Urodele amphibians possess remarkable regenerative abilities, allowing them to fully restore lost body parts. The axolotl, in particular, has become a key model organism for regeneration research due to its easy maintenance in laboratory settings. However, its paedomorphic life history pattern—the absence of natural metamorphosis—limits the generalizability of findings to other salamander species. To decipher differences and similarities in the underlying mechanisms of regeneration processes and to better understand evolutionary and ecological influences, comparative studies with other salamander species are essential. Chapter I compares the regenerative abilities of the axolotl with those of the metamorphosing tiger salamander. Larval tiger salamanders exhibit similarly impressive regenerative capacities as axolotls, while post-metamorphic individuals show incomplete fracture healing and delayed regeneration with skeletal anomalies. Chapter II investigates tail regeneration in the tiger salamander during metamorphosis, demonstrating that regeneration continues both during and after this developmental stage, although its speed and structural quality vary. This highlights the impact of metamorphosis on the regeneration process. Chapter III analyzes limb regeneration in six plethodontid salamander species with different lifestyles and habitats. All species exhibit significant regenerative abilities, though anatomical anomalies are common after regeneration. Additionally, correlations between regeneration speed and habitat are identified. Chapter IV examines fin regeneration in lungfish. The observed anomalies resemble those found in salamanders, supporting the hypothesis that epimorphic regenerative abilities have a deep evolutionary origin

People with aphasia show stable Cumulative Semantic Interference (CSI) when tested repeatedly in a web-based paradigm: A perspective for longitudinal assessment

Retrieving words quickly and correctly is an important language competence. Semantic contexts, such as prior naming of categorically related objects, can induce conceptual priming but also lexical-semantic interference, the latter likely due to enhanced competition during lexical selection. In the continuous naming (CN) paradigm, such semantic interference is evident in a linear increase in naming latency with each additional member of a category out of a seemingly random sequence of pictures being named (cumulative semantic interference/CSI effect). Extensively studied in neurotypical participants, CSI studies in people with aphasia (PWA) are rare, although some lesions regularly and persistently impair word retrieval. In the present study, 20 PWA with lesions in the extended left hemispheric language network and 20 matched controls underwent a CN paradigm, naming photographs of closely related objects from 24 categories (e.g., birds) with 5 members each. The experiment was conducted web-based (Stark et al., 2022) on three days (day 1, 2, and 8). The main results are: (i) Mild-moderate aphasia does not preclude web-based testing. (ii) The CSI effect in naming latencies (∼21 ms per ordinal position) did not differ significantly between groups but was more variable in the PWA; the effect was stable across days. (iii) Overall response times decreased between day 1 and day 2, but remained stable on day 8. (iv) In PWA, increased error-rates paralleled the latency-based CSI effect, suggesting stronger interference in this group. (v) Exploratory analyses suggest that lesions in a large area, including frontal, inferior parietal, pre- and post-central opercular cortices, are linked to a larger CSI effect. At a more lenient statistical threshold, lesions in occipital and supramarginal cortices were associated with increased overall naming latencies. These results offer an initial step toward identifying the neuronal underpinnings of semantic context effects in PWA. We conclude that web-based assessment is feasible in PWA and yields a stable CSI effect over repetitive testing. While not directly clinically applicable, the findings could serve as a foundation for exploring training-interventions targeting lexical activation, interference resolution, or word selection.Peer Reviewe

This work examines the significance of the concepts of pan-Islamism and jihad within German-speaking Islamic studies, German foreign policy during the German Kaiserreich (German Empire 1871 – 1918), and the work of Max von Oppenheim between 1896 and 1918. The primary sources analyzed include reports from the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, publications and correspondence of contemporary German-speaking Islamic scholars, the work and estate of Max von Oppenheim, as well as publications in contemporary newspapers. First, the sources from the various areas were examined within their respective fields and then compared within their subject areas. Oppenheim's notes were then compared with the reports of the Foreign Office and Islamic studies to determine the significance of the concepts of pan-Islamism and jihad within their respective contexts and their relevance of the concepts for anti-colonial movements and possible uprisings in the European colonies. Finally, Oppenheim's document Denkschrift betreffend die Revolutionierung der islamischen Gebiete unserer Feinde (Memorandum concerning the revolutionization of the Islamic territories of our enemies) was analyzed in the light of the findings obtained and an attempt was made to reconstruct the document. The study demonstrates that Max von Oppenheim - contrary to previous research - was not unconditionally convinced of the concept of pan-Islamism in the sense that the Caliph's call to jihad would be enough to trigger Muslim uprisings in the colonies of the Entete. It was shown that Oppenheim was an excellent expert on the Islamic world and its religious and social developments. This work expands the understanding of the role of pan-Islamism within its reception in the foreign policy and Islamic studies of the German Kaiserreich in the historical context as well as its actual significance for its influence on German propaganda and war strategy in the First World War

A deleuzo-guattarian inquiry into Project Prosperity

Jordan and Israel are in a naturally chronically water-scarce region. At the same time both countries’ renewable energy shares remain below their targets. Project Prosperity are gov-ernment-led Water-Energy Nexus (WEN) negotiations between Jordan, Israel and the UAE. The agreement proposal combines sales of desalinated water from the Israeli coast to Jordan with solar-generated electricity sales in the reverse direction to Israel. This study explores the dynamic macropolitical and micropolitical background of Project Prosperity to illuminate how they shape the potentials of this initiative within the context of a climate and security nexus. The results are grounded in three expert interviews conducted with academics and NGO staff from Israel. The qualitative analysis brings forward their assessments in an open-ended manner guided by Deleuze and Guattari's ideas on the politics of assemblages. The conditions for Project Prosperity’s formation had been prepared by the regional NGO EcoPeace. The idea had also gained traction against the backdrop of the Abraham Accords. The final enabler for Project Prosperity was the Bennett-Lapid government in Israel. Although the WEN inherited from its origins at EcoPeace a sense of being an environmental peacebuilding initiative, the results make clear that Jordan-Israeli relations are highly susceptible to movements in the Israeli-Palestinian peace and conflict dynamics. As such resource cooperation and other collaborative arrangements between Israel and Jordan always come under pressure when geo-political tensions rise, ceasing negotiations for Project Prosperity in this case. However since the geopolitical situation is not static but dynamic and not always foreseeable, recent examples show that (temporary) singular points for progress in water and energy relations can emerge and be taken advantage of

Eine dialogische Analyse von Gerda von Mickwitz’ Messling und Henrik Ibsens Gengangere

    No full text
The research context of this Master’s thesis is the modern breakthrough in Nordic literature, particularly the 1880s. The thesis asks how sickness and gender present themselves in the family narratives of Gerda von Mickwitz’ short novel Messling and Henrik Ibsens play Gengangere by way of a dialogical character analysis. The analysis also considers how other categories like sexuality, identity, age and status come into play in the characters dynamics as well as how these dynamics become apparent in the literary space of both texts. Methodologically, the analysis is based on a close reading of the literary texts and organizes the characters along their gendered roles in the family system. It treats the texts and their characters with reference to their contemporary context and underpins the findings with theoretical concepts (e.g. heterotopia, sexonomy) when necessary. Core points of the character analysis are the relationships between parents and children as well as those between husbands and wives. A separate chapter deals with social motherhood. The results include the identification of two connected character types: the addicted and/or syphilitic family man and his supporter, the bourgeoise family woman. In regard to the texts’ literary space, the analysis reveals a variability of the characters’ mobility over the borderline between urban centre and rural periphery. The thematic proximity of Gengangere and Messling regarding family narratives supports the proposition of other researchers in the field that Gerda von Mickwitz as well as her work should be read and analyzed in the context of a broad Nordic modern breakthrough and not only in their Finnish context. The thesis is written in German

“Press, press, press, press, press” Gender and Afro-Latina identity in Cardi B’s music videos

    No full text
The intersection of sexuality and racial identity is of special importance to the music videos of Cardi B. This paper will analyze the videos and music of “Press” and “Be Careful” as two separate works that each emphasize different aspects of this intersection. While “Press” depicts Cardi B taking on an aggressive persona that contains both masculine and feminine qualities, the video also thematizes media and the press in order to point out the artificiality of its own binaries, gendered as well as racial ones. Ultimately, “Press” shows Cardi B making strategic use of various media clichés while avoiding being subsumed by any one of them. “Be Careful,” on the other hand, portrays Cardi B as both bride and widow in a strongly heterosexual setting that emphasizes binary gender. In this work Cardi B is an example of a Latina “Sad Girl” who decides in favor of passivity and verbalizes her emotions.

Business Aspirations Among Smallholders in Rural Zambia: Drivers and Effects on Agricultural Marketing Strategies

    No full text
Socio‐psychological factors, including aspirations, play a significant role in economic decisions and the sustainable development of low‐income economies. However, the interplay between business aspirations and business strategies among smallholder farmers in Africa is complex, with little known about how they develop, what motivates them, and how these aspirations affect business decisions. To address this knowledge gap, this study examines how small‐scale farmers in rural Zambia develop crop‐specific business aspirations and how these aspirations influence their agricultural marketing strategies, such as marketing channels and coordination mechanisms. Our descriptive analysis shows farmers aspire to increase maize and soybeans' income, price, value‐addition, and bargaining power within 2 years. There is, however, significant heterogeneity in the sample, as over half of the farmers reported lower aspirations for the maize business and some aspects of the soybean business. The instrumented multinomial probit analysis reveals that farmers with higher human capital and positive socio‐cognitive psychology, such as locus of control, have higher business aspirations (i.e., ambition) and aspirations gap (i.e., ambition level). Evidence also shows that farmers' business aspirations influence their agricultural marketing decisions, with ambitious farmers preferring to transact with large‐scale buyers rather than small‐scale traders and retailers, using relational contracts. The study concludes that farmers' business aspirations, particularly their business aspiration gap, strongly influence agricultural marketing strategies, but their effects vary with crops and levels of business decisions.Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100011099Peer Reviewe

    Bias and evidential meaning

    No full text
This paper brings together two threads of research on the pragmatics of questions: biased questions, and evidential questions. We suggest (following, Eckardt and Beltrama 2019 Frana and Rawlins 2019, Frana and Menéndez-Benito 2019) that these two categories have considerably more overlap than might be expected. Certain kinds of biased questions can and should be analyzed in terms of epistemic markers that have many core properties of evidentials: providing an information source for a prejacent proposition as not-at-issue content, and participating in interrogative flip of the perspective in questions. In some languages, such as Italian, this interacts with more traditional evidentials in complicated ways, leading to a more developed typology of possible readings of evidential-like questions

The Mechanically Destabilizing Effect of Increased Heel Height in Women Is Not Enhanced by Dual-Task Interference

    No full text
Postural balance deteriorates as heel height increases, but the dual-task interference effect has not been investigated. This observational cross-sectional study investigated the influence of two concurrent cognitive tasks on balance performance while wearing shoes with different heel heights. We hypothesized that the concurrent cognitive demands’ effect on balance deterioration would be more pronounced in shoes with increased heel height. Twenty-one women (21–54 years) were assessed for quiet stance balance performance while wearing shoes with low-, medium-and high-heel height. Cognitive interference on balance performance was investigated by a dual-task condition using a short memory (COGN_A) and verbal fluency (COGN_B) task. Balance performance was quantified by measuring center of pressure (CoP) path length and sway range, while errors made and scores in COGN_A and COGN_B assessed cognitive performance. Postural balance decreased as heel height increased with greater CoP path length and anteroposterior sway for the medium- and high-heeled shoes ( p < 0.001). Cognitive load did not affect balance performance ( p = 0.234–0.494), nor was there an interaction between cognitive load and balance with increasing heel height ( p = 0.281–0.375). The results suggest that cognitive load does not limit postural balance with increasing heel height, and that balance is more affected by the increased mechanical demands of heel height. This research received no external funding.Peer Reviewe

Staying hooked: effective science engagement and communication in recreational fisheries

    No full text
This abstract summarizes the results of two expert consultations conducted to gather insights into effective communication and engagement strategies in recreational fisheries. Effective science communication fosters knowledge, understanding, and trust in both science and management decisions. Public involvement and stakeholder engagement are essential for effective management. Simplifying complex research findings and using diverse communication tools enhance awareness and understanding. Strong communication strategies are necessary to implement sustainable recreational fisheries management frameworks. Funding for communication efforts is often insufficient but remains crucial for success. Participatory workshops and data-sharing arrangements enhance collaboration and involvement. Multi-stakeholder consortiums and tailored communication strategies strengthen stakeholder engagement and promote adaptive governance. Interdisciplinary outreach and strategic social media use play vital roles in raising environmental awareness.Peer Reviewe
