    AN ERROR ANALYSIS IN RECOUNT TEXT WRITING MADE BY THE SECOND GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP MUHAMMADIYAH BANDAR LAMPUNG

    Penelitian ditujukan untuk mencari jenis kesalahan dan frekuensi terjadinya kesalahan berdasarkan Surface Strategy Taxonomy dan Communicative Effect Taxonomy yang terdapat pada recount teks siswa dan juga untuk mencari jenis kesalahan yang paling banyak dibuat oleh siswa. Subyek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas dua SMP Muhammadiyah Bandar Lampung. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan writing task sebagai instrumen. Terdapat lima jenis kesalahan pada tulisan recount teks siswa berdasarkan Surface Strategy Taxonomy dan terdapat dua jenis kesalahan berdasarkan Communicative Effect Taxonomy, yaitu Global Error dan Local Error. Special error dan Local error merupakan jenis kesalahan yang paling banyak di buat oleh siswa di recount teks.Kata kunci: kesalahan, analisakesalahan, tulisan recount teks, siswa kelas dua, Taksonomi kesalahanThis research was aimed at finding out i) types of errors andthe frequencies of occurrence of the Surface Strategy Taxonomy and Communicative Effect Taxonomy found in the students recount texts, and ii) types of errors which are most frequently made by the students. There are five types of errors made in students recount texts based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy, and two types of errors made by the students based on Communicative Effect Taxonomy Global Error and Local Error.     The Implementation of Roundtable Technique in Improving Students’ Writing of Descriptive Text

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti apakah ada peningkatan signifikan pada keterampilan pemahaman menulis siswa setelah penerapan teknik roundtable selama lima kali pertememuan. Pendekatan penelitian ini adalah kuantitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 29 siswa tingkat pertama sekolah menengah atas. Tes menulis digunakan sebagai alat pengumpulan data. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan Repeated Measure t-test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan signifikan pada kemampuan menulis siswa dengan tingkat signifikansi 0.05. Hal ini menandakan bahwa teknik roundtable dapat diterapkan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan menulis siswa.The objectives of this research were to find out whether there was a statistically significant difference of students’ writing ability after the students were taught through roundtable technique for five meetings. The approach of the research was quantitative. The subjects were 29 students of the first grade of senior high school. The writing tests were used as the research instrument. The data were analyzed by using Repeated Measure t-test. The result showed that there was a statically significant difference of the students’ writing ability with the significant level 0.05.     The Effectiveness of Scaffolding Technique on Students' Writing Analytical Expository Text

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi keefektifan teknik scaffolding terhadap kemampuan menulis eksposisi analitis siswa. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain eksperimental.Subyek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas dua sekolah menengah atas dengan jumlah peserta adalah 35 siswa. Tes menulis digunakan sebagai instrumen untuk memperoleh data. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakanRepeated Measure t-test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa scaffolding secara signifikan dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa dengan tingkat signifikansi 0.05. Hal ini menandakan bahwa teknik scaffolding dapat diterapkan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan menulis siswa.Kata Kunci: teknik scaffolding, eksposisi analitik, kemampuan menulis. This paper reports the study investigating the effectiveness of scaffolding technique on the students’ analytical writing achievement. This study is quantitative research with the experimental design. The subjects of this research were the second-grade students of senior high school with 35 students in total.The writing test was used as the instrument to elicit the data. The data were analyzed by using Repeated Measure t-test.The results showed that scaffolding significantly improved the students’ writing achievement with the significant level 0.05.     Improving Students’ Reading Ability Through ASK, READ and TELL (ART) In Cooperative Learning

    Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mencari tahu 1) Adakah perbedaan pada kemampuan membaca siswa setelah di ajar menggunakan ART in cooperative learning, 2) Manakah yang lebih baik antara ART in cooperative learning atau ART saja, 3) Aspek membaca manakah yang meningkat lebih baik dan 4) Bagaimana persepsi siswa tentang ART in cooperative learning.  Dua kelas digunakan sebagai sample penelitian ini.  Instrumen yang digunakan adalah tes membaca dan wawancara.  Instrumen yang digunakan valid reliabel berdasarkan validitas isi, validitas konstrak, split half dan antar rater.  T-test digunakan untuk menganalisa data.  Hasil pretest dan postest menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan antara kemampuan membaca siswa sebelum dan sesudah diajar menggunakan ART in cooperative learning.   Peningkatan yang signifikan terlihat pada kelas eksperimen.  Aspek membaca yang paling berkembang adalah mengidentifikasi ide pokok.  Berdasarkan interview, ART in cooperative membuat siswa senang dalam membaca karena mereka dapat bertukar pikiran dengan teman mereka.  Guru disarankan menggunakan ART in cooperative learning dalam mengajarkan membaca.The objectives of this research were : 1) to find out whether  there is any difference of students’ reading ability after being taught through ART in cooperative learning, 2) to find out which one is better, ART in cooperative learning or original ART, 3) to find out what aspect of reading improved better, 4) to describe the students’ perception of ART in cooperative learning.  Two classes were used as the sample of this study.  The instruments of this study were reading test and interview.  The instruments were valid and reliable based on content validity, construct validity, spilt half and interrater.  T-test was used to analyze the data. The results of the pretest and posttest were that there was different score after being taught by ART in cooperative learning.  Significant improvement was seen from the experiment class.  The aspect which was influenced the most was identifying main idea.  Based on the interview, ART in cooperative learning made students enjoyable because they could share their ideas with their friends.  The researcher suggests the teacher should use ART in cooperative learning in teaching reading. Keywords : ART,  cooperative learning, reading.

    The Study of Speech Act Sets of Refusal on Indonesian Students Speaking English

    Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah ada perbedaan produksi ujaran dalam menolak undangan antara siswa yang memiliki kemampuan Bahasa Inggris yang tinggi dan rendah. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan purposive sampling. Sasaran penelitian ini adalah 4 siswa dengan nilai IELTS lebih dari atau sama dengan 6.5 dan 4 siswa dengan nilai IELTS kurang dari atau sama dengan 5. Tes berbicara dengan metode roleplay digunakan sebagai alat pengambilan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa dengan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris yang tinggi mampu memproduksi ujaran yang lebih bervariasi dalam menolak undangan dan mampu menggunakan strategi penolakan yang berbeda dalam situasi sosial yang berbeda.The aim of this study was to find out whether there was a difference of speech act set of refusal between high proficiency and low proficiency students. This research was qualitative research using purposive sampling. The subjects were 5 students who have 6.5 IELTS score or higher and 5 students who have 5 IELTS score or lower. Speaking test and roleplay method were used to collect the data. The result of this research showed that high proficiency students produce more uterances to express refusal than the those with low proficiency. This indicates that higher proficiency students produce various uterances in the different social contexts.Keywords: speech act, refusal, high proficiency, low proficiency

    An Analysis of Students Errors In Recount Text Writing at The Second Grade Students of SMP Muhammadiyah Bandar Lampung

    Tujuan penelitian yaitu untuk mencari jenis kesalahan yang terjadi berdasarkan surface strategy taxonomy dan developmental category yang terdapat pada teks recount siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan writing task sebagai instrumen. Subyek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas dua SMP Muhammadiyah Bandar Lampung. Hasil penelitian menunjukan terdapat lima jenis kesalahan berdasarkan surface strategy taxonomy: 1) addition, 2) misordering, 3) omission, 4) misformation dan 5) blend error. Selanjutnya, terdapat tiga jenis tingkatan kesalahan yaitu 1) pre-systematic stage, 2) systematic stage dan 3) post-sytematic stage. Blend error adalah jenis kesalahan yang acapkali dibuat siswa. Tingkatan kesalahan yang acapkali terjadi yaitu, systematic stage, lalu post-systematic stage dan pre systematic stage. Disarankan untuk para guru Bahasa Inggris untuk memberi perhatian lebih terhadap kesalahan siswa, dengan memberikan siswa banyak latihan.The aim of this research was to find out types of errors which are made by the students based on surface strategy taxonomy and developmental category that are found in the students recount texts. This research was conducted through a descriptive qualitative approach by using a writing task as the research instrument. The subjects of this research were the second grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Bandar Lampung, in amount 20 students. The result showed there are five types of error based on surface strategy taxonomy: i) addition, ii) misordering, iii) omission, iv) misformation and v) blenderrors. Furthermore, there are threetypes of stages of errors, namely i) pre-systematic stage, ii) systematic stage and iii) post-sytematic Stage. Blend errors were the most frequently made by the students.     A Comparative Study of Teachers Questioning Types Between Social and Science Class in SMA

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis pertanyaan yang paling umum diajukan oleh guru di SMAN 2 Bandar Lampung dan mengetahui tujuan pedagogis guru dalam mengajukan pertanyaan. Data penelitian ini adalah transkrip dari proses belajar mengajar di kelas 11 SMAN 2 Bandar Lampung. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa knowledge questions adalah pertanyaan yang paling sering diajukan guru, dibanding jenis pertanyaan lain.Strategi guru dalam mengajukan pertanyaan masih menggunakan cara tradisioal, Maka, guru disarankan untuk mengajukan pertanyaan kognitif atau perpaduan antara pertanyaan level rendah & level tinggi.The objectives of this research were i) to explore the most common questioning forms used by the teacher at SMAN 2 Bandar Lampung and ii) the differences between the teachers questions in Science and Social classes. The main data were the transcription of English classes in SMAN 2 Bandar Lampung. The results of the research show that knowledge questions have the highest frequency in total number of teachers questions. The difference between Science and Social classes was the use of statements with questioning intonation. The teachers strategy of offering questionswas asking the whole class most of the questions. Therefore, the finding suggests that the teacher asks cognitive type question or combination of low-level and high level cognitive questionsKeywords: classroom interaction, teacher question, questioning types

    Improving Students' Reading Comprehension in Narrative Text through Picture Series

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada i) peningkatan pada kemampuan membaca siswa dalam Teks Naratif setelah diajar dengan menggunakan Picture Series, dan ii) respon siswa terhadap penggunaan Picture Series dalam pembelajaran reading Teks Naratif. One group pretest and posttest design adalah desain yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Data penelitian diperoleh melalui pretest, posttest, dan questionnaire. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa ada peningkatan yang signifikan pada kemampuan membaca siswa setelah diajar menggunakan picture series dengan tingkat significan 0.05. Sehingganya, dapat disarankan bahwa picture series sebagai media memfasilitasi siswa untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca pada Teks Naratif.This research was aimed to find out i) whether there was improvement in students’ reading comprehension in narrative text after being taught by using picture series, and ii) students’ responses of picture series in teaching reading narrative texts. One group pretest and posttest design was used in this research. The data were obtained from pre-test, post-test, and questionnaires.     Modified Cooperative Integrated Reading Comprehension through Genre Based Approach to Promote Students' Reading Achievement

    Penelitian ini menyelidiki apakah ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam pemahaman membaca siswa antara siswa yang diajar dengan menggunakan Genre –Based Cooperative Integrated Reading Comprehension (GBCIRC) dan mereka yang menggunakan Cooperative Integrated Reading Comprehension (CIRC), dan persepsi mereka terhadap GBCIRC. Penelitian ini menerapkan desain eksperimen yang sebenarnya. Terdapat 32 siswa dalam kelompok eksperimental dan 32 siswa dalam kontrol sebagai sampel yang dipilih secara acak di SMAN 1 Seputih Mataram. Untuk mengumpulkan data, tes, dan kuesioner digunakan. Data dari tes dianalisis dengan SPSS menghasilkan nilai signifikansi yang lebih rendah dari taraf signifikansi (0,00<0,05) yang berarti bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan pada kemampuan membaca siswa antara Genre –Based Cooperative Integrated Reading Comprehension (GBCIRC) dan Cooperative Integrated Reading Comprehension (CIRC). Selanjutnya, data dari kuesioner menghasilkan siswa memberikan persepsi positif  terhadap implementasi GBCIRC. Oleh karena itu, GBCIRC lebih baik untuk digunakan dan dapat meningkatkan pencapaian pemahaman siswa.This research investigated whether there is any significant difference in students’ reading comprehension between students who taught by using Genre-Based Cooperative Integrated Reading Comprehension (GBCIRC) and those who taught by using Cooperative Integrated Reading Comprehension (CIRC), and their perceptions towards GBCIRC. This study applied the true experimental design. There were 32 experimental students and 32 control students as the sample chosen randomly at SMAN 1 Seputih Mataram. To collect the data, test, and questionnaire were employed. Data from the test were analyzed with SPSS resulting significance value that was lower than Sig level (0.00˂0.05) meaning that there is a significant difference between students who taught by using Genre-Based Cooperative Integrated Reading Comprehension (GBCIRC) and those who taught by using Cooperative Integrated Reading Comprehension (CIRC). Furthermore, data from the questionnaire were analyzed with descriptive statistic resulting that the students perceived positively towards the implementation of GBCIRC.     The Application of Drta Technique in Increasing Students Reading Comprehension in Narrative Text

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti: i) peningkatan kemampuan pemahaman membaca siswa melalui penerapan teknik DRTA dan ii) respon siswa terhadap penerapan teknik DRTA. Data diperoleh dari pre-test, post-test dan kuesioner. Teknik analisis data menggunakan Paired Sample t-test. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa terdapat peningkatan signifikan secara statistik pada pencapaian pemahaman membaca siswa dengan tingkat signifikan 0.00 (<0.05). Hasil dari kuesioner menunjukkan bahwa respons siswa dalam penerapan Teknik DRTA sangat baik. Kebanyakan dari siswa tersebut sangat setuju bahwa mereka mendapatkan motivasi dan minat dalam membaca teks karena mereka diharuskan memprediksi teks itu terlebih dahulu sebelum membacanya. Bagaimanapun, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa teknik DRTA dapat diterapkan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca siswa.The research was aimed at investigating: i) the students improvement on reading comprehension achievement after the students were taught through DRTA technique and ii) the students responses of the application of DRTA technique. The data were obtained from the pre-test, the post-test, and the questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using Paired Sample t-test. The result showed that there was a statistically significant improvement of the students reading comprehension with the significant level of 0.00 (<0.05). Furthermore, the results of the questionnaire showed that the students responses at the application of DRTA technique were positive. The majority of the students strongly agree that they were well-motivated and indicated high interest in reading the whole texts due to the strategy of the text prediction.
