Knowledge for socio-ecological transformation: Gender perspectives on climate and environmental crises

    No full text
Feminist and gender studies offer important perspectives for analyzing environmental and climate crises and advancing socio-ecological transformations. In this article, we outline four key pillars, building upon longstanding feminist debates and approaches: (1) Pluralizing knowledge calls for challenging hegemonic knowledge production and recognizing marginalized perspectives. (2) Transformative research methods emphasize participatory and practice-oriented approaches to foster innovative knowledge generation. (3) Expanding gender concepts highlights how nuanced gender analyses can address gaps in socio-ecological crisis research, drawing on examples from fields such as queer ecologies, critical masculinity studies, and the gender-climate-migration nexus. (4) Enabling engaged research advocates for a strong connection between theory and practice, alongside structural changes within academic systems to support transformative research. We argue that feminist approaches provide indispensable insights for holistic examinations and strategies to address environmental and climate crises. The article concludes by introducing the context and contributions of this special issue.Open access funding provided by Johannes Kepler University Linz.Johannes Kepler University LinzPeer Reviewe

Sailing together: challenges for an inclusive team of visually impaired and sighted athletes at Kiel Week

    No full text
The article processing charge was funded by the Open Access Publication Fund of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The BAT-Sailing project is a joint project of the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein and FC St. Pauli Segeln, which enables people with and without disabilities to pursue sailing together in a performance-oriented manner as part of training and regattas. The project originally started with the intention of realizing the joint sailing of sighted and blind athletes. This article presents the scientific monitoring that was carried out at the request of the BAT Sailing Team in order to scrutinize and optimize the practice of the BAT Sailing Team [The name is derived from the word “bat” and alludes the symbolic transfer: cannot see (well) but can fly (or sail)]. The evaluation was carried out according to the Patton approach of a utilization-focused evaluation, which places the needs and values of the users at the center of the evaluation. The evaluation took place over three consecutive years (2021, 2022, 2023) and included interviews with the athletes, coaches and organizers of the BAT Sailing Team. The results showed that communication between sighted and blind athletes plays a special role and that the athletes learn to understand and support each other. Within the process of the evaluation it was able to identify communication as a strength that has developed in the joint sailing of people with and without visual impairments and that benefits above all people without disabilities. The results of the evaluation show that the utilization-focused evaluation is an effective tool for improving the practice of an inclusive sailing team that wants to act in a performance-oriented manner but also wants to ensure the participation of all potentially interested parties, regardless of their dis/abilities. The results of the evaluation can also be transferred to other inclusive sports projects that face a similar challenge.Peer Reviewe

Helical Chirality in Covalent Organic Frameworks

    No full text
Organic molecules are three-dimensional (3D) structures that exhibit symmetric properties. Among these properties, chirality has drawn significant attention due to its role in imparting unique optoelectronic characteristics to asymmetric architectures. In this context, [n]helicenes — chiral organic molecules with a helical shape — stand out as ideal candidates for the development of advanced chiral organic materials due to their intrinsically twisted structure. This work explores the incorporation of helical chirality into the backbone of two-dimensional organic frameworks (2D COFs), from configurationally stable enantiopure and racemic [5]helicenes. The main objective of this study was to compare the physical properties between the chiral and racemic frameworks, and fundamentally investigate how the absolute configuration of the enantiopure and racemic building blocks influences the structural characteristics of the resulting layered solids. The resulting framework materials exhibited high porosity, and phenyl-extended [5]helicene building blocks allowed the formation of highly crystalline solids. In these highly ordered materials, notable differences were observed in their lattice packing, morphology, and structural properties between their homochiral and racemic counterparts. These findings contribute to the expansion of the Liebisch–Wallach rule in crystalline organic 2D materials. Severe changes, such as the incorporation of highly annulated nodes, and changing the COF topologies, led to more complex homochiral structures that did not follow such tendencies. This work reports the successful introduction of carbon-based helical chirality into the backbone of 2D COFs, extending the scope of the chiral properties of these all-organic framework materials. We expect a broad fundamental applicability of our findings to novel chiroptical characteristics and potential applications of crystalline 2D chiral organic solids and thin films

Making the Sea Knowable: Ocean Literacies From a Sea‐Centred Perspective

    No full text
In this article, I focus on the wave buoy and how it expands the concept of ocean literacy. The Directional Waverider buoy, manufactured by Datawell, is used worldwide to measure waves to produce knowledge about oceans in the context of rising sea levels and storm surges. My ethnographic fieldwork took place on the German North Sea coast, where these ocean developments affect the low‐lying coastline. Using buoys along the coast is one way of making the sea knowable through datafication and climate modelling. To understand how the buoy pushes the limits of the concept of ocean literacy and what this means for human–ocean relations, I focus on the knowledge production processes of scientists working with the buoy and its data, and how the established infrastructure territorialises the North Sea. I subsequently show how the wave buoy rides the waves and how this relates to my embodied knowledge of the sea, drawing on Ingersoll’s concept of “seascape epistemology.” I argue that these knowledge practices are based on a sea‐centred perspective, and that in order to remain stable, this infrastructure needs to be as supple as the sea. I conclude by suggesting that it is important to understand ocean literacy as a plural concept, as ocean literacies, as demonstrated by these plural knowledges.Peer Reviewe

Digitalization in the World of Work and Individuals in Their Second Half of Working Life in Germany

    No full text
As digitalization continues to transform the world of work, understanding its implications for older workers is crucial. This dissertation comprises three papers that delve into the ramifications of digitalization on older workers in Germany. Drawing from data of the German Ageing Survey enriched by digitalization data on the occupational level, this dissertation focusses on training behavior, subjective job quality, and self-perceptions of aging (SPA). In the first paper, the association between training behavior and the extent of digitalization in occupations is explored. Findings reveal positive associations between changes in the level of digitalization and training participation. Notably, gender differences in training participation are identified, with female employees working in occupations that experienced a strong digitalization boost over the last years potentially facing disadvantages compared to their male counterparts. The second paper shifts the focus to subjective job quality, examining how digitalization impacts various dimensions of job satisfaction and perceived occupational stress among older employees. Findings indicate that while digitalization generally seems to enhance job satisfaction, it can also lead to increased stress in certain aspects of work (tight schedules, negative environmental factors). The third paper investigates, how digitalization influences older workers' SPA. Latent change score models are employed to explore changes in SPA across domains such as physical and social losses, ongoing development, and self-knowledge. Remarkably, higher levels of digitalization are associated with positive shifts in SPA, particularly in the domains of ongoing development and self-knowledge. Overall, this dissertation contributes to a better understanding of how older workers fare in digitalizing occupations and informs policies and practices aimed at supporting older workers in an increasingly digitalized world of work

Interface Engineering via Self-Assembled Monolayers for TMDC-Based Field-Effect Transistors

    No full text
Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) present a promising route to extend semiconductor scaling beyond the 5-nm node. Their atomically flat, dangling-bond-free layers integrate well with silicon. CMOS logic requires p- and n-type transistors; ambipolar TMDCs—capable of conducting both holes and electrons—enable both device types on a single flake. However, complementary switching with low OFF-state currents requires carrier-type control in each device. The 2D nature of TMDCs allows interface-specific doping via environmental engineering. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs)—ordered molecular layers formed by organic surfactants—offer a powerful approach. Their molecular dipoles alter substrate surface potential and work function, modulating the optoelectronic properties of overlying TMDCs. This thesis explores SAM-based tuning of MoS₂ and WSe₂ for FETs. Substrates are patterned via microcontact printing with three SAMs: two with large opposing dipoles and one non-dipolar reference. These generate microscale surface potential variations, shifting TMDC Fermi levels—downward dipoles promote hole conduction; upward dipoles favor electron conduction. MoS₂ FETs show strong SAM-induced shifts in threshold voltage, mobility, and carrier density, but intrinsic n-type character—linked to sulfur vacancies—prevents p-type behavior. WSe₂, being nearly intrinsic, displays p-type traits on downward dipole SAMs. Yet, functional monolayer WSe₂ devices remain elusive. Despite improved gating and contacts, no operation is achieved. Material quality analysis shows no defects. Highly efficient gating is realized using lithium-ion-conducting glass ceramic (LiCGC), forming an electric double layer and enabling ambipolar WSe₂ FETs. Functionalizing LiCGC with SAMs weakens gating due to the SAM’s ~1 nm thickness. Despite challenges, this work demonstrates a robust route for microscale tuning of TMDCs toward post-silicon logic

Routes to Pt Derivatives of High‐Valent Sulfur Oxofluorides S(═O)2F, S(═O)F2, and S(═O)F3 by Fluorination and Oxygenation

    No full text
Metal derivatives of high‐valent sulfur fluorides and oxofluorides can provid e fluorinated building blocks for materials science and bioactive compounds, but so far, such building blocks are elusive. The paper describes routes to access remarkable metal derivatives of S(═O)2F, S(═O)F2, and S(═O)F3 by oxygenation or fluorination steps. The Pt(II) fluorido complex trans‐[Pt(F)(SOF)(PCy3)2] (2) reacts with the Davis reagent (3‐phenyl‐2‐(phenylsulfonyl)‐1,2‐oxaziridine) to yield the sulfuryl fluorido complex trans‐[Pt(F)(SO2F)(PCy3)2] (4). Notably, the electrophilic fluorinating agent NFSI (N‐fluorobenzenesulfonimide) reacts with 2 to form trans‐[Pt(F)(SOF2)(PCy3)2][NFSO2Ph] (5a). By nucleophilic fluorination with TMAF (Me4NF) it is possible to fluorinate the sulfur center once more to give the complex trans‐[Pt(F)(SOF3)(PCy3)2] (6) bearing an unprecedented SOF3 ligand. Above 283 K, complex 6 shows a decomposition of the SOF3 moiety to form trans‐[Pt(F)2(PCy3)2] (7) and SOF2. The described complexes could represent a previously unknown class of transfer reagents for high‐valent sulfur fluoride units.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft 10.13039/501100001659Peer Reviewe

A machine learning based regulatory risk index for cryptocurrencies

    No full text
Cryptocurrency markets are highly sensitive to regulatory changes, often experiencing sharp price fluctuations in response to new policies and government interventions. Despite this, existing market indices fail to adequately capture the risks associated with regulatory uncertainty. In this paper, we introduce the Cryptocurrency Regulatory Risk Index (CRRIX), a machine learning-based index designed to quantify the impact of regulatory developments on cryptocurrency markets. Our methodology employs Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to classify policy-related news articles from major cryptocurrency news platforms, providing an objective measure of regulatory risk. We find that the CRRIX exhibits strong synchronicity with VCRIX, a cryptocurrency volatility index, suggesting that regulatory uncertainty plays a significant role in driving market fluctuations. Our results indicate that regulatory risk is a leading factor in market volatility, with major policy shifts triggering significant market movements. The proposed regulatory risk index provides a novel approach to quantifying policy uncertainty in the cryptocurrency sector, offering valuable insights for market participants navigating this rapidly changing environment.Open Access funding enabled and organized by Projekt DEAL.Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (1034)Peer Reviewe

One Atom, One to Two Photons

This thesis describes the design and construction of an updated experimental apparatus aimed at deterministically coupling single trapped atoms to a fibre-integrated whispering-gallery-mode bottle microresonator. It incorporates a positionable optical dipole trap for single atoms as a key element. In a first experiment using this set-up, single trapped atoms are coherently driven by an external laser field, and their fluorescence light collected using a high numerical-aperture lens. A measurement of its photon statistics reveals strong photon antibunching - a distinctive feature of the light scattered by an isolated quantum emitter. Such photon anticorrelations are commonly associated with the fact that a single two-level emitter can only absorb and emit single photons. However, it can also be understood as an interference phenomenon between the two-photon components of the coherently and incoherently scattered fields, which perfectly cancel to preserve the single photon characteristics of the fluorescence light. To experimentally validate this picture, a narrow-band notch filter is introduced, that acts to suppress only the contribution of the coherently scattered field. As a consequence, the photon statistics of the filtered fluorescence are drastically modified. When maximal suppression is achieved, the remaining fluorescence light is predominantly comprised of the incoherently scattered component, and the measured photon statistics exhibit a strong time-symmetric bunching behaviour. This observation signifies the presence of simultaneously propagating pairs of photons that have been scattered by the atom, and further demonstrates that antibunching in resonance fluorescence relies on the delicate balance between the coherently and incoherently scattered two-photon components. These results offer fundamental insights into the interaction between light and matter at the quantum level, and validate a counterintuitive picture of interfering quantum amplitudes
