Mental Health Implications of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Impact on High-Risk Groups and Efficacy of a Psychological Intervention
The COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread psychological challenges due to prolonged exposure to chronic stressors such as disrupted routines, health concerns, social isolation, and economic instability. Applying the diathesis–stress model, this dissertation examines the effects of pandemic-related stressors on mental health in vulnerable populations and evaluates a stepped-care intervention to mitigate psychological distress. Study 1 analyzed 47 patients with clinically diagnosed anxiety disorders and found significant increases in unspecific anxiety, panic symptoms, and specific phobias, while social anxiety remained stable. Job insecurity, family stress, and healthcare employment were key risk factors, whereas meaningful occupation and divorced/separated status showed protective effects. Study 2 outlines the methodological foundation for a longitudinal investigation over up to 24 months, including repeated assessments of psychological distress, quality of life, and hair cortisol. The stepped-care prevention program comprised a 4-week automated CBT-based chatbot (“Aury”) for adults, adolescents, and families, followed by an optional 6-week psychologist-guided online group intervention after a 4-week waiting period. Study 3 examined 1,269 adults seeking low-threshold digital support during the pandemic. The predominantly young, female, and highly educated sample showed elevated symptom levels. Greater stress exposure and pre-existing mental disorders were linked to higher symptom severity, while adaptive emotion regulation buffered distress. Study 4 evaluated outcomes in 142 participants after “Aury” and 41 after group sessions, including a 6-month follow-up. Results revealed significant and lasting reductions in depression, anxiety, and somatic symptoms, with a clear dose–response effect. Overall, findings support the diathesis–stress model and highlight the efficacy of digital stepped-care approaches for addressing mental health needs in future crises
Linear Volumetric Photoactivation with Short Axial Dimension and Low out of Focus Excitation
The article processing charge was funded by the Open Access Publication Fund of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.Spatially confined photo-excitation with the lowest possible activation of the remaining volume is of central importance for high-resolution high-density optical data storage, fluorescence microscopy, 3D-lithography, and 3D-printing. Two-photon absorption (2PA) enables such applications yet leads to slow processing speed due to the underlying non-linear absorption process. Here, Split-Aperture Xolography (SAX), is introduced which uses stepwise excitation of dual-color responsive molecules to initiate a linear volumetric photo-reaction process that is up to several orders of magnitude more efficient than 2PA. The capabilities of SAX are investigated in a scenario study for focusing systems with high numerical aperture (NA) using a Python implementation of vectorial diffraction theory. The intersecting half-cones generated by the split illuminated entrance aperture of the objective reduce the axial focal spot size of the activation distribution by up to a factor of two compared to 2PA targeting the same electronic transition. A steep average decline of the activation probability with the fifth power away from focus is found for a wide range of directions. This is significantly better in comparison to 2PA and prevents that undesired out-of-focus excitation events sum-up with subsequent irradiations. This approach is expected to be advantageous for volumetric methods at the nanoscale.Peer Reviewe
Tailoring the Electron Density of Functional Groups for Controlled Charge Transfer in SWCNTs
Controlling the position of the Fermi level at the single‐particle level in bulk amount of carbon nanotubes is a key technological bottleneck against their use in building nanodevices for electronics, optics, sensing, bioimaging, and beyond. Here are deployed a novel set of molecules built up from the same building blocks (aniline and methoxy groups attached on a triazine anchor) that efficiently p‐ and n‐dope the nanotubes, depending upon the way they are assembled. Independent computational and experimental investigations consistently confirm the tunability‐by‐assembly concept of the charge transfer agents. The changes of the electronic density localized on the anchor groups and, upon attachment, the consistent variation of the position of the Fermi level in single‐walled carbon nanotubes are monitored. The induced shifts reach several hundreds of meV, ranging from p‐doping up to n‐doping. This is evidenced by changes in the electronic and vibrational behavior of the nanotubes, as observed by Raman, photoelectron, and photoluminescence spectroscopies.Freie Universität Berlin 10.13039/501100007537Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) ‐ CRC 1772 InitiativeEuropean Research Council 10.13039/501100000781Italian Ministry of University and Research: PRIN PNNR 2022 DrasticPegaso UniversityPeer Reviewe
Light‐Gated Amine Exchange in Diarylethene‐Crosslinked Microgels
The functionalization of microgels with photoswitchable moieties enables the construction of multi‐responsive systems, which are highly interesting for biological applications, for example, in drug delivery. Controlling the reversible uptake of functional molecules, however, remains a major challenge. To address this, we developed a novel aniline‐type diarylethene (DAE) crosslinker and prepared a series of corresponding poly( N ‐vinylcaprolactam)‐based microgels with varying degrees of DAE crosslinker. Upon UV light irradiation, the aniline (and thus enamine) motif of the DAE is converted to its imine form, thus allowing for reversible exchange with primary amines. Irradiating the DAE with blue light covalently locks the equilibrium and traps the amine in the microgels. The light‐controlled covalent binding of fluorinated, hydrophobic, and hydrophilic amine derivatives was proven by dynamic light scattering and 19 F NMR spectroscopy. Importantly, the impact of photoisomerization and amine binding on microgel properties was investigated and we were able to remotely control size as well as temperature and pH responsiveness by light. Overall, this study demonstrates optically gated uptake and release of functional amines in multi‐responsive microgels and highlights their potential biological applications.German Research Foundation (DFG)Collaborative Research Center SFB 985Functional Microgels and Microgel SystemsPeer Reviewe
Health and Performance Challenges in the Era of Human Enhancement: Insights from Sport Medicine Professionals
Background: In the pursuit of sporting success, some elite athletes prioritise peak performance over long-term health, frequently resulting in significant and enduring health consequences. The Enhanced Games (TEG) position themselves as a bold experiment in transhumanism, advocating for the use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs), including methods banned by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), to push the boundaries of human athletic potential. Objectives: The aim of this study is to explore the perspectives of sport physicians, sport scientists, physiotherapists and other allied healthcare professionals on treating and supporting “enhanced athletes”, with the view of informing future guidelines. Methods: Participants were invited via email and personal contacts within sport medicine communities to complete a brief anonymous survey via QuestionPro™. Descriptive statistics were performed using Excel™ and RStudio™. Results: A total of 323 healthcare professionals responded (82% were sport physicians), among whom 74% expressed a willingness to treat acute lesions and/or chronic diseases in “enhanced athletes”. In comparison, a considerable minority (30%) expressed support for assisting athletes in their use of PEDs and methods under medically supervised conditions, with high consistency across professional roles. A relatively high readiness was observed in sport physicians treating acute (77% versus 58%; p < 0.01) and chronic (75% versus 63%; p = 0.11) diseases for “enhanced athletes”. As far as WADA rules and/or national anti-doping laws apply, this support presupposes compliance with the code and the respective national laws to protect physicians from serious professional, legal and personal consequences. Conclusion: The preliminary findings align with the broader goal of fostering a sport culture that values both peak performance and the short- and long-term health of all participants. These results emphasise the necessity of implementing professional guidelines and comprehensive support systems designed to safeguard the long-term well-being of all athletes and underscore the urgent need for further research into the impact of TEG on sport and its community.Open access funding provided by Hong Kong Baptist University LibraryHong Kong Baptist UniversityPeer Reviewe
This master thesis aims to answer the questions of how current feminist interventions are characterized, what goals and intentions are pursued by the activists, and in what ways the expanded digital space is used as a novel form of articulation for social as well as political protests. For this purpose, an overview of both feminist theories or concepts of the public sphere will be provided, and past protest movements and orientations of feminism will be addressed in order to determine its impact on contemporaneous actions. Three contemporary feminist interventions are used to illustrate the research subject. These works are analyzed in terms of their use of particular stylistic devices and tools. The thesis will conclude by clarifying whether current protest-specific developments represent a new wave of the fight for equality. In doing so, the division of feminism into waves will be critically questioned, with the background that the focus on certain dominant narratives neglects a number of those affected individuals
High-Entropy Phosphate Synthesis: Advancements through Automation and Sequential Learning Optimization
Transition metal phosphates (TMPs) are extensively explored for electrochemical and catalytical applications due to their structural versatility and chemical stability. Within this material class, novel high-entropy metal phosphates (HEMPs)─containing multiple transition metals combined into a single-phase structure─are particularly promising, as their compositional complexity can significantly enhance functional properties. However, the discovery of suitable HEMP compositions is hindered by the vast compositional design space and complex or very specific synthesis conditions. Here, we present a data-driven strategy combining automated wet-chemical synthesis with a Sequential Learning App for Materials Discovery (SLAMD) framework (Random Forest regression model) to efficiently explore and optimize HEMP compositions. Using a limited set of initial experiments, we identified multimetal compositions in a single-phase crystalline solid. The model successfully predicted a novel Co0.3Ni0.3Fe0.2Cd0.1Mn0.1 phosphate octahydrate phase, validated experimentally, demonstrating the effectiveness of the machine learning approach. This work highlights the potential of integrating automated synthesis platforms with data-driven algorithms to accelerate the discovery of high-entropy materials, offering an efficient design pathway to advanced functional materials.Peer Reviewe
Hochschild (Co)-homology of D-modules on rigid analytic spaces
Let K be a discrete valuation field of characteristic zero. The goal of this thesis is developing a formalism of Hochschild cohomology and homology for D-modules on rigid analytic spaces over K, and study the deformation theory attached to it. We also lay the foundations for developing an equivariant version of these results in the future, by considering actions of finite groups on smooth separated rigid analytic spaces. In particular, we develop p-adic analogs of Cherednik algebras, which are generalizations of the rational degenerations of double affine Hecke algebras. These algebras have a rich representation theory, and have been a very active field of research in the past twenty years. In particular, they have applications in the representation theory of Weyl groups (more generally, reflection groups) and their associated Iwahori-Hecke algebras, the study of symplectic quotient singularities, and to Calogero-Moser spaces
A functional Principal Component Analysis for compositional data
The objective of this thesis is to develop Functional Compositional PCA, a dimension reduction method tailored for compositional data derived from low-count samples. This method extends the Functional Principal Component Analysis (FPCA) framework developed by Steyer and Greven (2023) for sparsely sampled density functions to the finite-dimensional setting of compositional data. Functional Compositional PCA adopts a similar approach by introducing a latent variable model and employing the Monte Carlo Expectation-Maximization (MCEM) algorithm for parameter estimation. The method allows for reducing dimension. The reconstructed compositional vectors achieved from the PCA can also be used as improved preprocessing of compositional data derived from a small library size compared to existing methods. The thesis is structured as follows: The literature review will cover the current PCA for compositional data, including some techniques to deal with zeros. Then the functional principal component analysis FPCA will be mentioned, but mostly focus on its usage for density data. Next, the methodology parts will focus on the Functional Compositional PCA method. Afterwards, empirical evaluation uses sparse data simulated from German electoral data in 2025 to assess the performance of the proposed method in comparison with Vanilla PCA techniques. Finally, the thesis ends with a brief summarization of all the findings and limitations
