    Elevating the Pre-service Teacher's Translation Skill based on Learner Autonomy

    This paper attempts to improve the pre-service teachers based on student's learner Autonomy. The EFL classroom by first describing the role of translation in EFL learning, then exploring Learner Autonomy can be regarded as an effective teaching method to elevate student's Translation skill. Research setting at West-Sulawesi University, Majene West Sulawesi.  The method was used pre-experimental design by one group pretest and posttest.  Over 22 students programming Translation were the samples of this study by using purposive sampling technique. To collect the data, researchers used translation test as instrument, it was applied on pretest and posttest. To improve student's skill towards Translation, Learner Autonomy was implemented for 12 meetings within 4 months. The notion of learner independence or learner autonomy moves into an area where learners can direct their own learning particularly in translating the sentences and text provided during the class. It could mean those learning activities which take place without the immediate intervention of the teacher. In this scenario, learners set their own objectives and follow strategies devised by them to fulfill them. This is in turn facilitates the learner to become more efficient and effective when they study independently. Learners are compelled to assume responsibility for their own learning.     Analyzing Learning Autonomy in Reading English Text at MTS DDI AS-Salman Sidrap

    This research is aimed at investigating the implementation of autonomous learning. Autonomous learning consists of three aspects: self-planning, self-monitoring, and self-evaluating. This research is a use a mixed-method sequential explanatory design. The subject of the research is 24 students of the first grade students of junior high school. The writer observed the classroom, and also gave a set of questionnaire to the students to find out whether they are an autonomous learner or not. The result showed that in self-planning aspect, 56.83% students are self-planned; they are categorized into “poorâ€. In self-monitoring aspect, 81.85% students are self-monitored; they are categorized into “goodâ€. In self-evaluating aspect, 62.53% students are self-evaluated; they are categorized into “fairâ€. So, the students got good category in self-monitoring aspect, whereas for self-planning and self-evaluating must be improved

    Using Herringbone Technique in Teaching Reading Narrative Text at the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 9 Parepare

    This research discussed how the use herringbone technique  to improve the students’ ability in reading. This research used quasi experimental design that applied a pre-test and post-test design. The data was analyzed by using t-test. The population of this research was the eight year students of SMP Negeri 9 Parepare in academic year 2013/2014. There were two classes, a class for experimental class and a class for control class. It utilized cluster random sampling technique. The number of each class was 30 students. The instrument used in this research was reading test use of herringbone technique in learning reading. The result of this research was a significant difference between experimental group and control group. This indicates the mean score of the post-test of experimental group was 97 while that of the control group was 92. Moreover, the t-test value (7,24) was higher than t-table value (2.021). In other words, Hypothesis Alternative (H1) was accepted and Hypothesis Null (H0) was rejected. This means that Using Herringbone technique can improve the students’ reading comprehension by using herringbone technique

    Implementing the Principles of Andragogy in ELT to Enhance the students’ English Competence

    Various methods and activities have been undertaken by English teachers to improve the ability of students in English, but the reality shows that a monotonous and tedious method causes students to become passive. This study aims to determine the effect of using the principles of andragogy on the motivation and ability of English speaking students at the Faculty of Law, University of Sawerigading Makassar. The data in this study were obtained through oral tests given in the initial and final tests. The author also uses a questionnaire filled by 25 students from the experimental class. Data obtained from oral tests were then analyzed and interpreted using the SPSS 16 program, while questionnaires were analyzed and interpreted using a Likert scale. The results showed that the treatment given to the experimental class succeeded in improving students' English proficiency. The questionnaire results also show that the average value obtained is 90.16 and can be classified as "very interested". This indicates that the students in the experimental class responded positively to the method used.                   Keywords: principles of andragogy, student ability, motivation, English

    The Effect of Interruptions on Rapport Orientation in Formal Meetings

    This research aims to find out  the effects of interruptions on rapport orientations. The data of the research were obtained from two meetings held in an educational institution in Makassar. The data were collected through a video recording of the meetings to identify the interruption use performed by the meeting participants and by giving the meeting participants the questionnaire containing questions concerning the use of the interruptions in the meetings. The data were then transcribed and extracted into several parts to be analysed. The data were also obtained by carrying out a participant observation by which the researcher obtained the meeting participants’ perceptions and their responses on the use of the interruptions during the meetings. This research indicates that the interruptions have a number of effects on the rapport orientations. There are two types of interruptions, i.e. competitive and cooperative interruptions. The interruption effects are primarily regarding to the enhancement and threats to the three interconnected rapport components which are: face, social rights and obligations, and interactional goals. The interruptions occurring also have several roles in the meetings which are closely related to the rapport management like clarifying and supporting main speakers’ points in the meetings, as the way to do relational work and back-channeling of the statement of the main speakers resulting in the type of rapport orientations applied by the meetings’ participants

    The Influence of Using Teams-Games-Tournament (TGT) on Simple Present Tense

    The objective in this research is to find out the influence of  using  Teams – Games – tournament (TGT) towards Simple Present tense at seventh grade of Smp Negeri 5 Wonomulyo. This is a quantitative pre-experiment research design where the researcher  chose one group pre-test post-test  research design.  The population of this research is the students of seventh grade of SMP Negeri 5 Wonomulyo where the total number of population were 155 of five classes. The sample of population was 28 students where The researcher used technique simple purposive sampling. The result of this research proves that there is  an influence of using  TGT on simple present tense mastery. According  to calculation,  it can be seen that mean score of pre-test was 56,78 and mean score of post-test was 72,5. moreover, based on the result of analysis the data, the value of  t-table  is 11,22  and the value of t-test is  1.703, it means that 11,22 > 1.703. It can be concluded that learning Simple present tense by using TGT technique has an influence towards the students simple present tense mastery of the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 5 Wonomulyo. &nbsp

    Peer Feedback Technique in Teaching Writing Skill of the Third Semester Students of IAIN Parepare

    Writing is still considered as a difficult skill in language learning by Indonesian students. For that reason, it is urgent for teacher to seek for interesting ways to teach writing in the classroom. This study examines the effectiveness of  the use of peer feedback technique to improve students’ skill in writing descriptive paragraph. Some studies have proved the effectiveness of the technique to improve students’ writing skill. The study employs experimental research in which one class of 20 students is  taught to write narrative paragraph and correct their paragraph using peer feedback technique. The result of the study shows that the technique improves the students writing skill in narrative writing, however the scores are not significant. This suggests that there is a factor that affects the result of the teaching using peer feedback, and it is the less time of treatment which is indicated as the factor

    This research scrutinizes find out To find out the student’s error in using passive voice at the Students of MA DDI Banua. The Objectives of the study are: (1) to obtain and identify the common error made by students in constructing Passive voice in Simple past tense and (2) to obtain the causes of errors in constructing Passive voice in simple past tense. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. In collecting data, the writer used 3 (three) types of techniques: Observation, interview and test. This research was carried out the students of MA DDI Banua. The population of the research are the students of MA DDI Banua in Academic year 2015/2016 with total number was 79 and Sample of the research will be taken by using random sampling technique. The researcher take language class since the researcher would like to know the students’ ability in language class about passive voice. The sample is from class XI with consist of 18 students. Based on the finding and discussion, the researcher concludes the highest until the lowest frequency and the percentage of errors made by students derives from Information of Passive Verb The writer gave a 20-item highest until the lowest frequency and the percentage of errors made by students derives from global error with 231 errors or 84.61%, local error with 42 errors or 15.39% and the highest until the lowest frequency and the percentage of errors in Information Error made by students derives from Verb 3 (196 errors or 40.55%), Object Pronoun (49 errors or 13.61%), Subject – Object (87 errors or 24.16%), Be (78 errors or 16.11)

    The Effectiveness of Suggestopedia Method with Wordwall Picture in Increasing Vocabulary Mastery with Learning Disabilities

    This study investigates the effects of Suggestopedia method with wordwall picture in increase the vocabulary mastery students of SMPLB Negeri Parepare in academic year 2016/ 2017. This method engages the students’ attentions and various fun learning activities which decreased the students’ boredom during their learning. Wordwall picture provides the students’ illustrations and ideas in their minds. It applied mixed methods research design quantitative and qualitative approaches with single group interrupted time-series design. The population are who students with learning disabilities of SMPLB Parepare in academic year 2016/2017 which consist of 11 students and the sample constitútes consist of 5 students.  This research  used sampling as  a technique of sampling. Based on the quantitative analysis, the result showed that 1) student test were significant accorbing to the questionnaire, the result show thet the students motivation incresed. It means that suggestopedia method with wordwall picture affected the students vocebulary mastery in learning. The result also proved that students interest in learning english has a significant relationship or influence with students vocebulary score. 2) The qualitative data from questionnaire showed that students’ motivation increased. It means that Suggestopedia method with wordwall picture affected the students vocabulary, mastery in learning, it proved that Suggestopedia Method with Wordwall Picture able to increase the interest in learning English of the students with disabilities learning of SMPLB Parepare
