PORTRAYING ACADEMIC WRITING APPTITUDE AND THE PLAGIARISM ISSUES AMONG EFL STUDENTS
This article is the research result of teaching-learning Academic Writing to English Students Department, UNG in the fourth semester of 2020. This research objective is to enrich applying theories accessed from online books and international Journals by avoiding plagiarism in students’ writing essay as theoretical bases of their research. Besides, they would be able to communicate in the target language of writing skill as a maximum standard. There are three categories of the rubric to analyze essay in this qualitative method; a) choosing ideas in introductory sentences before taking quotations, b) accuracy diction selection, and c) linkage ideas in well sentences formulation after choosing the quotation/paraphrase. The result, from 25 students’ writing, there are 15 students who got value of A category (60%), 5 students with A- category (20%), 3 students got B+ category (12%), and 2 students got C (8%)
E-LEARNING AS A PLATFORM IN STUDYING ENGLISH AMONG EFL LEARNERS: BENEFITS AND BARRIERS
This paper presents research findings on the benefits and barriers of E-learning in the study of English among EFL learners. The topic of this research was students from Department of English Education, Universitas Kuningan, and it was carried out using a qualitative design. An observation checklist and an interview were used to collect data. The study's findings revealed that using E-learning to study English has several benefits, including the flexibility of time and place, easy access to a wealth of information, the ability to facilitate relationships between learners through the use of discussion forums, and the ability to learn at one's own pace. And E-learning also has a numerous barriers in studying English such as, the lack of internet access/WIFI, a software barrier, learners are not enough excited to study English using E-learning, socially disconnected, weak levels of student engagement and students are illiterate and uneducated in the use of modern technologies. Therefore, it could be concluded that the use of E-learning in studying English at Department of English Education, Universitas Kuningan is not effective.
COOPERATIVE LEARNING FOR ENHANCED READING COMPREHENSION: A STUDY WITH FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS
This research aimed to determine the effectiveness of teaching reading comprehension using a cooperative learning model for first-year students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Bone. The study employed a quasi-experimental design, involving two groups: an experimental group (30 students) and a control group (30 students). Both groups underwent pre-test assessments, material presentations, and post-test evaluations. The data, collected through multiple-choice items, were analyzed using mean scores and the t-test formula. The research revealed that reading comprehension improved significantly in the experimental group (mean score 83.11) compared to the control group (mean score 61.56). The t-test also indicated a significant difference between the two groups, favoring the cooperative learning model. In conclusion, the use of the cooperative learning model effectively enhances students' reading comprehension.
EXPLORING GENDERED LANGUAGE USE: MULTILINGUAL FEMALE ADOLESCENTS IN BANDUNG, INDONESIA
This study focuses on the language characteristics of multilingual female teenagers in Bandung, a city with a diverse ethnic population. The research is based on a small sample of 16-18 year old students from a private high school and uses a descriptive-analytic method to analyze recorded conversations as primary data and interviews as secondary data. The study categorizes and analyzes the language variations and characteristics of the teens' speech, using theories from Lakoff (2017) and Holmes (2022). The results suggest that some, but not all, of the language features proposed by Lakoff are present in the teens' speech. Additionally, the study identifies six language functions used, including lexical hedges, tagging questions, empty adjectives, reinforcers, emphasis stress, and rising intonation. Due to the participants' multilingualism, the conversations often involve a mix of Indonesian, local (Sundanese), and English codes
IMPROVING ENGLISH STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILLS THROUGH AN ACTION LEARNING STRATEGY
For students of English education, speaking skills are of paramount importance. However, in the context of English students at Universitas Bengkulu, many students seemed to still struggle with speaking skills. Therefore, to cope with this problem, this classroom action research was conducted with the aim of improving the speaking skills of students who took English conversation course by applying action learning strategy (ALS) since this strategy was scientifically promising. Two phases of the class action design were employed in this research project. The data were garnered using observations, interviews, and English-speaking test. It was evident from the first phase of observation that almost all students recommended the ALS. The data from the interview revealed that a significant proportion of students had profited from this approach, and there were few students who spoke in front of the class. The first phase's precise decision how an average score of 74 was attained by the students. At the second phase, the observation and interview data showed that nearly all students actively participated during discussions and had good improvements of English-speaking skills. The result revealed that the implementation of ALS in the conversation course in semester 1 improves S1 students’ speaking skills
A NEED ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH HYBRID LEARNING USING OPEN BROADCASTER SOFTWARE (OBS) THROUGH PROJECT-BASED LEARNING (PJBL) MODEL TO PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
This study aimed to determine the need for English hybrid learning using the Open Broadcaster Studio (OBS) through Project Based Learning (PjBL) Model. This research applied research and development (R&D) approach. The development model used was ASSURE model. Preliminary study conducted on 37 respondents consisting of 12 teachers and 25 students of primary school at RSI Indonesia School. The results of the study showed that the need for English hybrid learning is very necessary to overcome problems found during the learning process. Teachers need teaching model that can support the learning process and provide solutions if students experience obstacles during learning. The results of the research at the needs analysis showed that there were obstacles in the implementation of online learning that need to be solved. A learning model that can solve problems occurred in online learning, and also has a systematic learning stages to make students participate actively in learning process and to produce a project that can improve students' creative thinking is crucially needed. This study provides an overview and direction to teachers to continue developing effective hybrid learning and become a resource for further research in hybrid learning model development
EXPLORING THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION AND APPRAISAL OF THE 2013 ENGLISH CURRICULUM IN A STATE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL: A QUALITATIVE INVESTIGATION
The constant enhancement of Indonesia's educational curriculum is aimed at improving the overall quality of education. This research specifically investigates the application of the 2013 English Curriculum at a state yunior high school in Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia, utilizing a qualitative evaluative approach. The study, conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Palembang, involved two English teachers and eighth-grade students. The findings revealed that the English teachers adhered to standard content and government syllabi when developing lesson plans. Teaching methods and assessments also aligned with government policies. Additionally, factors such as teacher quality, resource accessibility, and community involvement were identified as potential influencers on curriculum effectiveness. Although the curriculum has evolved, evaluating the 2013 curriculum can provide valuable insights for future improvements in Indonesia's educational curriculum.
NON LINGUISTIC ASPECT CAUSED STUDENTS’ FOREIGN LANGUAGE ANXIETY IN SPEAKING ENGLISH
Foreign language anxiety is a type of anxiety that is experienced by individuals when learning, speaking, or interacting in a foreign language. Some scholars have been interested to investigate the foreign language anxietyin the classroom and identified the cause of students’ foreign language anxiety, either in international context or Indonesia context. Most of the factors related to the linguistic aspect, such as students lack vocabulary, students lack of pronunciation, and do not understand of teacher’s talk. However, the research about factors of foreign language anxiety is caused by non-linguistic aspect was still undergrown. This research came to stipulate the gap of knowledge. This research used qualitative method and study case design. It took 20 students of English Education Department FITK IAIN Sultan Amai Gorontalo who have Upper-Intermediate proficiency level. The instruments of research used foreign language anxiety scale to identify factors of students’ foreign language anxiety and in-depth interview to know the students’ reason of being anxiety in foreign language classroom. It used triangulation method in analysing data, namely reducing data, displaying data, and drawing conclusion. The results showing that there were 3 non-linguistic aspects in causing students’ foreign language anxiety. First, they felt worried if they had to speak in front of the class and answered the lecturer's questions voluntarily. Second, they felt worried if they do not understand what the lecturer is talking about. Third, they felt worried if they did not prepare before the lesson started. Fourth, students felt worried if they would get a bad score. This result implied to the teacher’s technique in asking the students to speak in front of the classmate. Therefore, the research suggested to apply small group discussion in teaching and learning speaking skill in foreign language classroom
INVESTIGATING THE COLLOCATION OF THE WORDS 'MOM' AND 'DAD' IN ALEC GREVEN'S NOVELS: A CORPUS LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF SEMANTIC PREFERENCES AND PROSODY
This research delves into the collocation and semantic analysis of the words "Mom" and "Dad" in two novels, "How to Talk to Mom?" and "How to Talk to Dad?", authored by a teenage male writer, Alec Greven. The primary objective is to investigate the frequency of occurrence of these parental terms and explore their semantic preferences and prosody within the context of dictions used in the novels. The study uses a mixed-method design, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative approaches to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the research topic. Using corpus linguistic methods, the study examines the frequency of the words "Mom" and "Dad" in each novel, revealing that "Mom" occurs more frequently than "Dad." Through concordance hits, the collocational patterns of the parental terms are analyzed, shedding light on the contexts in which they are commonly used. The collocation analysis demonstrates that "Dad" is frequently associated with family, friendship, and engaging activities, while "Mom" is linked to family, household chores, and maternal preferences. Furthermore, the research explores the semantic prosody of "Mom" and "Dad" revealing that "Dad" is portrayed more positively compared to "Mom."
THE DEVELOPMENT OF INQUIRY METHOD BASED EXPLANATORY TEXT WITH PISA FRAMEWORK FOR JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Research and development of a module for reading explanatory texts based on inquiry methods and PISA standardized questions has been carried out in class VIII SMP N 52 Palembang. This study aimed to produce reading modules that suit the needs of teachers and students. The research method used was development research with the steps of research on the development of the Jolly and Bolitho and Dick, Carey & Carey models which include identification of needs, exploration of material needs, contextual realization, production of materials, expert validation, one to one evaluation, small group and field tests. Data was collected through questionnaires, interviews, validation sheets, and tests. The results showed that the feasibility aspect of content and presentation obtained a percentage of 84% in the very good category, linguistic feasibility obtained a percentage of 90% and was categorized as very good, graphics obtained a percentage of 76% in the good category, validation questions received a percentage of 85% in the very good category. Practicality in the one-to-one evaluation stage and the small group gets a percentage of 80% in the practical category. The effectiveness measured in the field test is 0.49 and is in the medium category. Thus, the product in the form of a module for reading explanatory texts based on inquiry methods and PISA standardized questions can be used in learning explanatory texts
