    Teaching English for Management Students. Does Technology Essential?

    Independent learning and independent campus (Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka or MBKM) is a policy of Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemdikbud) which established in early 2020. This program creates challenges for education in Indonesia as teachers and lecturers are required to use technology as a media in teaching. The present study aims to investigate the students’ view toward an application of technology in learning English of management students. The participants of this study were freshman university students majoring in Management, Faculty of Economics, Universitas Sulawesi Barat. A survey questionnaire related the students’ view towards the application of technology in learning English was assigned to the students. Furthermore, an interview was conducted to get depth information. The results of this study showed that the students viewed that using technology in learning English is necessary as it motivated the students in learning English

    Pre-service EFL’ Teachers’ perception of multilingualism and multilingual education

    The objective of the current study was to investigate the perception of pre-service teachers in Indonesia regarding multilingualism and multilingual in education, outlining the benefits of multilingualism in teaching. In this paper, the term of multilingualism was employed to reflect the ability to speak more than one language competently. To this end, a total of 250 pre-service English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers were invited to complete the study; however, only 203 responses were sufficient to be analysed using Rasch Modeling. These responses consisted of 159 female and 44 male pre-service teachers; and 164 pre-service teachers were from private universities and the rests were public university. The findings of this study indicate that a majority of pre-service teachers view multilingualism as beneficial to both their students and themselves. Most participants perceived that multilingualism could facilitate student learning of a new language, help develop their cognitive and communicative skills, and provide them with familiarity with additional languages for easier communicatio

    There are many strategies that educators can use to support successful learning in the classroom, especially for teachers of English, with all the preconditions needed for educators to use learning strategies appropriate to students' situations and circumstances that greatly depend on the situation and the problems that arise. Faced with more complex situations, with all the hassle existing in determining learning strategies, the covid-19 pandemic arrived which interrupted the application of learning strategies as students had to stay at home and wiped out the teacher-student interaction for several years after pandemic covid-19 over. By using a qualitative descriptive research method used to analyze events, phenomena, and social conditions that are well suited to what all levels of society and even the whole country are facing, namely the covid-19 pandemic. The results of this study show that The teachers' strategies applied by English teachers in teaching reading comprehension post-pandemic covid-19 is teacher-activated background knowledge of students, reading aloud together, using a dictionary to find the meaning of difficult words, and explaining again the message of the text, the last teacher asked students to answer the question of the text, teachers’ problems in teaching reading comprehension post-pandemic covid-19 the low interest of students to study English, the students making noise in the classroom, and the students being lazy, the teacher’s strategy solved the problems were teachers always motivated students to study hard, especially in English, gave advice to the students who made a noise or when they sleepy, moved the place of students when they made a noise and gave reward to the students who study hard and got high score in the class

    Developing Higher Order Thinking Skills Test Instruments for English Speaking Classes: Sing a Song Material

    This study aims at creating HOTS items for the "Sing a Song" material,  establishing their level of validity, and determining their dependability for tenth-grade students of MA Madani Alauddin Pao-Pao. The design of this research is research and development (R&D). The improvement version this is used refers back to the Plomp version which includes five levels of development, namely Preliminary investigation, Design, Realization/Construction, Test, Evaluation and Revision (Test, Evaluation and Revition), and Implementation (Implementation). The subjects in this study are students at class X MIA 2 in MA Madani Alauddin Pao-Pao. The instruments used in data collection were validation sheets and HOTS items. Based on the findings of the study, it obtains that the extent of validity of the HOTS gadgets changed into 3.7 that is withinside the very legitimate category, the reliability of the HOTS gadgets is 0.81 suggests in superb category, the issue degree of the HOTS gadgets is 0.60 suggests withinside the medium category.     The Analysis of Sentence Construction and Meaning Interpretation of English Break Verbs and their Verbs Equivalence in Buginese Language

    The purpose of this research is to compare the sentence form and meaning interpretation of 'Break' Verbs in English and Buginese. The sentence construction and the meaning interpretation of verbs confined to Break Verb from English and Buginese language were compared with regards to Dixon’s Affect Verbs Construction and Halliday’s Functional Grammar Construction. The data of this research were collected from two sources. The English data were collected from British National Corpus (BNC) while the Buginese Data was collected from field observation and interview on Soppeng Buginese speaking community. The data were collected and analyzed using Descriptive Qualitative Methods. According to the findings of this study, it was found eighteen Break Verbs in the English language and nineteen in the Buginese language; 2) The ‘Break’ Verbs in both languages are realized into sentences through a number of selections of constructions set up in the two theories that were examined in this research and some additional constructions where each construction plays some contribution to the meaning interpretation; 3) The Break Verbs found in both languages have some similarities and differences regarding their sentence construction and meaning interpretation

    The Use of Sequence Pictures in Storytelling for Students’ Speaking Proficiency Development

    The goal of this research was to see if sequence pictures used as media in teaching speaking through storytelling could significantly help students to develop their speaking ability. This research was using an experimental research design in a quantitative method. The control class was taught through drilling method and experimental class which was instructed through sequence pictures. The study involved the first grade senior high school students at SMA Negeri 5 Semarang. The collected data computed by using SPSS 25. This finding said that using sequence pictures in teaching speaking could improve significantly in the experimental class students’ speaking ability. The students’ speaking ability in both classes control and experimental was different significantly as indicated by the test scores. The control class average pre-test was 69,5 and experimental class was 85 in other hand, the control class average post-test was 74,5 and experimental class was 91,7

    Pandemic covid 19 spreads rapidly. Due to its quick breaks, a lot of countries decided to change some daily routine activies. One of affected aspects is education. Face to face learning has to be turned out into online learning in any level of schools. This present reseach aims to investigate and survey the students’ perception on online learning and what online fatlform mostly used by the students. This research is classified as qualitative research.  This research took 74 participants. The data was obtained by distributing questionnaire which consist of some aspects namely method in delivering material, accessibility, beneft and challenges in onine learning and the most common used flatform during online learning. The result reveals that students prefer to get explanation in online learning. Internet connection and accessibility are complicated problems foun during online learning. Most of students also have lack of proper devices. They mostly use their smartphone with less memory devices. As a result, they have problems during online learning.     Discourse Analysis of Grammatical Cohesion Devices in Student Explanation Texts

    This study aims to find out the use of cohesive grammatical devices in twelfth-grade students’ explanation texts. In addition, this study also aims to explore the types of grammatical cohesion specifications in their essays. In this study, the researcher wanted to find out how good the quality of their student’s writing explanation texts was. To achieve this goal, the researcher used the conceptual framework of Halliday and Hasan (1976) regarding grammatical cohesion. This study applied to the twelfth grade of the Senior High School Level. The research uses descriptive and analytic studies by assigning students to write the texts. The result from the students’ explanation texts as the data in this research, there are 146 cohesive grammatical items found in students’ explanation texts. The reference occurs 68 times which has 46.5 of percentages. Conjunction occurs 53 times with 36.3% percent. Substitution occurs 23 with 15.7% percent. Ellipsis occurs two times with the lowest rate of 1.3%. The result shows that all four types of grammatical cohesion appear in students’ explanatory texts, which are the primary data in this study. However, there are subtypes of cohesive devices that don’t exist in students’ explanation texts from all of those devices. The most dominant was the reference and conjunction; on the other hand, ellipsis was the smallest presentation among grammatical cohesive, and only a few students used them. The result also indicated that the lack of grammatical cohesion devices used in terms of the generical structure of explanation text, knowledge, and ability in writing leads the college students to use inappropriate grammatical cohesion devices to be applied to this type of text. Thus, this study comes up with feedback to teachers that the discussion on the structural writing of texts and the use of coherence and cohesion should be more intensive

    The objective of the research is to get information of learning strategies which are commonly used by the eighth grade Students of the SMP Negeri 2 in speaking in the classroom and to know the strategies which are most effective to improve the speaking skill according to the eighth grade Students of the SMP Negeri 2 Parepare. This study apply a descriptive method. To get the good result, this study applies two questionnaires about students’ learning strategies and which learning strategies are most affective the students’ learning. The population of this research is the third semester students of the eighth grade Students of the SMP Negeri 2 Parepare in academic year 2020/2021. The sample of this study was 35 students. The result of this study found that the students 1) using English in classroom, 2) asking by using English, 3) actively imitating their teacher, 4) translating difficult sentences, 5) making quiz acively, and 6) correcting the structure mistake making by their friends, 7) paying attention to vocabulary, tenses, pronunciation, etc

    Conventional Teaching and an Interactive-Based Teaching Methods to adjust Learners’ Grammar and Speaking Competence in English Classrooms: A Comparative Study for effectiveness methods in learning

    The study discusses the effectiveness of Conventional Teaching Method utilizing whole-class member group and an Interactive-based Teaching Method employing small group works for improving both learners’ Grammar and Speaking competences in English Grammar classrooms. Data were taken from 68 first-year students of English Education Department of UNIDAYAN University, Bau-Bau, South-East Sulawesi province, who sit in a pre-test and post-test of two English competences; Grammar and Speaking in English. The research design is quasi experimental assigning 5 group works as the independent variables and 2 English competences; Grammar and Speaking in English as the dependent variables. The group works consist of various number of students. The treatment of all group works were reduplicated twice. The study reveals that the interactive-based teaching method utilizing small group works is far more effective for improving both learners’ Grammar and Speaking competences compared to those of conventional teaching method employing whole-class member group work in English Grammar classroom. The learners’ mean achievement is 25.04 points and 8.8 points respectively. The t-test confirms that there is a significant difference between the two methods. Moreover, the less the number of group members the more effective to the achievement of the learning target of the classrooms
