HOW EFL STUDENTS COPE WITH ILL-FORMED SOURCE-LANGUAGE SENTENCES IN ENGLISH-TO-INDONESIAN SIGHT INTERPRETING
This research investigates how English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students cope with ill-formed source-language sentences in English-to-Indonesian sight interpreting. In line with the objective, students’ interpretations of sentences with linguistic errors were collected as the data via video-based observation and qualitatively analyzed using content analysis. The findings reveal that most students were aware of the occurrence of typographical errors in the assigned source documents and able to sight interpret those parts as targeted, especially when dealing with mix-up letters and middle-letter omission. However, many of them seemed to have difficulties in identifying the occurrence of grammatical errors, such as subject-verb disagreement and improper use of a certain part of speech and punctuation errors, such as the presence of unnecessary punctuations, which then leading to inaccurate interpretations. It is assumed that the primary cause of these interpretation problems is attributed to students’ limited understanding of the source texts, highlighting the critical need for enhanced fast-reading comprehension skills among students
ENCHANCING DESCRIPTIVE MATERIAL LEARNING AT PUBLIC JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL THROUGH DIFFEREFTIATED LEARNING AND WIZER.ME E-WORKSHEET
: The aim of this research was to address the challenges posed by changes in regulations for admitting new learners at Public JHS 54 Palembang, where test scores or reports were no longer the primary criteria for enrollment. This research employed a modified model based on the work of Gall, Gall & Borg, and Tessmer. The initial phase involved analyzing the diverse needs of seventh-grade students, encompassing their intentions, profiles, and readiness for learning. The curriculum changes had led to an increased reliance on textbooks, resulting in a need for supplementary worksheets. The researcher used the Canva application to design content within the Wizer.me platform. The validation process included expert validation of the prototype, focusing on material substance. Validation results indicated a high level of approval, with a percentage of 97.3% and a mean score of 4.86. The language aspect received an 86% approval rate, equivalent to an average score of 4.3. Material presentation in the learning materials received a 90% approval rate, with an average score of 4.5, affirming the validity of the developed worksheet.Following expert validation, a small group evaluation was conducted to assess the practicality and reliability of the developed worksheet for descriptive text materials employing differentiated learning. The expert validation results demonstrated that the developed worksheet, created using the Wizer.me application, was highly valid. Additionally, the small group evaluation confirmed that the worksheet was practical and reliable for use in an educational setting. In conclusion, this research successfully addressed the challenges posed by changes in admission regulations at Public JHS 54 Palembang by introducing differentiated learning materials. The use of electronic worksheets, implemented through the Wizer.me platform, proved to be an effective solution for catering to the diverse student profiles. The expert validation and small group evaluation affirmed the validity, practicality, and reliability of the developed worksheet, making it a valuable addition to the educational resources available for seventh-grade students.
NARRATIVE RECONSTRUCTION OF TRAUMATIC MEMORY IN THE NOVEL OF REDEMPTION AT HACKSAW RIDGE
This research discusses the traumatic memory of Desmond Doss and analyzes Herndon’s narrative reconstruction of Desmond’s traumatic memory in his novel. This research uses the post-memory theory by Hirsch, through Freytag’s pyramid approach. The qualitative method and literary memory are use in this research. Data were acquired from the documentary interview, and the paragraphs that existed on every page of the novel. The researchers collected the date through four steps: exploration, reduction, abstraction, and read intensively. This research reveals that Desmond Doss experienced seven traumatic memories; he was frightened of the gun, intimidated, humiliated, lost his friend, Japanese Army strategies, and the aftermath. To make it entertaining to read, Herndon caught Desmond’s traumatic memory and reconstructed the narratives into his novel. To fulfill Herndon's and the reader’s satisfaction, he exaggerates and lessens some of the actual events. The purpose of narrative reconstruction in this novel was to modify what the author could not do in the past and fix it in the novel through his imaginative investment, along with highlighting the heroic story of Desmond Doss
A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF PHONOLOGICAL ELEMENTS IN LAMPUNG LANGUAGE: DIALECT A PEMINGGIR AND DIALECT O ABUNG
This study aims to investigate the differences in phonological elements between two dialects of the Lampung language: Dialect A Peminggir and Dialect O Abung. The research focuses on Lempasing Village, Padang Cermin District, Pesawaran Regency for Dialect A Peminggir, and Bumi Agung Marga Village, East Abung District, North Lampung Regency for Dialect O Abung. The objectives of this study are to describe: (1) the differences in vowel phonemes between Dialect A Peminggir and Dialect O Abung, (2) the differences in consonant phonemes between Dialect A Peminggir and Dialect O Abung, (3) the characteristics of diphthongs and vowel lines in Dialect A Peminggir and Dialect O Abung, (4) the differences in clusters and consonants between Dialect A Peminggir and Dialect O Abung, and (5) the variations in syllables between Dialect A Peminggir and Dialect O Abung. The study adopts a descriptive analytical method, and data collection involves the use of recording devices, tapes, and other stationery. The research utilizes various techniques, including listening or tapping techniques as basic methods, and advanced techniques such as free listening techniques, fishing techniques, recording techniques, questionnaires, and recording techniques. The results of the study demonstrate both differences and similarities in the phonological elements of Dialect A Peminggir and Dialect O Abung in the Lampung language
WILLINGNESS TO SPEAK: WHAT FACTORS INFLUENCE EFL LEARNERS?
The online learning mode has dramatically altered the manner of the way how communication is conducted in learning at higher education or schools for the past two years. It has led to a considerable change in how learning is carried out, transferring it from an offline to an online setting that permits long distance connection and communication. However, this has an effect on students’ engagement in class as many of them exhibit passive or unresponsive behavior in participating the online learning sessions. This qualitative study aims to explore the influencing factors affect students' willingness to participate in zoom sessions during online classes at English Department, Universitas Jambi. The data was gathered through the online classroom observations and interviews with the six EFL learners, and the data was then analyzed based on the theoretical built-themes of Willingness to Communicate (WTC). The finding reveals that 1) The demotivating factors influence EFL learners’ willingness to speak in zoom class were derived by the situational factor such as difficult task types and models, the unfamiliar topic of class discussion, the lecturers’ personal characteristics, the inconvenienced time or schedule of the class meeting and a trouble Internet connection. While 2) The depressing factors influenced by the psychological component, were comprised by the lack of self-confidence, low level of English language proficiency, L2 learning anxiety and students’ individual personality
CRITICAL LISTENING IN HIGHER EDUCATION: INSIGHTS FROM INDONESIAN EFL LEARNERS
This research aims to examine the practice of critical listening in higher education. This investigation involves fourth-semester students in the English Education Department of an Indonesian public state institution. This research utilized a qualitative case study. This study's data were collected using a triangulation method incorporating classroom observation, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. In this research, the data were analyzed thematically. According to the data analysis, students benefited from implementing critical listening in the classroom because the critical listening practice focused on essential listening competencies, helped them develop critical thinking, and promoted critical listening in the classroom. Students believed that critical listening aids in developing their language skills and allows them to exercise critical thinking skills that have yet to be covered in class. The findings of this study can provide educators with a starting point for implementing critical listening with EFL students. In other words, the findings may cast light on implementing critical listening, including the general benefits and challenges students encounter.
APPLYING GENDER DIFFERENCES IN PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS TO ENHANCE STUDENTS’ READING ABILITY
Phonological awareness is the first stage in enhancing kids' reading skills. Phonological awareness provides the foundation for youngsters to associate written letters with their voices, which will help them understand the reading process. Primary school reading abilities provide the groundwork for subsequent reading success. The research technique that utilized to conduct study on phonological awareness and reading ability of male and female primary school pupils is a research method that combines quantitative and qualitative data, commonly known as the Mixed-Method. To obtain quantitative data, this method employs one experimental group, whereas to obtain qualitative data, classroom observation, questionnaires, and interviews conducted on experimental. The subjects of this study were low-grade male and female pupils at primary schools in Cirebon. A basic random sampling procedure is used to determine the samples. There were four types of data gathering procedures used in this study: phonological awareness, observation, questionnaires, and interviews. This study leads to several findings. First, the findings are broadly consistent with previous research in the field of PA in primary children. The study discovered a consistent developmental trajectory in the majority of the PA tasks in favor of primary children. In addition, females outperformed males in some PA subtests. In order to eliminate obstacles to advancing their reading abilities, elementary students must be trained on PA exercises
STUDENTS’ ENGAGEMENT IN VIRTUAL CREATIVE WRITING: DEVELOPING A CREATIVE WRITING STYLE
Writing is not a stand-alone mental activity; it is inextricably linked to other forms of creative design, such as drawing and music composition. Writing is a highly sought-after skill in today's digital world. Creative writing is defined as the fluent exchange of concepts in an original manner through the construction of logical connections between them in written form based on the individual's schema. This article discusses a study that examined factors affecting student engagement as a lens through which to examine students' perceptions of their creative writing class participation. These interactions emphasize the complexities of student engagement and promote the accuracy of the instruments and metrics used to study it. Cognitive engagement is concerned with a student's internal investment in the learning process, which includes inner psychological characteristics or nonvisible characteristics that encourage effort in acquiring, comprehending, and mastering the knowledge or skills required for academic work. As a result, English lessons were held for 12 students from Flores' private junior high school. They completed a questionnaire that included quantitative and qualitative questions. Descriptive statistics are used to examine qualitative data conceptually and statistically. The participants' experiences reflected various aspects of the students' participation. According to the findings, creative writing activities can help students learn about behavior, emotion, and cognition in a poetry class. However, in a poetry class, emotional involvement prevailed and was followed by behavioral engagement. Nonetheless, pupils maintained a low level of cognitive engagement
UNVEILING THE POETIC LANGUAGE OF STUDENT DISCOURSE ON INSTAGRAM
This study aims to investigate the poetic function of language used by students on Instagram pertaining to the discourse topics expressed by the students. These researchers adopted a qualitative approach as the research design. This study was conducted by collecting data towards students from schools in Denpasar, Bali, about students' Instagram captions as its document data for analysis. Based on observation, documentation, and interviews with all participants, it can be concluded that Roman Jakobson's poetics function of language, which was demonstrated in the students' Instagram captions, is a viable initiative to discover students’ topics of interest; the students tend to choose topics such as life, love (blossom, broken heart, or loneliness), nature (nature itself or related to humans), personality, wordplay, precious moment,self-confidence, and friendship. These captions are the result of the students' ideology, which include the ideology of wisdom, humor, confession, and hope.
VARIETY OF ENGLISH LEARNING MEDIA TECHNOLOGY: VOICES FROM NOVICE LEARNERS
The existence of technological media in the learning process has its own roles and challenges in this era of disruption. The purpose of this study is the extent to which the use of technological media supports learning English in junior high schools and the equivalent. The research method used is the survey method. The research was conducted in 36 public and private junior high schools and Madrasah Tsanawiah in Kuningan Regency by collecting data through a Google form questionnaire. The results obtained turned out that of the 59 teachers who filled out the Google form, as many as 86.4% of English teachers used laptops, handphones with infocus, frequently used applications, Whatsapp 28.8%, Power Point 22%, Youtube 32.2%, and E-learning 16.9%. However, 88.1% stated that teachers had not maximized the use of technological media in learning English. On the other hand, from 200 students grade seven (19%), grade eight (40%) and grade nine (41%), there are 54.5% did not use technology media, 37% used laptop, infocus, and Handphone, and 8.5% used laboratorium
