USING ‘BRAINSTORMING’ TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING ESSAYS
This research aims to improve students‟ ability in writing essays. “Listing†technique in Brainstorming activity was applied to students taking Writing III subject. Before and after the action, a pre-test and a posttest were conducted. After the action (two cycles), there was an increase of the mean score from the pre-test (53.77) to posttest (63.49). The result of observation also showed that the students‟ activity in following Listing technique is 68.6%. This fulfilled the criteria applied (³ 61). Besides, t-test was also used to see the effectiveness of the Listing technique. The result showed that „t‟ observed (3.92) is greater than „t‟ table at the level of 0.05 (2.021) and 0.01 (2.704) This indicates that Listing technique is effective in improving the students‟ ability in writing essays
BETWEEN EXPECTATION AND PRACTICES OF EDUCATOR CERTIFICATION: WHAT DO WE NEED ?
To some extend, Indonesian government has launched a program namely certification to improve teachers’ quality. The teacher certification process mandated by the law on teachers and lecturers, was developed and is currently being implemented. This program not only has implications regarding the quality of teaching but also deals with salary increases, professional development and promotion possibilities. Different with other countries which teacher certification is given as a licence to teach, in Indonesian this certification is to ensure teacher’s competence level. As a result, a certified teacher is then entitled to a professional allowance in an amount equivalent to his or her base salary
IMPROVING STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION THROUGH THE USE OF RECIPROCAL TEACHING TECHNIQUE AT STMIK RIAU PEKANBARU
This research aimed to describe and explain to what extent Reciprocal Teaching could improve the reading comprehension of semester II/E students of STMIK Riau Pekanbaru and the factors that influenced the change of their reading comprehension through Reciprocal Teaching. This research was a classroom action research, every cycle consisted of four four fundamental aspects namely, planning , action, observation, and reflection. The participants of this research were the semester II/E students majoring in Computer Science/Informatics STMIK Riau Pekanbaru totalling 35 students. The instruments of this research were a reading comprehension test, an observation sheet, field note, and interview. There were two main findings of this research: (1) Reciprocal Teaching could improve thestudents’ reading comprehension; (2) Teaching material, class acitivity, class management, and lecturer’s approach were the factors that could influence the change of students’ reading comprehension
INDONESIAN STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN PRONOUNCING ENGLISH DIPHTONGS
One of Indonesian students\u27 difficulties in learning English is pronouncing English sounds correctly. Indonesian language as mother tongue influences significantly to the way of Indonesian students in pronouncing English sounds. Compared to English, Indonesian language generally does not have differences between spelling the letter and pronouncing the sounds. Among all English sounds, diphthongs are assumed as one of the most difficulties pronounced by Indonesian students. This study was conducted to thirty five students of University of Pasir Pengaraian, Riau Province by using mix method where the researcher gave test to find out students’ difficulties in pronouncing English diphthongs and observation to describe the factors influencing students’ difficulties in pronouncing English diphthongs. The result of study showed that the most difficult of English diphthong was [аυ] sound. Factors influencing students have difficulties in pronouncing English diphthongs were mother language interfere, lack of knowledge in English sound systems and unsuccessful in using borrowed English words. This study is expected can give contribution in improving Indonesian students pronunciation especially diphthong sounds
AN ANALYSIS OF STUDENTS’ ENGLISH COMPETENCE (TOEFL EQUIVALENT) AT RIAU UNIVERSITY PEKANBARU
This study aims to investigate the competence of students’ English language (TOEFL Equivalent) at Riau University Pekanbaru and the factors associated with (gender, parents economic background, and majors in high school). The research Population is Riau University students who take the TOEFL Prediction in 2015/2016 - approximately 7,000, - students. The samples were taken at 5% of the total population of 350 students. TOEFL Prediction - compiled by UP2B Universitas Riau - used to collect data. The results of this study are as follows: a) the average score of TOEFL Equivalent Riau University students are 372, b) the averag scores of female students slightly higher (374) than the average scores of male students, c) the average score of economic students parents medium slightly higher (376) than the economics student parents low, and d) the average score of students whose background natural science (IPA) also slightly higher (378) than the students background knowledge social knowledge (IPS). The implications of the findings of this study are students need training intensive TOEFL Prediction on aspects of listening (mini - talk), reading comprehension (reading comprehension - the main idea and supporting ideas), and grammar / writing expression (sentence error)
EXPERIMENTAL INQUIRY OF PUPPETS AND VIDEO ON STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL OF TRANSACTIONAL AND INETRPERSONAL EXPRESSIONS
This research was intended to investigate whether students who were taught by puppets had better speaking skill of transactional and interpersonal expression than those who were taught by video. This research was experimental research; nonrandomized control group prepost test design. The treatments were done in both of classes; experimental I and experimental II class. Experimental I was taught by puppets while experimental II class was taught by video. Instrument used to collect the data was speaking test. Independent t-test was chosen to analyze data. Finding showed that students who were taught by puppets had better speaking skill of transactional and interpersonal expression than those who were taught by video. Puppets enhanced students’ gain score of speaking skill
IMPROVING STUDENTS’ ANALYTICAL ESSAY WRITING BASED ON POETRY THROUGH LITERARY RESPONSE APPROACH
Based on the researcher‟s experience and observation, the students analytical essay writing skill at the second year of English education department, class E of UIN Suska Riau still indicated low. It was assumed that this condition was caused by inappropriate teaching process done by the lecturer.The purposes of the research were to explain whether literary response approach could better improve students‟ analytical essay writing skill at the second year of English education department, class e of UIN Suska Riau. The researcher was helped by the collaborator who used the observation checklists, field notes, and the interviews as the research instruments. Besides, she also used analytical essay writing tests to see thestudents‟ improvement of analytical essay writing on each cycle. The research stared on October, 29th, 2008 and ended on 14thof January-2009. The percentage of the average improvement on cycle I for all analytical essay writing components was 54, 25 %. There was the improvement, if it was compared to the previous result at the last semester. It was only 32,35%. At the second cycle, it improved to 61,44 %, and at the end of cycle III improved to 78,43 %.the factors of literary response approach that influenced students‟ analytical essay writing are: (1) the enjoyment of reading the poem enthusiastically; (2) the poem‟s choice of words has made the easy to understand the meaning; (3) the good atmosphere of teaching and learning process; (4) the interaction among them to motivate to write good essay.Based on the finding, it was concluded that literary response approach can improve students‟ analytical essay writing at the second year of English education Department, class E of UIN Suska Riau, therefore, the researcher should continue using these approach in teaching English literature
THE EFFECT OF PEER EDITING TECHNIQUE TOWARD WRITING SKILL IN NARRATIVE TEXT
The purpose of the research was to know the effect of peer editing technique toward writing skill in narrative text of the first year students at University of Pasir Pengaraian Hilir. The method in this research was experimental research, pre test and post test design. The participants of the study are 41 students. The results of this research are there was significant effect in post test with using peer editing technique. (To) value was 5.679 and (Tt) value was 2.020. It showed that (To) was higher than (Tt). STUDENTS’ READING INTEREST (A CASE STUDY AT FKIP OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PASIR PENGARAIAN)
This article constitutes a discussion about the students’ reading interest at FKIP of the University of Pasir Pengaraian. It is a research report triggered from the data showed that reading was an activity disliked by Indonesian people. This reaserch can be categoried as descriptive quantitative research. In collecting data, researcher used questionnaires, observation and interviews. The result of research showed that the reading interest of FKIP-UPP students can be categorized into low level. Factors influencing students’ reading interest involving internal and external. By conducting this research, it is expected to give contribution to this institution to increase students’ reading interest
AN ANALYSIS ON THE THIRD SEMESTER STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL IN DELIVERING IMPROMPTU SPEECH
The purpose of this research was to find out how is the skill of students of University of Pasir Pengaraian especially in third semester of English Study Program in students delivering impromptu speech. This research is descriptive qualitative. The data were gotten from the students in third semester. The data were taken through Speaking Test in impromptu speech from the video and transcript of the students itself. The steps in analyzing the data are collecting the data, analyzing the data, and displaying the result of the analysis. The third semester students of English Study Program of University of Pasir Pengaraian had average level in delivering impromptu speech. 18 students (54,54%) had the average score. 14 students (42,42%) had the fair score, and 1 student had the poor (3,03%). It can be concluded that the students’ skill in delivering impromptu speech was average.
