Abstract
The English Community Zone (ECZ) is a place where Toyo students, both domestic and 
international, get together to enjoy conversation and activities and are encouraged to use English 
as a common language to communicate with one another. The ECZ has a long and successful 
history starting in 2006 at the Itakura Campus when it was run by the then Faculty of Regional 
Development Studies. Although the satellite campuses have fewer international students, they 
have been trying to make similar facilities available for students. The ECZ has great potential to 
play a key role in developing communication skills and broader perspectives that align with the 
philosophical, global, and educational vision of Toyo University. This paper provides an overview 
of the background of the ECZ and discusses current and future development initiatives in order to 
make positive contributions to students’ lives and university education as a whole. It also suggests 
some developments necessary for the ECZ so that it can play a more expanded role in the future 
with the aim of contributing to the university’s global education while creating a unified ECZ 
within all the campuses of Toyo University.

1. Introduction
The English Community Zone (ECZ) at the Akabanedai Campus was created in academic year 
2021 when the Faculty of Human Life Design was moved from the Asaka Campus to the 
Akabanedai Campus. Serving the same functions as the ECZ at the Asaka Campus, the purpose of 
the ECZ was to facilitate students’ social interactions and conversations in English as part of the 
university-wide initiative to globalize learning environments at Toyo University (Toyo University, 
2020). In 2023, the Faculty of Design for Welfare Society was established with the purpose of 
educating each individual student to “become a professional who contributes to realizing and

developing a society where all people are treated with dignity and can live in good health” 
(ToyoWebStyle, 2024). The faculty has aimed to engage in critical social issues in order to 
contribute to society and build better social infrastructure, and this has been reflected throughout 
the curriculum and extracurricular activities at Toyo University. Within the overall educational 
policy of Toyo University, the ECZ was established to make a firm commitment to providing 
students with opportunities to pursue their studies in a global environment by weaving together 
various aspects of the learning experience. 
 In 2021 and 2022, the use of the ECZ was restricted because the faculty focused on making 
the utmost effort to prevent COVID-19 infections. However, students made various attempts to 
communicate with international students who were on either short-term or long-term programs at 
Toyo University. This paper reports on how the ECZ at the Akabanedai Campus has been 
developing based on and collaborating with the ECZ at the Hakusan Campus, while describing the 
origins, challenges, and achievements of the ECZ at the Hakusan Campus. It concludes by stating 
that the collaborative and engaging activities unique to the ECZ are important achievements that 
serve the fundamental purpose of the overall university education at Toyo University. 
2. The ECZ at the Hakusan Campus
2.1 Beginning
The ECZ, in its original form, was created in 2006 at the Itakura Campus by the Faculty of 
Regional Development Studies (RDS), which envisioned it as a space where Toyo students could 
use English. The rationale was that students were learning English, but they lacked a place where 
they could actively practice it. The ECZ was established to address this growing need. In the early 
days, the ECZ was open two hours a day and housed in an unused room at the Itakura Campus. 
Students gathered there to talk, play games and practice English. From the beginning, the goal 
was for the ECZ to be run by students with limited administrative/faculty oversight. Professors 
from RDS were instrumental in finding the space and procuring enough of a budget to pay one 
student two hours a day to assist visitors. In addition to walk-in traffic, the space was occasionally 
used by related student clubs and circles. In those days, the ECZ was visited almost exclusively by 
degree seeking students as the study abroad student population was significantly smaller. This 
continued when RDS moved to the Hakusan Ⅱ Campus in 2008, bringing the ECZ with it.
2.2 Recent Activities 
In 2012, the ECZ was moved to the Hakusan Campus, and the International Affairs Office (IAO) 
took over the administration of the space. With an expanded budget and larger space, the ECZ 
opened its doors to all students of the Hakusan Campus faculties. Six student staff members, which 
in later years increased 10 to 11, were hired to run the ECZ and its hours were expanded to 11:30 
to 18:00 Monday through Friday. During the spring semester in 2020, the ECZ closed because of

the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in the fall semester of the same year, the ECZ was rebranded 
as English Community Zoom, which was held online between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. from Monday 
through Friday and remained online throughout the semester. 
 Since moving back to campus after the pandemic, the ECZ has typically employed 10 to 11 
student staff members per semester. Initially, all staff members were Japanese, but later both 
Japanese and international students were hired to facilitate the activities. With the increasing 
number of international students at the university, most of the current student staff are 
international students. Throughout the history of the ECZ, the primary focus has remained the 
same, which is to provide a space for Toyo students to use English for authentic communication 
and enjoy themselves. This is largely facilitated by keeping the space unstructured. Students are 
able to visit the ECZ and do whatever they want, such as chatting with friends, listening to music, 
and playing games. During much of the time the ECZ is open, there are no formal activities. 
However, in order to promote the space, there are some regular structured events:
 ・　 Let’s Talk About: the ECZ staff plan discussions and activities focused on a particular 
topic such as study abroad, movies, and travel.
 ・　 Evening events: once a month the ECZ hosts a special evening event, such as a 
Halloween party, Christmas party, and end of semester party. 
 ・　 International Community Zone: once a week, the ECZ hosts an event or activity with a 
particular international focus. Popular examples include Japanese Community Zone and 
Korean Community Zone. Members of a particular community often help organize and 
run these events, such as when several French students helped put together the 
French Community Zone.
 ・　 SDGs at the ECZ: recipients of the SDGs Ambassadors Scholarship organize interactive 
workshops that focus on various Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United 
Nations.
 ・　 Workshops and lectures by visiting professors and groups: the ECZ hosts professors 
and groups visiting from partner universities who give lectures or lead activities on 
international topics of interest to Toyo students.
For most of the events, space is limited and students must register in advance. Encouraging 
students to register as well as promoting each event requires continuous effort, but the ECZ has 
been gradually but increasingly recognized by students and teachers at Toyo University. 
3. The ECZ at the Akabanedai Campus
3.1 Beginning
When the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)

started a funding project to globalize Japanese universities, Toyo university was successfully 
chosen as part of the Top Global University Project in 2014 with the initiative titled Toyo Global 
Diamonds (MEXT, 2014). One of the targets in this proposal was to develop an inclusive 
environment at all the campuses to promote global communication. The Faculty of Human Life 
Design, which has since been reorganized into the Faculty of Design for Welfare Society and the 
Faculty of Health and Sports Sciences, was officially requested to globalize itself in various aspects 
ranging from its curriculum to administrative matters. The ECZ at the Asaka Campus was started 
as a pilot project with the support of the IAO at the Hakusan main campus. 
 There were two major achievements from the administrative perspective: the 
establishment of the English Community Initiative (ECI) and the hiring of international students. A 
group of students was organized to help run the ECZ regularly. This group grew into the ECI, a 
student club activity at the Asaka Campus. As the faculty did not have students from overseas, 
some English-speaking international student staff were recruited by the IAO and hired by the 
Asaka Office. As a collaborative activity, a small number of students managed regular weekly 
activities and some occasional seasonal events.
3.2 Recent Activities 
In April 2021, the Faculty of Human Life Design was relocated to the Akabanedai Campus, and 
two years later, the faculty was re-organized into two faculties: the Faculty of Design for Welfare 
Society and the Faculty of Health and Sports Sciences. The Akabanedai Campus has four buildings 
or hubs for three separate faculties and one dormitory: 
 Hub 1 – INIAD: Faculty of Information Networking for Innovation and Design
 Hub 2 – WELLB: Faculty of Design for Welfare Society
 Hub 3 – HELSPO: Faculty of Health and Sports Sciences
 Hub 4 – AI House: Toyo University International Residence
The Akabanedai ECZ was placed on the third floor of the WELLB Hub-2 building with other 
learning facilities that promote proactive learning and activities for students in all the faculties. In 
order to empower coexistence and prosperity with all the hubs at the campus and possibly with 
local communities, the ECI is playing a key role in promoting and maintaining the regular activities 
at the ECZ together with some international students mainly from the AI House hired as student 
staff. Located at the heart of the campus, the ECZ is expected to become a place where students 
engage in independent activities for creating and contributing to multicultural, global communities. 
 In academic years 2021 and 2022, the ECI had to consider alternative ways to foster 
international exchange due to the increased restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. 
After the relocation of the faculty and before the opening of the AI House, the ECI members

managed to find and work with the international students in INIAD to organize a lunchtime online 
conversation circle. A simple weekly topic was set, and the participating students chatted online 
during their lunch break. This activity created the opportunity to not only practice and use 
English, but also share information on university life in general. As students during that time had 
experienced difficulty in making friends and getting to know each other, the ECZ functioned as an 
online hub creating a unique community for university students.
 However, while weekly online exchanges had their good points, students longed for in-
person communication, and they sought new ways to make the ECZ more useful to a wider range 
of students. In the academic year 2023, based on the official application, the ECI members started 
to organize and conduct regular and seasonal events as well as activities at the Toyo University 
Festival. The ECI worked on their own to publicize events using social networking services and 
word of mouth, and they were able to welcome some participants from the AI House. With the 
request from the ECI, the Akabanedai Office gave permission to hire international students as staff 
members. Recruited by the IAO, several international students were hired to work with the ECI 
to make the ECZ more communicative, engaging, and friendly.
 Weekly activities in the ECZ generally include communication using board and card 
games. Staff members plan monthly events to attract a wider community by organizing different 
activities and having some communication time with tea. As there are international students from 
various countries and regions, culture-focused themes can be organized depending on seasons and 
calendars. Depending on participating students, appropriate topics are chosen and events are 
prepared accordingly. Based on the proposals and plans, the Akabanedai Office financially supports 
events and provides permission to promote them using posters and internal online systems. 
4. Future Development at the ECZs
More communicative activities at the ECZ are expected to continue to make a valuable 
contribution to the overall Akabanedai Campus experience as a satellite campus as well as at the 
Hakusan Campus to function as a hub of the ECZs. There are some particular areas to be 
addressed in order to further develop the ECZ. These include the following points:
 ・　 More activities need to be created in order to invite more students to come and spend 
time at the ECZ;
 ・　 The space needs to be made friendlier and more inviting so that students feel 
comfortable visiting the ECZ and staying; 
 ・　 Times and dates need to be carefully coordinated with the overall curriculum in order 
to optimize outreach to potential participants;
 ・　 Promotions need to be revitalized using internal systems and social networking 
services;

 ・　 A greater effort needs to be made to attract new visitors to the ECZ;
 ・　 Collaboration needs to be encouraged between domestic and international students 
with balanced leadership.
One of the ongoing challenges is finding international students to take the initiative in planning 
and conducting feasible activities at the Akabanedai Campus. Partnered with the IAO and possibly 
all the ECZs at other Toyo campuses, the Akabanedai ECZ can evolve into an effective learning 
space for students with multicultural backgrounds to realize their potential.
5. Conclusion and Suggestions
Founded in 1887, Toyo University strives to offer students extensive learning opportunities to 
cultivate academic skills to succeed in an age of diversity. The university has been attracting 
international students from around the world, and there is an increasing number of overseas 
students studying at the Akabanedai Campus. Providing students with a highly distinctive 
curriculum in each faculty, the university also tries to ensure that students can pursue unique 
experiences in order to have wider and more global perspectives.
 While English is considered to be an important common language, there are still areas to 
be improved in terms of linguistic and cultural diversity. Discrepancies in English proficiency 
require more creative and collaborative efforts to maintain activities and facilitate conversations. 
With an increasing importance placed on diversity, equity, and inclusion, interacting with people 
from various cultures has become a more salient and valuable learning experience in order to 
improve communicative language proficiency. By addressing common or complex topics, students 
are expected to reflect on their own needs and roles in a society. With the hope of cultivating 
communication skills and wider perspectives on cultural diversity, the ECZ can attempt to make a 
positive contribution to overall university education.

日本語要旨
　東洋大学のイングリッシュ・コミュニティ・ゾーン（ECZ）は、東洋大学全学生を対象とした多文
化交流スペースであり、国内学生と国外学生が、英語でのコミュニケーションを楽しむためのスペー
スとして設立された。白山キャンパスにおけるECZの活動を軸に、その他のキャンパスにおいても導
入がすすみ、大学全体の国際化に貢献する活動の一環として、様々な取り組みが行われている。ECZ
は、学生の英語コミュニケーション力強化だけではなく、多文化共生社会を目指す取り組みとしても、
参加学生のグローバルな視点の育成に寄与できる活動として、東洋大学の教育活動において重要な役
割を果たすことが期待されている。本稿では、白山キャンパスおよび赤羽台キャンパスおけるECZの
活動について概観し、これまでの活動に基づき、今後の展開や課題について検討する。

康スポーツ科学部（以下「学部」という。）の教育と研究を促進し、教員を中心としたそれらの成
果発表の場として、関連の論文、研究ノート、書評、研究展望、学部教育に関する諸活動報告等を
掲載発表する。

第 2条　学部で刊行する紀要は健康スポーツ科学部紀要編集委員会（以下「委員会」という。）内規
第 ４条による。
（投稿資格）
第 3条　紀要に投稿できる者は原則として学部の専任教員とする。ただし、以下の場合には、委員会
の判断で受け入れることができる。
（ １）委員会において特別に依頼する場合
（ 2）学部専任教員が代表である共同執筆原稿の場合
（ 3）学部非常勤講師から希望があった場合

１．使用言語
　使用言語は、特に制限しない。ただし、印刷等にあたり特別の技術を有する言語、査読委員の
選出に困難を来す言語、その他の事情を有する言語については、事前に編集委員に相談すること。
また母語以外を使用する場合には当該言語のネイティブ・スピーカーによる校閲を受けたうえで
提出することとする。
2．執筆者
　投稿資格者は、東洋大学健康スポーツ科学部紀要編集内規第 3条に定める者とし、共著者がい
る場合は氏名の右肩に＊印を付けて示すこととする。
3．要旨及びキーワード等
　原稿の本文が日本語の場合には、欧文（英・独・仏のいずれか）の表題、著者名、要旨及びキー
ワードをつけること。欧文要旨は１00～１50ワード程度とする。
　原稿の本文が英語又はその他の言語の場合には、各言語の要旨、キーワードのほかに、日本語
の表題、著者名、要旨及びキーワードをつけること。日本語要旨は600～800字程度とする。
　欧文要旨は、当該言語のネイティブ・スピーカーによる校閲を受けることとする。
４．本文及び脚注・注
　本文は原則として横書きとし、英語の場合はダブルスペースで記述する。原稿用紙の大きさは
Ａ ４サイズを標準とする。長さは日本語の場合はＡ ４用紙30枚を超えない程度とする（いずれの
場合も図表を含むものとする）。他の言語の場合もこれらに準ずる。以上の内容に依りがたい時
は編集委員と協議して決めることとする。
　脚注は、本文中の該当箇所の右肩に一連番号を打ち、注そのものは当該ページの下部に記入す
る。各章毎、あるいは本文末に注をまとめる場合も、注番号は当該箇所の右肩に一連番号で示す
こととする。
　提出時に総字数を示すこととする。
5．参考文献
　参考文献は、原則として以下の要領で記載する。

6．図表
①　図は著者の作成したものをそのまま印刷するので、黒インクで浄書（トレース）すること（ワー
プロ印刷でも可）。トレース等が困難な場合にはトレース料は自己負担とする。
②　図は、なるべく白紙に黒インクで大きめに書くこと。又、各図は一枚毎に別々の用紙に書く
こと。
③　図中の文字数字等は写植されるので、正確に書くこと。大文字と小文字、イタリック体、ゴ

1．はじめに
本稿の目的は、東洋大学社会福祉学研究科実施
のリカレント教育に関するアンケートの結果を報
告することである。
急速な社会の変化によって大学で学んだ内容が
結果的に短期間で陳腐化することが指摘されてい
る。社会福祉領域においても、例えば要支援者を
取り巻く社会環境が以前とは大きく変化したり、
施設職員など社会福祉の働き手に大きな変化が生
じている。このような社会の急激な変化に対応す
るため、近年社会人の学び直しの必要性が指摘さ
れている。本研究科においても、一般にリカレン
ト教育と呼ばれる社会人の学び直しに対応する体
制を整えることは喫緊の課題である。このため本
研究科では東洋大学社会福祉学会及び東洋大学校
友会の協力を得て、卒業生に対してリカレント教
育に関するニーズ等の調査を行った。本稿ではそ
の結果を報告する。
なお本稿の内容は東洋大学社会福祉学会第18回
大会（2024年7月13日開催、於：東洋大学赤羽台キャ
ンパス）で報告した内容に、参考情報を多少付け
加えたものである。
2．リカレント教育の捉え方
管見の限りリカレント教育の定義は必ずしも統
一されていない。東洋大学では「生涯学習〔教育〕
の中で提案されてきた用語です。欧米では、1960
年代以降の生涯学習の主要課題は青年や成人に対
する職業教育であったことから、職業生活を維持
していく上で、学校での学び足し（学び直し）が
必要であるとされ､ 職場と学校教育の往還のイメー
ジとして提唱されたのがリカレント教育です」（東
洋大学 更新年不明）。と捉えている。一方政府では、
例えば文部科学省の中央教育審議会生涯学習分科
会では「リカレント教育」について「元来はいつ
でも学び直しができるシステムという広い意味を
持つものであるが、本議論の整理では、キャリア
チェンジを伴わずに現在の職務を遂行する上で求
められる能力・スキルを追加的に身に付けること
（アップスキリング）や、現在の職の延長線上では
身に付けることが困難な時代のニーズに即した能
力・スキルを身に付けること（リスキリング）の
双方を含むとともに、職業とは直接的には結びつ
かない技術や教養等に関する学び直しも含む広義
の意味で使用する」と捉えている（中央教育審議
会生涯学習分科会 2022 : 9）。加えて厚生労働省で
は「学校教育からいったん離れたあとも、それぞ
れのタイミングで学び直し、仕事で求められる能
力を磨き続けていくことがますます重要になって
います。このための社会人の学びをリカレント教
育と呼んでおり…」（厚生労働省 更新年不明）と
している。東洋大学や厚生労働省は「リカレント」
を比較的包括的に職務上で必要な能力の獲得のた
めに行う学習といった意味合いで捉えているが、
東洋大学で言及されている「職場と学校教育の往
還」という点は特徴的と言える。また生涯学習分
科会ではその構成要素として「アップスキリング」
と「リスキリング」を掲げている点が特徴的である。
いくつかの「リカレント教育」に関する捉え方
を概観したが、本稿では、学校において行われる、
職務に関する卒後教育、と捉えることとする。

3．調査の方法
1）アンケートの目的
リカレント教育に関するニーズを測ることを目
的とする。
2）アンケートの方法・対象者
本アンケートは、東洋大学社会福祉学会と東洋
大学校友会（協力団体）の協力を得て実施した。
実施主体である東洋大学大学院社会福祉学研究科
から両協力団体に対して各団体の会員に調査票（書
面・ウェブ上の回答フォーム）の配布を依頼する
形で本アンケートを実施した。協力団体ごとの調
査実施方法、回答人数は以下の通りである（表1）。
東洋大学社会福祉学会の会員に対しては、郵送
またはウェブの回答フォームからアンケートへの
回答を願った。その結果26名から回答を得た。ま
た東洋大学校友会会員に対してはウェブの回答
フォームからの回答を依頼し、111名から回答を得
た（なお、東洋大学社会福祉学会会員に対して郵
送による回答も可能としたのは、同学会が配布し
ているニュースレターに調査協力依頼及び返信用
はがきを同封できたためである）。いずれも調査期
間を2023年6月末～ 8月とした。
回答者の年齢層（協力団体別）は表2の通りであ
る。
主な聴取項目は次の通りである。なおアンケー
ト票の設計・集計にあたり株式会社学校コミュニ
ケーションネットワークスからの協力を得た。
・ 基本情報（年齢、性別、医療・福祉関係に関す
る業務の通算経験年数、過去5年間で従事・活動
された組織形態及び職種）
・ リカレント教育受講に関するニーズ
 　学び続けることの重要さ（☆～☆☆☆☆☆）
 　☆☆☆以上とした理由
 　 今後東洋大学で学ぶとした場合、関心ある
学習テーマ

4．調査結果
1）学び続けることの重要さ（☆～☆☆☆☆☆）
本問は「学び続けることの重要さ」について尋
ねた。なお、学習（の継続）は時間的・金銭的な
制約が生じることが一般的であり、これらの影響
を排除するため「学ぶ環境にあるかどうかは別と
して」という前提を付した上で尋ねた。その結果
は表3の通りである（☆が多いほど重要であること
を指す）。
この問いでは、「☆」「☆☆」とする回答はほと

んど見られず、最も重要を表す「☆☆☆☆☆」が
学会・校友会ともほとんどを占めており、継続的
な学習の重要性は高い割合で認識されていると考
えられる。
2）☆☆☆以上とした理由（複数回答）
次に、学び続けることの必要性を「☆☆☆」（☆
3つ以上）とした人に対し、その理由を尋ねた。回
答は表4の通りである。
学会・校友会とも「自身が進化できる」「仕事に
誇りを持てる」「豊かな人生になる」といった、自
身の内心に関する回答が多くを占めた。次いで「周
囲の期待に応えられる」や「キャリアアップ」など、
職務上の能力に関わると思われるものが続き、目
に見える形の効果と言える「収入増」は、最も少
数の回答であった。
3）今後東洋大学で学ぶとした場合、関心ある
学習テーマ（複数回答）
次に、本学で学ぶ場合における関心ある学習テー
マを尋ねた（表5）。
学会と校友会、いずれかで10%超の項目として
「交渉・コミュニケーションスキル」「プロジェク
トマネジメントスキル」「経営・人事・労務管理」「社
会資源開発」「制度・政策」が挙げられる。特に「交渉・
コミュニケーションスキル」「プロジェクトマネジ
メントスキル」「経営・人事・労務管理」は、職場
においてその必要性が認識されたものと思われる。
一方「社会資源開発」「制度・政策」は、近年、社
会福祉領域におけるこれらの動きが激しいことが
一因と考えられる。

4）学習にあたり重要視する項目（複数回答）
次いで、学習にあたり重要視する項目（複数回答）
を尋ねた（表6）。
特に多かった選択肢として「時間帯・曜日」「受
講方法（対面ほか）」を挙げられる。働きながらの
受講を考えた際、これら如何によって受講の可否
が決まってくるとも言え、受講する立場として特
に重要な点と思われる。
5）学習する曜日・時間帯（複数回答）
次に、学習する曜日・時間帯について、具体的に
尋ねた（表7）。
平日夕刻以降、また土曜日・日曜日の比較的長
い時間帯の希望が多い結果となった。この結果か
ら、平日夕刻以降は1時限程度の短い時間の学習、
これに加えて土曜日・日曜日に比較的長い時間の
学習（2時限、あるいはそれ以上）が具体的な展開
方法として考えられる。
6）学習方法
新型コロナウイルスの流行に伴い、大学におい
ても一気にオンライン授業（表中のOL。決められ
た時刻に、インターネット上のビデオ会議システ
ムを用いて実施する形態の授業）やオンデマンド
授業（表中のOD。教員が予め学習コンテンツを専
用ウェブサイトに掲出しておき、受講生が都合の
良い時間帯に視聴などをする学習形態）が普及し
た。現在でもこれらは活用されているが、ここで
も学習方法の希望を尋ねた（表8）。
特に仕事を持つ人々にとっては、通学時間を省
くことができるオンライン授業やオンデマンド授
業は大きな魅力を持つものと考えられる。一方で
教員や他の受講生との交流ができる点で対面授業
にも大きなメリットがある。表8の通り、対面とオ
ンライン・オンデマンドの併用を希望する回答が
約半数以上の結果となった。

最後に、希望する学習時間を尋ねた（表9）。
「修得できる迄」と「40-60H程度」（半年程度）
が大半を占める結果となった。一方「30H」にも
一定のニーズがあると考えられる。
5．まとめ
以上、本研究科で行ったアンケート調査の結果
を報告した（中間報告）。合計で137名の方から回
答を得た。「学び続けることの重要さ」からリカレ
ント教育に対する一定のニーズはあると考えられ、
その背景には自身の人間的な向上が多くを占めて
いたが、収入増といった明瞭な形で学習の効果が
みられる点も含まれていた。また「関心ある学習
テーマ」から、特に「交渉・コミュニケーション
スキル」「プロジェクトマネジメントスキル」「経営・
人事・労務管理」に対する関心が高いと判断できる。
いずれも職種を問わず、多くの職場で必要とされ
る技能と思われる。
実際の学習環境に関し、特に重視する点として
「時間帯・曜日」「受講方法」が挙げられる。「曜日・
時間帯」から平日の夕刻～夜間帯や土日が、また「学
習方法」としては「対面とオンライン或いはオン
デマンド」のニーズが高いと判断できる。加えて「学
習期間」について、「修得できる迄」といった意欲
的な回答に加え、中程度の時間（40-60H）が多い
結果となった。
社会の変化が早い時代において、その変化に追
いつくための学習に対するニーズが高いことは自
然な流れと思われる。しかし社会の変化に追いつ
くためだけがリカレント教育の役割ではない。質
問「☆☆☆以上とした理由」や「今後東洋大学で
学ぶとした場合、関心ある学習テーマ」の回答に
含まれている通り、職務に即応可能な事柄のみな
らず、「豊かな人生になる」ための学習や物事の本
質を見極めようとする「福祉原論・哲学」の学び
を求める声も存在する。よって、職務の向上、そ
して人間としての向上を期待できるためのリカレ
ント教育の実施が必要である。
