obtained from the pre test and post test. Then, the data were analyzed by using Paired Sample T-test. The average score of the pre-test was 54.83 and the average score of the post-test was 64.95. The results showed that the students’ achievement on writing descriptive text statistically increased with the significant level 0.05.     The Implementation of Wh-Question Technique to Increase Students’ Reading Comprehension Ability of Narrative Text at The Second Grade SMAN 2 Tulang Bawang Udik

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan perbedaan kemampuan membaca siswa setelah diajar dengan teknik wh-question. Pendekatan penelitian ini adalah penelitian kuantitatif. Tes membaca digunakan sebagai instrumen pengambilan data. Subyek penelitian ini adalah 60 siswa kelas sebelas SMAN 2 Tulang Bawang Udik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa secara statistik terdapat peningkatan yang signifikan dalam kemampuan membaca siswa setelah siswa diajarkan menggunakan teknik wh-question. Berdasarkan hasil ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa teknik wh-question adalah teknik yang efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca siswa. The aim of this study was to find out whether the use of the wh-question technique improved the students’ reading ability. This study was a quantitative study. Reading tests were used as the instrument to elicit the data. The subjects of this research were 60 second grade students of SMAN 2 Tulang Bawang Udik. The result showed the students who were taught through wh-question technique had better achievement and the difference was statistically significant.     The Effect of Teachers Indirect Feedback on Writing at SMA Al-Azhar 3

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti apakah ada perbedaan pada kemampuan siswa dalam kemampuan pemahaman menulis teks deskriptif setelah belajar melalui teknik teachers indirect feedback. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kuantitatif. Sampel penelitian adalah siswa kelas X IPA 2 di SMA Al-Azhar 3 Bandar Lampung. Tes menulis digunakan sebagai alat untuk pengambilan data. Data dianalisa menggunakan SPSS version 16.0 software program. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa adanya peningkatan signifikan pada kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif dengan tingkat signifikansi 0.00<0.05. Hasil selanjutnya menunjukkan bahwa mekanik merupakan aspek menulis yang paling meningkat. Dapat disarankan bahwa teknik teachers indirect feedback memudahkan siswa meningkatkan prestasi menulis.The objective of this research was to investigate whether there is a statistically significant difference of the students writing descriptive texts after the implementation of teachers indirect feedback. This research was quantitative research. The subjects of the research were 25 students of X IPA 2 of SMA Al-Azhar 3 Bandar Lampung. The writing test was used to collect the data. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 16.0 software program. The result showed that there was a statistically significant improvement of the students writing of descriptive text with the significant level 0.00<0.05. Pendekatan penelitian ini adalah kuantitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 30 siswa tingkat kedua SMA. Tes membaca digunakan sebagai alat pengumpulan data. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan Repeated Measure t-test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan signifikan pada kemampuan membaca siswa antara pre-test dan post-test dengan tinggat signifikansi 0.05. Hal ini menandakan bahwa teknik TPS dapat diterapkan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan pemahaman membaca siswa.The objectives of the research were to find out whether there was a statistically significant difference of the students’ reading comprehension achievement between the pre-test and post-test in the implementation of TPS technique. The approach of the research was quantitative. The subjects were 30 students of the second grade of SMA. The data were collected through the reading test.     The Use of Authentic Material in Increasing Students’ Ability in Writing Descriptive Text at the Second Grade of SMPN 8 Bandar Lampung

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti i) apakah ada peningkatan signifikan pada keterampilan pemahaman menulis siswa sebelum dan setelah penerapan authentic material ii) aspek menulis yang paling meningkat setelah penerapan authentic material. Pendekatan penelitian ini adalah kuantitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 30 siswa tingkat kedua SMP. Tes menulis digunakan sebagai alat pengumpulan data. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan Repeated Measure t-test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan signifikan pada kemampuan menulis siswa dengan tinggat signifikansi 0.05. Isi adalah aspek menulis yang paling meningkat setelah penerapan authentic material. Hal ini menandakan bahwa authentic material dapat diterapkan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan menulis siswa.Kata Kunci: Menulis, Descriptive Text, Authentic Material. The objectives of this research were to investigate whether there was statisfically significant improvement of the students’ ability in writing descriptive texts after being taught through the authentic materials. Furthermore, content is the aspect of writing improves the most after the implementation of authentic materials.     The Effect Of Corrective Feedback Towards Students Speaking Performance Related To Learning Style

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi sampai sejauh apa siswa yang memiliki perbedaan gaya belajar mendapat keuntungan dari feedback. Subyek penelitian adalah siswa Program Diploma Lembaga Bahasa Inggris (LBI) Bandar Lampung. Penelitian ini mengambil 15 siswa sebagai subyek penelitian. Data diambil dengan menggunakan tes lisan dan dinilai oleh dua interrater. Klasifikasi gaya belajar siswa ditentukan dengan menggunakan Kuesioner Gaya Belajar milik Willing (1988) Siswa-siswa diminta untuk memproduksi kalimat secara lisan berdasarkan seri gambar dalam bentuk simple present tense dan simple past tense. Hasil penelitian menemukan bahwa pembelajar konkrit mendapat keuntungan lebih banyak dari feedback yang bersifat mengoreksi dibandingkan gaya belajar yang lain sementara siswa dengan gaya belajar yang berorientasi otoritas mendapat keuntungan paling sedikit.This research was intended to identify to what extent students with different learning style benefitted from corrective feedback. The subjects of the study were the students of Diploma program of Lembaga Bahasa Inggris (LBI) Bandar Lampung. This study took 15 students as the subject of the research. The data were taken by using oral tests scored by two interraters. The classification of the students learning styles was done based on Willings Learning Style Questionnaire (1988). The students were asked to make oral production based on series of pictures in simple present tense and simple past tense. The result found that concrete learners gained more benefit from corrective feedback than the other learning styles while the authority-oriented learners gained very little from corrective feedback.Keywords: Corrective feedback, learning style, speaking

    Improving Students' Speaking Achievement through Video

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada i) peningkatan yang signifikan dalam pencapaian berbicara siswa setelah penerapan media video, ii) respon siswa terhadap pembelajaran menggunakan video. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kuantitatif. Sampel penelitian ini adalah 30 siswa tingkat kedua SMA. Pre-tes dan pos-tes dilakukan untuk mengumpulkan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa adanya peningkatan yang signifikan dalam pencapaian berbicara siswa setelah penerapan media video dangan tingkat signifikan 0.00. Ini menunjukan bahwa media video dapat membantu siswa menigkatkan pencapaian berbicara mereka. Mayoritas siswa juga memberikan respon yang positif terhadap pembelajaran berbicara melalui video.  This research was aimed at finding out whether there i) was statistically significant improvement of students’ speaking achievement after the implementation of media of video,ii) the students’ responses on learning speaking through video. This research was quantitative research. The subjects of this research were 30 students of the second year of SMA. Speaking tests in the forms of the pre-test and the post-test were employed to collect the data. The results showed that there was statistically significant improvement of the students’ speaking achievement after the implementation of video with the significant level 0.00. This indicates that media of video help students improve their speaking achievement.The majority of students also showed that they gave positive responses on the process of teaching speaking through video. Keywords: improving, speaking, video

    An analysis of students' grammatical errors in their descriptive writing

    Abstrak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mencari tahu i) jenis kesalahan yang siswa buat yang tergolong surface strategy taxonomy dan communicative effect taxonomy dalam menulis karangan deskriptif, serta ii) menyelidiki jenis kesalahan yang sering dan jarang muncul pada karangan siswa tersebut. Penelitian ini bersifat qualitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 29 siswa kelas XI IPA1 dari SMA Yadika Bandar Lampung. Tes menulis digunakan sebagai instrumen penelitian. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa siswa membuat semua jenis kesalahan dari surface strategy taxonomy, yaitu omission, addition, misformation, and misordering; maupun communicative effect taxonomy, yaitu kesalahan global dan lokal. Dalam surface strategy taxonomy, jenis kesalahan yang sering muncul adalah misformation; dan jenis yang jarang muncul adalah misordering. Dalam communicative effect taxonomy, jenis kesalahan yang dominan adalah kesalahan lokal, sedangkan kesalahan global merupakan jenis kesalahan yang jarang terjadi.Abstract. This study aimed at finding out i) the types of error that learners committed in terms of surface strategy and communicative effect taxonomies in their descriptive writing; and ii) the types of errors the students most and least frequently used in their writing on the basis of both taxonomies. This study was a qualitative research. The subjects were 29 learners of class XI IPA 1 of SMA Yadika Bandar Lampung. The writing test was used as the instrument. The findings revealed that the learners committed all error types in terms of surface strategy taxonomy: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering; and communicative effect taxonomy: global and local errors. In terms of surface strategy taxonomy, misformation was the most frequent error type the students committed, while misordering was the least frequent error type. In terms of communicative effect taxonomy, the most dominant error type was local errors; while the least frequent error type was global errors.Keywords: communicative effect taxonomy, descriptive writing, surface strategy taxonom

    The Correlation of Students’ Critical Reading Strategies and Their Reading Comprehension Achievement at The Second Grade of SMKN 1 Kotabumi

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan: i) hubungan antara strategi membaca kritis siswa dengan keterampilan pemahaman membaca mereka, dan ii) aspek – aspek pemahaman membaca apa yg berhubungan secara signifikan dengan strategi membaca kritis siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 30 siswa tingkat kedua SMKN 1 Kotabumi, Lampung Utara. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam  penelitian ini adalah kuesioner dan tes pemahaman membaca. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa secara statistik ada hubungan yang signifikan  antara strategi membaca kritis siswa dengan pemahaman membaca mereka. Selain itu, aspek inferensi, menentukan ide pokok, dan mengidentifikasi informasi di dalam teks secara statistik memiliki hubungan yang signifikan dengan strategi membaca kritis siswa. Ini menunjukkan bahwa strategi membaca kritis memfasilitasi siswa untuk meningkatan kemampuan membaca mereka. The objectives of this research were to find out: i) the correlation between the students’ critical reading strategies and their reading comprehension achievement and ii)  which aspects of reading comprehension significantly correlate with students’ critical reading strategies. This research was quantitative research. The subjects of this research were 30 students of SMKN 1 Kotabumi, North Lampung. The data were collected through questionnaire and reading comprehension test. The result showed that there was a statistically significant correlation between the students’ critical reading strategies and their reading comprehension achievement. Furthermore, reading aspects in terms of inference, determining main idea, and identifying specific information of the text had a statistically significant correlation with the students’ critical reading strategies.
