    Normative Acceptance of Power Abuse

    No full text
While extensive research has shown how power corrupts those who wield it, less is known about its effects on the powerless. Victims of power abuse may either become dissatisfied with such norm violations by those in power or normalize such behavior, corrupting their own normative standards. In a laboratory experiment, we create communities where a single individual holds the power to punish others. We find that there is general agreement that it is socially inappropriate for those in power both to undercontribute and to enforce higher contributions from others. Yet we find that the powerless who are randomly exposed to this behavior believe it to be less socially inappropriate than those who are spared from it. These findings shed light on how power abuse can perpetuate itself and contribute to the persistence of corrupt institutions.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft 10.13039/501100001659Max‐Planck Society 10.13039/501100004189IMPRS‐UncertaintyPeer Reviewe

Fixation processes of N₂ and CO₂ for the synthesis of basic chemical compounds exhibit contrasting industrial relevance: while CO₂ is mostly regarded as a waste product and its utilization as a C₁ building block remains scarcely established, the reduction of N₂ to NH₃ in the Haber–Bosch process is globally implemented but still dependent on fossil resources. For sustainable processes, selective catalysts are required that can activate N₂ and CO₂ under mild conditions – which, however, presupposes a deep understanding of their activation. This work therefore investigates the activation of both molecules by metal complexes. The focus lies on CO₂ activation at β-diketiminato nickel complexes. Building on previous studies on the synthesis of nickel(II) carbonite complexes, their reactivity toward Lewis-acidic binding partners was systematically investigated. The goal was to model the enzymatic state Cred₂–CO₂ of [Ni,Fe]-CODH. Through three subprojects, heterobimetallic [Ni,M] carbonite complexes (M = Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Fe, Co, Zn) were synthesised. The [Ni,Fe] derivative proved to be a structural and functional model of the enzymatic intermediate and, for the first time, enabled detailed reactivity studies. It was found that transition metals lower the reduction potential of the [Ni–CO₂] unit but increase its tendency toward C–O bond cleavage – a possible rationale for the use of Fe(II) in the natural enzyme. In another subproject, the formation of oxalate was investigated, in which a homobimetallic [Ni,Ni] carbonite was identified as an intermediate. Upon contact with CO₂, this species can form new C–C bonds. The second part of this work deals with N₂ activation at manganese complexes. While β-diketiminato Mn(I) dimers do not bind N₂, newly developed, sterically demanding xanthene-based diamido ligands enable the formation of monomeric Mn(I) centers capable of N₂ activation. In the absence of N₂, these species also undergo oxidative addition to aromatic C–H bonds

Promiscuity in Molecular Mimics of the Cysteine Dioxygenase: Effects of Selenium in the Substrate and Cobalt as the Central Metal Ion

    No full text
Cysteine dioxygenase (CDO) catalyzes the conversion of cysteine with dioxygen to yield cysteine sulfinic acid, which lies at the branching point of cysteine catabolism. Despite many years of research there are still many questions related to its functioning. Thus, CDO is inactive with selenocysteine (Sec) or when the central iron ion is replaced by cobalt. In this context, we report here biomimetic CDO models with bound selenocysteamine substrate ligands, namely [TpMesFe(Se‐CH2‐CH2‐NH2)] and [TpMes*Fe(Se‐CH2‐CH2‐NH2)] (with TpMes = hydrotris(3‐mesitylpyrazol‐1‐yl)borate, TpMes* = hydrobis((3‐mesitylpyrazol‐1‐yl)(5‐mesitylpyrazol‐1‐yl)borate) and in addition a cobalt‐analogue [TpMesCo(Se‐CH2‐CH2‐NH2)]. Upon treatment of the Fe/Se homologues with O2 – as in case of the parent cysteamine‐bound complexes – the dioxygenation of the chalcogen atoms was observed. This suggests that the lack in reactivity of CDO‐Sec toward O2 does not originate in the electronic situation but in the surrounding protein matrix. Subsequent DFT calculations indeed showed lower initial barriers for selenocysteamine than for cysteamine in support of the experimental work. The complex [TpMesCo(Se‐CH2‐CH2‐NH2)], where Fe is formally replaced by Co, also reacts with dioxygen – more slowly but selectively – to give [TpMesCo(O2Se‐CH2‐CH2‐NH2)]. Hence, this is an experimental observation of a dioxygenation with O2 mediated by a cobalt center in a molecular compound, which is so far without precedence.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft 10.13039/501100001659Bioinspired Oxidation Catalysis with Iron ComplexesPeer Reviewe

Die Darstellung von Raum bei Achilleus Tatius und Heliodor - eine raumnarratologische Analyse

    No full text
This book is a narratological study of two ancient Greek novels and their configuration of space: Achilles Tatius’ Leucippe and Kleitophon and Heliodorus’ Aithiopika. Space is in both novels the organizing principle of the narrative: the protagonists fall in love with each other, leave home and travel, they suffer separation from each other, but are finally reunited to travel back home and marry. The importance of space is also reflected in the variety of detail and techniques space is represented with. Whereas some spaces are only indicated by stray references, others are elaborately described. The spaces these novels represent are not static configurations, but dynamic and experienced. They provide information in the spatial experience of the characters and engage with other elements of the narrative. My analysis not only considers space represented in descriptions, but also narrated space, in which space is not described but constructed alongside of characters acting and experiencing space. This approach not only increases the number of text samples to be studied, but associates space closely with the agents of the story and other key element of the novels. So far, space in the novels has predominantly been studied for its function or meaning, a comprehensive analysis of the formal varieties of the techniques of spatial representation and how these results contribute to an interpretation is still lacking. My book sets out to fill this gap by offering a series of close readings of spatial representations in order to shed new light on how and which form of spatial experience these novels convey and how this ties up with other aspects of the novels

A Structural and Mechanistic Study into Cluster C and its Protein Matrix of CODH-II from Carboxydothermus hydrogenoformans

Carbon monoxide dehydrogenases (CODHs) are key enzymes in microbial CO metabolism. Ni,Fe-CODHs catalyze the reversible interconversion of CO₂ and CO at the unique [NiFe₄(OH)(μ₃-S)₄] cluster C. The genome of Carboxydothermus hydrogenoformans encodes four putative CODHs, with CODH-IICh studied here. These enzymes are attractive models for CO₂ reduction, operating with almost no overpotential. We used high-resolution X-ray crystallography (to 1.01 Å) as the central tool to explore the structural basis of catalysis, inhibition, and mechanism in CODH-IICh. Structure-guided mutagenesis of non-coordinating residues near cluster C, combined with kinetic analysis, revealed their role in tuning catalytic activity and stabilizing the cluster architecture. Crystallographic snapshots also captured the progressive inactivation of CODH-IICh by O₂. We resolved early-stage structures with Ni-bound anions in a reversibly inhibited state, and later-stage structures showing Ni loss, Fe rearrangement, and disassembly of cluster C. To dissect the catalytic mechanism, we obtained crystallographic structures of CO₂- and CO-bound cluster C across different redox states. Combined with IR and EPR spectroscopy, these structures enabled us to track oxidation state changes at Ni and the coordination dynamics of ligands. Correlating spectroscopic signatures with atomic-resolution structures allowed us to define discrete electronic states of cluster C and propose a revised mechanism for CO₂/CO interconversion. This integrated approach offers new insight into redox catalysis at complex metalloclusters

Optimization of Beamforming and Transmit Power Using DQN and Comparison With Traditional Techniques

    No full text
This work was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) funded by the Research Project titled 5GEnabled Real Time Communications for ‘‘Tactile Internet’’ (5G-Remote) under Project 457407152.As Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies continue to evolve, their integration into 5G and 6G networks has become critical for improving performance and efficiency. These technologies enhance wireless communication by leveraging deep neural networks and data-driven methods to optimize resource allocation, signal detection, and channel coding. They also address the growing need to reduce energy consumption in next-generation networks. Deep Q-Networks (DQN) play a key role in this transformation by enabling dynamic resource management, adaptive beamforming, and efficient network slicing. The use of DQN can improve spectrum utilization, power consumption, and beamforming in massive MIMO systems, supporting demands like eMBB and URLLC. In 6G, it is considered for optimizing resource allocation, dynamic beamforming, RIS control for Terahertz communication, and complex network slicing. This article focuses on maximizing channel capacity by deploying DQN to identify optimal beamforming angles and transmit power values for multiple transmitters and receivers. The model determines the best steering vectors and power levels to achieve maximum channel capacity while minimizing energy consumption and mutual interference. Its performance is compared to conventional optimization methods, demonstrating its effectiveness in enhancing the efficiency and reliability of 5G and 6G networks.Peer Reviewe
