The implementation of Herringbone technique to improve reading comprehension
The objectives of this research were to find out whether there was a significant difference of the students’ reading comprehension after the implementation of Herringbone technique and to investigate which aspect of reading that improves the most and improves the least after the implementation of the technique. The population of this research was the first grade of SMA Tri Sukses Natar in the academic year 2019/2020. The sample of this research was X science 2 which consisted of 30 students. The data were taken from the tests and they were analyzed by using paired sample t-test. The result showed that there was a significant difference in the students’ reading comprehension of pre-test (61.40) to post-test (72.30) in which t-value>t-table (11.882>2.452) or sig p<0.05 (0.000<0.05). In addition, main idea was the aspect of reading that improved the most after the implementation of the technique and the aspect which improved the least was vocabulary. Based on the result, it can be concluded that Herringbone technique is effective to improve students’ reading comprehension. The effect of online learning through Twitter on students’ writing
This research was aimed to find out whether there is significant difference of students’ writing performance before and after being taught through Twitter and to investigate which aspect improves the most after the implementation of Twitter in online learning situation. Adapting quantitative approach, this research was conducted through one group pre-test and post-test design. The subject of the research were thirty students at Senior High School 1 Bandar Lampung who actively use Twitter in their daily life. The data were elicited through pre-test and post-test in the form of narrative text. The mean of both tests were analyzed using Paired Sample T-test with the significant level of 0.05. The result showed that there was significant difference of students’ writing performance after they were taught through Twitter concerning the gain of their score from the first to the second test. It could be seen from the computation that the significant value of the tests was lower than alpha (0.00<0.05) while the t-value (5.573) was higher than t-table (2.0452). Finally, it can be said that online learning through Twitter can give positive effect on the students’ writing performance. Improving students’ vocabulary achievement after being taught through Flashcard at the second grade of SMP Negeri 1 Palas
The aims of this study were to find out whether Flashcard can be used to improve the students’ achievement of vocabulary significantly, and to find out which aspect of vocabulary improves the most after the students were taught using Flashcard. The achievement of vocabulary is essential in order to construct sentences that contain some messages for social interaction. However, most of SMP N 1 Palas faced problems in understanding the meaning of words. The population of this research was all students of second grade of SMPN 1 Palas in 2019/2020 academic year. The sample of this research was class VIII B of SMPN 1 Palas consisting of 30 students. This instrument of this research was vocabulary test. In this research, the writer administered vocabulary test to find out the students’ achievement of vocabulary. The data were analyzed by using Paired Samples T-test in SPSS 17. The average score of the pre-test is 65.60 and the average score of the post-test is 81.86. It could be concluded that the students’ achievement of vocabulary improved. After they have been taught through flashcard. The aspect of vocabulary that improved the most was noun. This is because most of the word are belong to the word noun that was familiar for the students, so it was not hard for them to learn in the treatment.Keywords: vocabulary achievement, Content word, flashcar
The impact of error correction strategies toward student’s anxiety in speaking
This research aimed to find out (i) how the students’ anxiety in speaking after being corrected through teacher-correction strategy, and (ii) how the students’ anxiety after being corrected through peer-correction strategy. This study was a quantitative which used the one-shot case study design. Then, two sets of questionnaire were used as the research instruments. It was conducted in third grade of Senior High School 1 Belalau. The result shows that the students’ anxiety is lower after being corrected through teacher-correction strategy. Furthermore, the students anxiety is not lower after being corrected by peers. The Use Of News Item On YouTube To Improve Students' Speaking Ability At Grade XII Of SMAN 2 Bandar Lampung
In learning speaking, the students of Senior High School should be able to speak English appropriately. In the real condition, some students of Senior High School found difficulties in speaking English that is caused of some factors. One of the factors was how the teacher delivered the material. The materials were given by the teachers were not interesting. To make them interested and wanted to share their feelings in speaking English, the researcher used news item video as the media in the process of teaching and learning English. The research was intended to find out statistically significant improvement of the students’ speaking ability after they got treatment by using news item video. The subjects of the research were 27 students at SMAN 2 Bandar Lampung. There were three raters who assessed students’ speaking ability. The data were collected through speaking test (pretest and posttest). The paired simple t-test was used to analyze the data collected from both the pretest and posttest. The result showed that the news item video had statistically significant improvement on the students speaking ability with the significant level 0.05. Online learning by using WhatsApp to improve students’ writing achievement in recount rext at the first grade of SMAN 7 Bandar Lampung
The objectives of this research are to find out whether there is any significant improvement on students’ writing achievement by using online learning activity by using WhatsApp and to investigate students’ perception of it. This is a quantitative research. The population of the sample was thirty two students of the X MIA 6 of SMAN 7 Bandar Lampung in the academic year 2020/2021.The data were collected by using writing test and questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using Paired Samples T-Test and descriptive statistics. It is shown that there was statistically significant improvement of the students’ writing achievement after they were taught through online learning by WhatsApp group chat. Moreover, it could be seen from the computation of Paired Samples T-Test where the T-value (17,576) was higher than t-table with the significance level was 0.00 < 0.05. The result of this research indicates that there is significant improvement in all aspects of students’ writing achievement. This suggests that online learning activity by using WhatsApp can be used as a strategy to improve the students’ writing achievement. An analysis of students' grammatical errors in translating sentences from Indonesian into English based on surface strategy taxonomy towards Standard Gandhi English Course students
This research aims to find out the type of grammatical errors frequently made by the students and to discover students’ problems in translating sentences from Indonesian into English. Moreover, this study used a descriptive qualitative study. In collecting the data, the researcher used students’ translations, open-ended questions, and interviews. The data were analyzed based on surface strategy taxonomy. They were classified into omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The result of this study showed that misformation was the highest error that occurred in students’ translations. It was proven by the total number of errors made by 31 students are 445 items. Moreover, from 445 errors, the proportions of errors in their translations are omission error with 190 items (42.7%), addition error with 30 items (6.7%), misformation error with 197 items (44.3%), and misordering error with 28 items (6.3%). In addition, students’ problems in translating sentences are dominantly on grammar and vocabulary. In this case, by knowing the students’ grammatical errors and students’ problems, the English teacher may use the information of students’ grammatical errors and their problems as guidance to evaluate the weaknesses or progress of the students’ ability in learning English, especially in their translations. Then, the students should practice English more in spoken or written form
English teachers’ perception on teaching English vocabulary using songs as media for senior high school in Bandar Lampung
Abstarct. The objective of this research is to find out teachers’ perception on teaching English vocabulary using songs as media for Senior High School. This is a quantitative research. The sample of the research was 50 Senior High School English teachers in Bandar Lampung. The data were obtained from the close-ended questionnaire through Google form and were analyzed using SPSS. The result of this research showed that the teachers have positive perception on the use of songs to improve students’ vocabulary especially in the effect of songs in learning vocabulary.Keywords: teachers’ perception, vocabulary, song.DOI: 10.23960/UJET.v10.i1.20211
AN ANALYSIS OF SPEAKING ACTIVITIES ON ENGLISH TEXTBOOK BASED ON 2013 CURRICULUM
The aims of this research are to find out the compatibility of English Textbook with the scientific approach principles of 2013 curriculum and criteria of good English textbook. This research was focused on speaking activities in the textbook for senior high school. This research uses qualitative research by using document analysis. The results show that (1) the compatibility of the scientific approach 2013 Curriculum fulfilled 90 point of the qualifications of the existing criteria (2) and the assessment for good English textbook by the expert, fulfilled 85 point compatibility with the existing criteria. Based on the analysis, it was found that the speaking activities of the textbook is adequate for teacher to use this textbook. It means that the speaking activities of the textbook fulfill the criteria based on the scientific approach of 2013 Curriculum and also fulfill the criteria of good English textbook by the expert opinion.Key words: Speaking, Analysis, Compatible, Textbook, 2013 Curriculum. doi: https://dx.doi.org/10.23960/UJET.v10.i2.20211
The implementation of Mind Mapping technique in teaching writing at the second grade of Junior High School 3 Trimurjo
The objectives of this research are to find out: 1) Whether there is any significant improvement of students’ writing ability of descriptive text after being taught through mind mapping technique, 2) Which aspect of writing improved the most after being taught by using mind mapping technique and 3) What is the students’ perception towards the implementation of mind mapping technique in descriptive text writing. This research was a quantitative research used a one group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were 23 students of class VIII A at SMP N 3 Trimurjo in 2019/2020 academic year. Writing tests and questionnaires were administered as the instrument of the research. The data were analyzed by using Paired Sample T-test in which the significance level was determined by p<0.05. The result of the research showed that the value of significant level was 0.00<0.05. It means that there was an improvement in students’ writing ability of descriptive text after the implementation of mind mapping technique and the aspect of writing that improved the most after the implementation of mind mapping technique was content. Furthermore, the result of questionnaires showed that most students (75.86%) gave positive towards the implementation of mind mapping technique in descriptive text writing. Most of the students agree that mind mapping technique can help them in composing writing, make them enjoyed and relaxed in composing writing, make them more interested and motivated in writing. But, almost of them disagree that by using mind mapping technique, they do not have any difficulties to make writing anymore. It means that even they have positive perception towards the implementation of mind mapping technique in descriptive text writing, they still have another difficulty in composing it.Keywords: mind mapping technique, writing ability, students’ perceptionDOI: https://dx.doi.org/10.23960/UJET.v10.i1.20210
