Spectral theory of unbounded Jacobi operators in the Hilbert sequence space and Sturm-Liouville problems of Atkinson type

    No full text
Current research on regular Sturm-Liouville problems (SLP) includes a class of differential equations defined by F. Atkinson, whose spectral theory has been developed independently of operator theory. In this thesis, we introduce a novel approach through the theory of unbounded Hermitian operators: for SLP of Atkinson type, equivalent matrix eigenvalue problems AY = λY are constructed, where the infinite-dimensional matrices A have a tridiagonal form. The matrices A can be viewed as unbounded Hermitian Jacobi operators H of the Hilbert sequence space – these operators H can be extended to (non-unique) self-adjoint operators S ⊃ H via the Cayley transformation. The respective S are characterized by the separated boundary conditions of the underlying SLP. Regarding the spectral analysis, the abstract spectral theorem is incorporated, according to which there exists a Stieltjes integral representation for the resolvent of the operator S. The jump discontinuities of the weight function ϱ(λ) correspond to the eigenvalues of S; at the same time, they coincide with the eigenvalues of the SLP of Atkinson type. Those jump discontinuities can be localized using the theory of orthogonal polynomials. Here we consider special polynomials of the Askey scheme which are orthogonal with respect to the weight function ϱ(λ). Using the polynomials, holomorphic functions are constructed whose zeros correspond to the eigenvalues of the SLP

Optimizing EEG ICA decomposition with data cleaning in stationary and mobile experiments

Electroencephalography (EEG) studies increasingly utilize more mobile experimental protocols, leading to more and stronger artifacts in the recorded data. Independent Component Analysis (ICA) is commonly used to remove these artifacts. It is standard practice to remove artifactual samples before ICA to improve the decomposition, for example using automatic tools such as the sample rejection option of the AMICA algorithm. However, the effects of movement intensity and the strength of automatic sample rejection on ICA decomposition have not been systematically evaluated. We conducted AMICA decompositions on eight open-access datasets with varying degrees of motion intensity using varying sample rejection criteria. We evaluated decomposition quality using mutual information of the components, the proportion of brain, muscle, and 'other' components, residual variance, and an exemplary signal-to-noise ratio. Within individual studies, increased movement significantly decreased decomposition quality, though this effect was not found across different studies. Cleaning strength significantly improved the decomposition, but the effect was smaller than expected. Our results suggest that the AMICA algorithm is robust even with limited data cleaning. Moderate cleaning, such as 5 to 10 iterations of the AMICA sample rejection, is likely to improve the decomposition of most datasets, regardless of motion intensity

This Rahmenpapier discusses the performativity approaches of Bourdieu and Butler as reflexive research perspectives on the social construction of migrant and refugee identities. Focusing on the performativity of speech acts and emotionalized enactments, I employ empirical data examples about commodified and familial care work that reveals how migration and refugeeness are constituted in micro-level face-to-face interactions. Introducing the concepts of doing, undoing and not doing migration/refugeeness, I show different care performances that reproduce, transform or subvert social identities in the interplay of individual agency with the social regulation by institutional, organizational and discursive structures of the national migration, asylum and integration regimes. Throughout the paper, I argue that the social order of migration/refugeeness is biopolitical and postcolonial: drawing on historical images of orientalism, social positions of internal others are constituted and simultaneously subordinated to the majority society. Regulated by biopolitical means of administration and disciplining, social processes of doing of migration/refugeeness generate affective values in the images of internal and external others, who supposedly depend on the care and control of the hegemonic nation. When 'migrant/refugee workers' are used as an effective and economical solution to the increasing labor demand of the nation and when 'refugee families' become a commodity on the national market of public and private social services, the social order of migration/refugeeness materializes in productive values that benefit the nation state.

The holistic characterization of different microbiomes in anaerobic digestion (AD) systems can contribute to a better understanding of these systems and provide starting points for bioengineering. The present study investigates the microbiome of 80 European full-scale AD systems. Operational, chemical and taxonomic data were thoroughly collected, analysed and correlated to identify the main drivers of AD processes. The present study describes chemical and operational parameters for a broad spectrum of different AD systems. With this data, Spearman correlation and differential abundance analyses were applied to narrow down the role of the individual microorganisms detected. The authors succeeded in further limiting the number of microorganisms in the core microbiome for a broad range of AD systems. Based on 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, MBA03, Proteiniphilum, a member of the family Dethiobacteraceae, the genus Caldicoprobacter and the methanogen Methanosarcina were the most prevalent and abundant organisms identified in all digesters analysed. High ratios for Methanoculleus are often described for agricultural co-digesters. Therefore, it is remarkable that Methanosarcina was surprisingly high in several digesters reaching ratios up to 47.2%. The various statistical analyses revealed that the microorganisms grouped according to different patterns. A purely taxonomic correlation enabled a distinction between an acetoclastic cluster and a hydrogenotrophic one. However, in the multivariate analysis with chemical parameters, the mainclusters corresponded to hydrolytic and acidogenic microorganisms, with SAOB bacteria being particularly important in the second group. Including operational parameters resulted in digester-type specific grouping of microbes. Those with separate acidification stood out among the many reactor types due to their unexpected behaviour. Despite maximizing the organic loading rate in the hydrolytic pretreatments, these stages turned into extremely robust methane production units. From 80 different AD systems, one of the most holistic data sets is provided. A very distinct formation of microbial clusters was discovered, depending on whether taxonomic, chemical or operational parameters were combined. The microorganisms in the individual clusters were strongly dependent on the respective reference parameters

In the last three decades, a lively traffic in theories of material culture has developed. A so-called "material turn" occurred, which crossed various disciplines such as anthropology, archaeology, cultural geography, or science and technology studies (STS). Accordingly, the question of what material culture actually is has occupied scholars in various fields of research and has given rise to a theoretical perspective known as ‘new materialism’. It promotes a new understanding of matter and invites critical questions about human relationships with nature and the environment through technology. This is accompanied by the search for a differentiation of binary thought structures, such as the divisions between mind and matter or nature and culture. The course offers an introduction to ‘New Materialism’ and its basic thesis, critically reflects on its methodological implications and explores different applications through a variety of practices. Some theories of ‘New Materialism’ are discussed through the objects discussed. These objects all come from the Wendish Museum in Cottbus, which supported the events for which this volume of our student research series is an important curatorial contribution

In the evolving landscape of cryptographic security, the robustness of Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) against side-channel analysis (SCA) attacks is of paramount importance due to the widespread use of ECC and the growing sophistication of SCAs. This thesis delves into the investigation of Longa's atomic patterns applied within Elliptic Curve scalar multiplication algorithms, assessing their resistance to horizontal SCAs. The research employs these atomic patterns in practical implementation on a microcontroller (Texas Instruments Launchpad F28379 board) using the open-source cryptographic library FLECC in C. In our analysis, we only focused on the distinguishability of the first atomic block in the Elliptic Curve point doubling and point addition patterns. Due to various technical limitations, we were unable to determine significant differences in the execution time and the shapes of the atomic blocks. Further investigations of the SCA-resistance can be performed based on this work. A significant contribution of this work is the identification and correction of several discrepancies in Longa's original atomic patterns. This thesis marks the first practical implementation of Longa’s patterns, extending the theoretical research into empirical analysis.

The great capabilities of modern electronics have brought in any aspect of our life innovations that were inconceivable before. This progress is enabled by a microelectronic market in continuous evolution, where novel solutions are introduced in order to fulfil the increasing requirements in terms of computing speed, energy efficiency, and area miniaturization. Among the various possibilities under the spotlight for thrusting the performance advancement in the next generation of computing systems, major chip manufacturers are carefully investigating emerging Non-Volatile Memory (eNVM) technologies, in particular Resistive Random Access Memory (RRAM). While it was originally studied as an alternative non-volatile memory medium, the research community has soon realized how this family of devices with their tunable resistance can lead to new efficient designs in a variety of applications. The protagonist of the renewed enthusiasm for this technology is the thriving Artificial Intelligence (AI) field, where RRAM can support the fabrication of analogue accelerators. More precisely, the dual nature of an RRAM array as memory block and computing unit has the potential to implement novel hardware solutions that take inspiration from the human brain to efficiently execute Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). However, the establishment of RRAM devices in the customer market is delayed by the on-going research to optimize the fabrication process. The contrast between the unsettled underlying hardware and the great interest toward emerging RRAM-based designs resulted in a performance gap between the envisioned RRAM systems and the prototyped ones. In order to transition the RRAM technology from the academic research to real-world scenarios, more circuits need to be designed, implemented, and tested. At the same time, the complexity and cost of modern electronics production impose high reliability and performance standard on the fabricated chip that can only be met by a tight link between the circuit-level validation and any stage of the design development. Unfortunately, the available tools to support the designer at the application- and system-level do not generally offer this cross-layer interface. This work investigates how important the electrical validation can be to guide the designer by comparing the circuital reliability aspects of a traditional routing component and an alternative RRAM-based implementation. Moreover, two different approaches are proposed to bridge the gap between the electric domain and the higher abstraction layers. First, SystemC-AMS is analysed as a viable option to include analogue simulations in Electronic System Level (ESL) evaluation. Several optimization techniques are also proposed to improve the framework performance. Finally, a Pytorch/Spectre tool-chain is implemented to enable circuit-level co-simulation during the testing of ANN models. The tool-chain is validated by considering the end-to-end accuracy for two classification tasks, namely MNIST and CIFAR10 datasets.

In the field of structural engineering, additive manufactured materials enable the realisation of complex geometries. In addition, the final microstructure of the material is influenced by the process parameters. The example of the aluminium alloy AlSi10 Mg shows that optimised process parameters can achieve a mechanical behaviour comparable to conventional materials. Based on the sensitive behaviour of the mechanical properties to changes in the manufacturing process, the finished components are affected by the damage behaviour of the material. The present work applies a coupled Chaboche-Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman model for the numerical description of AlSi10 Mg material behaviour and implements it into the FE program Abaqus with a User Material Subroutine. This numerical approach allows the description of a rate-dependent material behaviour under consideration of damage mechanisms. This dissertation develops a methodology for parameter identification, which transitions into an optimisation task. To improve the objective function, the coupled Chaboche-Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman model is extended with thermomechanical approaches. This allows capturing temperature changes due to mechanical deformations in addition to the material’s stress response from thermomechanical experiments. The optimisation is performed in the mathematics programme Matlab, with the thermomechanical model formulated as an adiabatic system. For realising a nearly adiabatic system state, experiments with high deformation rates are integrated. In addition, this work addresses the extension of the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman model to include an approach that considers the influence of shear stresses on the material’s damage behaviour. For parameter identification and validation, tensile tests, tests with low stress triaxialities, and cyclic tests are conducted. The validation of the optimised parameters is carried out through FE calculations. The results show high accuracy in representing the real material behaviour through the simulation

Smart grids provide state-of-the-art communication and information technologies that facilitate the integration of distributed generation units (DGUs) as well as the design of novel and flexible control strategies. In particular, the design of control strategies for DGUs in medium- and low-voltage (MV/LV) distribution microgrids, as well as for load tap changer transformers (LTCs) in extra high- and high-voltage (EHV/HV) transmission grids, is considered in this work. On the one hand, the DGUs are enabled to provide voltage control support by adopting a grid-aware operation paradigm, which allows them to autonomously switch between grid-forming and grid-feeding schemes whenever necessary. On the other hand, LTCs are equipped with a control strategy that imposes a coordinated sequence of discrete tap changes to ensure voltage regulation and prevent undesired transient phenomena. From a control systems perspective, ensuring stability in the presence of discontinuous phenomena, e.g., grid-aware switches and LTC taps, demands the explicit consideration of such features. Hence, the contributions of the present work are derived within the framework of switched systems theory and are characterized by the following aspects: (i) A passivity-based grid-feeding DGU controller is designed by taking inspiration from a similar grid-forming controller proposed in the literature. By taking this approach, stabilization results can be extended to microgrids with an arbitrary topology. (ii) A grid-aware DGU control strategy for autonomously switching between controllers is designed as a state- and time-dependent switching logic, which ensures that the closed-loop switched microgrid dynamics possesses a unique equilibrium point. (iii) Stability guarantees of the equilibrium point are provided by deriving sufficient tuning conditions for the control parameters via dwell-time methods within a multiple Lyapunov functions framework. The points (i)-(iii) are addressed separately for DC and AC microgrids. (iv) The discontinuous features of a class of LTC-controlled AC transmission grids are captured by a switched dynamic model. Based on this, a coordinated control strategy for LTCs is proposed, together with sufficient tuning conditions for its control parameters that ensure convergence of the regulated voltage and prevent undesired voltage oscillations known as voltage hunting. The viability of the abovementioned results is validated via illustrative simulation examples.

Forensic entomology is a subfield of entomology in which the time of death is determined based on the species composition and age of the maggots found. Entomotoxicology combines forensic entomology and toxicology by investigating the effects of toxic substances on forensic relevant species. Ceftriaxone is a cephalosporin and belongs to the β-lactam antibiotics and levofloxacin is a quinolone antibiotic. Because of endogenous bactericidal secretions, maggots are adapted to live on surfaces with a high density of potential bacterial pathogens such as corpses, carcasses, excrements, or other decaying materials. This property is utilised in medicine to treat bacterial infections and in forensic sciences to determine the time of death and raises the question of the extent to which an additional bactericidal source influences the development of maggots. To answer this question experiments were carried out for three different species in the family Calliphoridae (blow flies). The species Lucilia sericata, Calliphora vomitoria and Protophormia terraenovae were selected for the study to remain within one family of Diptera. For each test procedure, 8 samples were prepared. A control treatment without antibiotics, one treatment each with a ceftriaxone concentration of 28.57 μg/g, 14.3 μg/g and 7.14 μg/g, one treatment each with a levofloxacin concentration of 3.57 μg/g, 1.79 μg/g and 0.89 μg/g and a mixed treatment. Additional tests were conducted in the microbiology department of the Medizinische Universität Lausitz - Carl-Thiem to test the duration of the effects of antibiotics in the culture medium. Both antibiotics are significantly longer active in the nutritional basis without natural elimination. The antibacterial effects of levofloxacin were observed at all examined concentrations during all 10 days of the tests and antibacterial effects of ceftriaxone were observed for 6, 7 and 8 days respectively. The maggot development of Calliphora vomitoria was significantly delayed by 24 – 48 hours depending on the concentration of the antibiotics, which could result in an underestimation of the post-mortem interval. The maggot development of Lucilia sericata was not significantly altered by the used antibiotics, errors in the determination of the time of death are therefore unlikely. Depending on the concentration of the antibiotics, the development time of Protophormia terraenovae was significantly reduced by 24 – 48 hours. The reduced development time could result in an overestimation of the post-mortem interval. As Protophormia terraenovae is considered to be a medically utilised species, the improved growth conditions could be relevant for both forensic investigations and medical treatments. The significantly different effects of the tested antibiotics on the three species highlight that it is impossible to draw conclusions and generalise about effects on other untested species.
